There was a super long Reddit post a few years ago about how Quizno's franchising model was basically a predatory MLM/pyramid-like scam. It's been deleted, but the gist of it was they'd fine their franchisees for all of these minor violations and make them buy expensive equipment from the company that basically bled individual stores dry and made it impossible to turn a profit.

That's actually surprising to me because Subway is/has been so expansion-focused and small-footprint that I would have thought they'd be pretty low maintenance. I'll have to check that out.
also, legitimately had no idea that Tropical Smoothie Cafe was a chain until about maybe five years ago. We had one open up in my hometown when I was in high school and it was seen as so cool because they had Wiis.
