i'm right there in the DD area with ya...and i haven't found any tanks with shelf bras that semi work, even, so i just say, screw it.
I don't care if the bra straps show a little bit, b/c I know they will on any dresses that I come across to wear, too.
I did, however, buy a really nice cami at walmart last year, just a plain dark blue and it's held up better than my express one I found at Marshalls a few years back...

Meg, I know exactly what you mean! Drives me bonkers. Although with my Kariza, I actually want a tank that's tighter than normal. Somehow it works. But everything else, keep the stretch far far away from me!
What I hate is that many of the shelf bras are too small for larger boobs - they end up pushed out and you are prone to falling out or having nearby babies lurch towards your bosom. I like the big shelf bras that pretty much are just an extra layer so I can wear my bra. ;D
This conversation is SOOOO much better than the govt telecon I am on
Ok - my prob with shelf bras - I really need an underwire to put my boobs back where god intended them to be - as I said - 3 kids - and gravity - along with age have done a number.
I looked at both of those tanks from Target and that may be what I do - I really just want tank tops (or camisoles - whatever you wanna call them) shirts with spaghetti straps - made out of plain cotton t-shirt type material that does not cling to the fat roll on my stomach - more of a baby doll type appraoch - I guess - similar to that one from Target
wait - found it - I must go to Target tonight and try on one for myself
my issues with shelf bras: not only do they not hold up my DDDs, but the jugs pull the shelf (and therefore kneckline) down so I have major cleavage all over the place. And it's not easy finding nice camis that don't have a shelf Also, I have a very long torso-so camis tend to be too short on me. So I have to find something long AND with no shelf bra. Damn near impossible

see - I don't have the long torso - but I want it long to cover the stomach/muffin top issues

oooh man i have this same problem. everyone thinks it's great to be tall cause ya get long stems with it, but not me. i've got a long torso to make up for it. all my shirts end up being belly shirts. i have to wear wife beaters [hate that term, dont know what else to call em] under EVERYTHING!

I don't have a long torso, but I have big honkin' C's on a small frame. The boobage juts out enough to pull the bottom of the cami up to belly-shirt land! It's even worse if I put a bra underneath a regular small-sized cami, instead of wearing a shelf bra cami. Cami's seem mainly made for people with smaller boobs.
Oh, and welcome billypilgrim! Thanks for the the link. The more you learn here, the more girls will like you, leading to a net increase in testosterone. Seriously! We have studies and everything!
Normally I just ignore the shelf bra and wear my own bra with it. Demi cups often help so my breasts aren't all under my chin (I'm a medium D) or just spilling out.
Otherwise I'm like Clarity and the neckline gets pulled into all sorts of unattractiveness.
Although I did just get this top in last night - you tie the straps yourself which helps pull the girls up enough so I'll be able to go braless on the farm. Yay!
Plus it's nice and roomy so I can avoid muffin-topness. And it's day-glo yellow. And has pockets.
^^^ OMG, that is so cute! And pockets? That is the BEST. Why do they presume that all women carry pocketbooks? I hate pocketbooks! Lip gloss, ID, some cash and my keys. More dresses, pants, skirts, etc. need pockets!

I've seen them called boy-beaters, but I think it's a little too trying to be cutesy for me. I usually just say ribbed tank. Of course, I usually only say that to my sister and she's the one who got me saying it.

I know! Right now it only comes in yellow and black and I own both. But maybe they'll add more color options soon.
^^^^That's really cute. Has anyone ever tried the shelf-bra dresses or shirts from Victoria Secret? I'm really interested, and am afraid to go through the hassle of getting one shpped to me and hating it and sending it back. I don't like shelf-bras, but VS is usually pretty good about marketing to larger chest women, and I assume they would be better quality than the cheap camis I've tried.

i should know this. i happen to work there. but alas. i don't. =P
in stores right now there are possibly some ribbed tanks and there's always basic camis in the pink line [blue, white, pink and grey] but yeah. that's all the help i can be.

lol...it always makes me laugh when big-chested girls say they're too big for shelf bras or halter tops or whatever. Not that I don't believe you, it just makes me realize how stupid certain kinds of clothing are. As a small chested girl, let me tell you, being small does NOT make it better. Shelf bras are absolutely a no go unless I'm looking for the washboard look. And halter tops and the like...well, I can wear them if I want to wear a strapless bra, but of course strapless bras just refuse to stay up because I don't have enough boobage to hold them up. People who aren't small chested tend to think we can go braless easily, but I definitely can't - I would have no boobs whatsoever!
I really need to hit up the local Tar-jay. Thanks for another reason, dcbee!
Often wondered about those VS shelf-bra dresses, myself. I guess I'm a little worried that the cloth will be too thick and too form fitting for the heat. Would love to hear from someone who knows about them, too.
And thanks for the reality check, plasticpepper. Guess where there are boobs, there are problems!

i found this out when i was helping a friend who's a tiny, skinny as all get out, small girl find some clothes to wear once and i was like 'that shirt doesn't look quite right..something's missing..OH YEAH!'
so then i decided there's really not that much of a happy medium...

So two fun things: At stevemadden.com/, you can customize shoes!! They are expensive and not for Roo but fun as hell. You have to scroll down on the home page to find the link.
About boobs: I had big ones (almost DDs) and then I lost 30 pounds and now I have Cs. The big ones were cumbersome, but I miss them a lot of times. I feel a bit...deflated now. It takes a pretty decent bra to get the, as my friends and I call it, "put your d*ck in it cleavage" lol, when before I had it like everyday!
(Sorry if that was a bit graphic but you know what I'm talking about!)

Aww. I really like that drawstring tube dress, herecomesthesun, but it's made of French terry. I'm betting it would be really warm, during the day. Too bad. The price was sooo right, dammit.

i gained some weight due to hospitalization and health issues at the beginning of '07, and while i wasn't quite plus size, i didn't want to show off my new buddha-belly, so i got some shirts like this from target:
(this pic is from victoria's secret, i couldn't find it on the target website)
they are good because they emphasized what got bigger (my chest...i went up almost 2 cup sizes!) and minimized my tummy. it just kind of skims over that part. i'm sure you girls could find one with a more modest neckline or wear a bikini top underneath if you aren't into showing so much cleavage. i tried a couple of tops with shelf bras, and you girls are right, those shelf bras are definitely not made for big-chested girls. it stinks because i used to love wearing them when i was a bit smaller up top.
the ones i got were from target-the mossimo red line 100% cotton, no shelf bra, and they were really fun bright colors. i wore them with bermuda shorts at 'roo last year, and i was super comfy and i felt better knowing i wasn't showing my tummy off to all of bonnaroo.
i just thought i'd share what worked for me last year.
p.s.-to you girls that have long torsos--have you ever considered the maternity department? i know it seems crazy, but the shirts in the maternity section are a bit longer, and they're not always cut for a huge baby bump. they seem like they would be flattering to bigger-chested girls also. i have a couple of maternity shirts that i got on clearance at target (liz lange) and they were just too adorable to pass up. no one can tell that they are maternity shirts, (they just look like regular baby-doll cut shirts, with one that is looks completely normal except that the sides are gathered a bit) and i actually get compliments on them. it's just a thought, hopefully it works for you girls

oh, and whilst perusing the vicky's secret website, i found their line of "layering shirts." i'm thinking these would be super cute with a bikini top underneath or even one of the bandeaus they sell to wear with them. perhaps a bit pricey, but some of them are on sale right now.
here are the ones i like:
and they're just as cute from the front they look like they would be cool, comfortable, and cute...perfect for 'roo! what do you girls think?
