I started going to a boxing gym over a month ago. Best workout possible. My strength and stamina have already increased exponentially, and I expect to be able to dance more feverishly than ever this Bonnaroo. I'd definitely suggest it if you're serious about getting in shape, and it's not like you need to compete (although it's a fun option).

Running's horrible for your joints. A very high impact exercise. It's great for toning and weight loss, but you can get very similar results on an elliptical machine that is no/low impact.
Would running up a fairly steep incline be a lot better? I realized after asking the question that the impact on your joints is rough when running, but in going up, say, the ridge in my backyard seems like it'd reduce the impact a great deal.
Is that a wise assumption?
I'd say running on a softer surface like grass would be easier on the joints, and running uphill would give you more benefit per impact. Riding a bike is a good alternative to running, to eliminate impact, as is swimming.

i loooooooove riding my bike. and you're right, grass is easier on the joints, however, running uphill is also incredibly hard on your knees. couple that with the impact of running, and its not all that great either.
HAC (Link) - My athletic club... It's good stuff! Even has a water park, a DDR room, tons of big LCD's all over the place and on every cardio machine, a cafe that sells gourmet stuff... beer, wine, sake (odd but true), and other good stuff.

I used to wrestle in high school and I miss those training sessions so bad. They were pretty much torture but they worked. I need to find a strength training schedule to help with my training for the marathon. I've been avoiding my gym just because running outside on the pavement is harder then on a tredmill plus I like to be outside in general. Any outdoor strength training ideas?

Speaking off which, I'm off to the club!
Dang, thats like is the YMCA was nice. I prefer more of a dungeon for my purposes, but that looks pretty sweet.

i was a basketball girl
i was in the best shape of my life my freshman year in high school. for WARM-UPS we had to do mountains, and coach would time us. a mountain is running the length of the court, and progressing up to however many lengths she wants you to run, then back down.
we always had to do 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1. if everyone didn't make the time, we'd have to repeat that part of the drill. after that, we started practice...

I hope you have not been weight training every day for the past month only missing 1 day... That would honestly be terrible for your body...
I was a Division 1 athlete (baseball)... I'm doing a very similar workout from when I was training for the Majors (blew my shoulder out, so there went that dream). Thanks for the concern, but I do know about switching off muscle groups on different days. I'd say that the weight training is 5-6 days a week, and the cardio is everyday.
Thats great man... Just making sure you were not one of those guys that thinks he has to hit the weights every day working every muscle in the body... I know guys like that and I have seen alot of them get injured! I am just getting into my work outs myself... 3 years of being lazy in college has had horrible results for me... I guess the remote control arm work outs were not enough!
I am young and running on a tread mill really does not hurt my joints at all... I usually do treadmill one day and elliptical the next... I honestly do prefer the elliptical over the treadmill... I hate the stationary bike though its way to boring... If I am going to bike im going to hop on my mountain bike for like 5 miles or so...
Cardio every day isn't bad. Resistance training every day is bad. Seeharlie, that's a great plan. The only thing I would add would be something that makes you sweat and raise your body temp, especially if you're coming from a cooler climate.
Yeah, I plan on doing other things to get in shape, just not sure what right now.
But you do sweat while swimming, you just don't realize it. I remember a lot of my team mates would get dehydrated during our longer practices because you just don't realize how much fluid you're losing.
I think I'll be fine with the heat, so long as I'm in shape. I've dealt with the heat and humidity of the Philippines, so I kinda know what to expect.
i've been running five days a week since august pretty much, and now i work with a trainer three days a week doing resistance training, and still do running or the treadclimber five or six times a week. running sucked for me until i got the right shoes, after that i was good to go. a lot of the joint pain and discomfort that i was experiencing came from not having the proper footwear, not from over-running. i've dropped about 25 pounds, nice and slow, and i feel better than i ever have.

I hit the weights four days a week. Mon, Tues, off Weds, on Thurs, Friday. Weekends are for relaxing. I do martial arts three days a week, but Aikido isn't much good for cutting weight or getting a real workout. Now kick boxing, that's another story. In 90 days we can have a pose down.

My thing is Ashtanga Yoga for 90 minutes 3-4 times a week. A lot of people think of yoga as sitting around in uncomfortable poses saying "Om." But this is strenuous stuff with lots of movement. So there's a strength element to it, along with cardio, flexibility, and balance. And last, but not in any way least, there are amazingly beautiful women in these classes.
And advice to newbies training for Roo: Don't forget the smile muscles. If you're not used to this level of bliss, you can get facial cramps.
I've just been walking about 1 - 2miles a day at a nearby park. I live in alabama so I'm used to the heat (tennessee in june will actually be cooler than where I'm at), so I'm not too worried about it.
