Tip on eating cheap vendor food: Keep an eye on the venders in centeroo after midnight-ish. Alot of them will give away free food when they are ready to close down. We ate free late-night every night last year.

i'd definitely like to try and bring stuff to make a hearty breakfast. the first year my friends and i went, we didn't know what the ice situation would be, so we didn't bring anything that needed to stay cold. this year i'm going to plan much better!

If you're going to try to do rice and beans, I regularly bring Zatarain's on camping trips. SO wonderfully flavorful. Their black beans and rice or red beans and rice are wonderful. I take the packets out of the box, write cooking instructions on the bag for later with a marker and pack. Takes up next to no room, filling and nicely spiced.
I'll be VIP, too, and the one thing we didn't think about was lunch on Thursday (before the catering tent is up and running at 6:30 p.m. and after setting up the camp site). We had no energy to walk to Centeroo in the hot sun, just wanted a shower and a cool lunch. This year, bringing salami, cheese and crackers.
Breakfast for us was coffee made in French press to go cups, bagels and marmalade or jam (transferred from the glass containers to plastic). It was so hot in the morning, that was perfect for us. Wouldn't give up the coffee! But the breakfast was nice and cool.
Also, if you're in VIP, watch the snack table at the catering tent. We got some awesome to-go food for wandering Centeroo and watching concerts. Everything from standard chips, peanut butter and crackers to some super high energy snacks in nifty flavors like guacamole and barbeque.
Smokers, my boyfriend uses a method of putting out and storing butts that is sort of perfect if it's going to be as horribly dry as it was last year. Take an empty water bottle, fill half way with some of the non-drinking water. Just drop your lit butt in and cap the bottle. One bottle might last the whole weekend and no risk of fire!
That's where we got it. Fri night, prolly around 1-ish, the guy at one of the gyro places was calling people over to take whatever they wanted. After that we kept an eye out Sat and Sun nights, and easily found others giving stuff away.
It's a little known fact, but eggs don't have to be refrigerated. They last longer and stay fresher in the frig, but they will last about a week out in the open. I've taken them on many a canoe trips that we did all dry no coolers. They are cheap and good for you/fill you up.
Look up the precautions on the internet I don't want anyone getting sick. But the jist of it is you have to inspect each egg you take for cracks so there is no chance of bacteria. Other than that you need to get one of those plastic egg holders so they don't get cracked and you're good to go.
I do not suggest Power Bars. Mine got really soft and melty last year and they are so hard to swallow. I think of my 5 person group we only ate 3 of the box we bought.

Freezing a case of water is a great idea. Did it last year. Already got a case in the freezer- keeps the water icy cold 'til sunday and saves space in the cooler.
Otherwise my diet includes: -Bloody Marys, every morning!!!!!!!!
Bloody Marys are proof that God loves us, and wants us to drink in the morning (aka "be happy").
Ever tried the mix Zing Zang? I think it's made here in the IL/WI area so I don't know if it is sold outside of the mid-west; but if you can get your hands on a bottle it is life-changing!
P.S. thanks for the greatest bonnabreakfast idea ever. We will definitely be premixing a batch to take with.

Actually I was wondering what exactly the ice situation is at Roo. Can ice be purchased easily?

alot of people suggest the method on taking dry ice and putting it on the bottom of a cooler with a towel over it and then laying waterbottles on top to freeze and then perishables on top of that.. frozen water bottle keep everything else cool and are ice cold when you take them out and remain that way as you go through the day in the heat(well atleast until they melt all the way
We eat like kings when we go. Big Breakfast every day. Barbeque Chicken for dinner one night. Steaks with baked potatoes one night. Burgers and Dogs when needed. Those chopped up bags of potatoes are pretty handy for breakfast.
Another suggestion I will make are the "Uncle Ben's Quick Rice" boxes...you add rice and the powder sauce to water, and boil for 10 minutes, and PRESTO, you've got a lot of yummy (and cheesy if you go for the Cheese and Brocc. variety) rice.
If you pre-cook some diced chicken breast before hand (like before coming to 'Roo), and throw it in the pot in the last 5 minutes, you've got a serious energy providing meal for yourself and at least one other person. (I usually make 2 or 3 boxes at a time which of course feeds a lot of peeps)
"We're no longer called Sonic Death Monkey. We're on the verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive, but just for tonight, we are Barry Jive and his Uptown Five. "
Coming from a Marine.. If you have a local Army Surplus store, stop in and pick up some MRE's. They are super high in calories to keep you going all day, and don't taste bad.. even after living on them for seven months haaha
I found out last year the best food for me was canned soup (non creambased) straight out of the can if left out of the sun is delicious, and easy to make! Just open the lid lol. That's going to my main staple. That and Cliff Bars.
I plan on making a huge salad with all the good stuff...chicken, feta, olives, cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, etc. etc. Put it in a big ass tupperware and throw it in the cooler. Quick, healthy, and cool (it'll actually relieve the heat a bit). Perfect for midday.
