A lot of what the "spirit of bonnaroo" is about is the community feeling. The feeling of being kind and friendly toward strangers. As the identity of bonnaroo changes it would be an incredible thing if this spirit that has been created remains for years to come. I've heard from so many people that bonnaroo was unlike anything they had been to before, the way people were so nice toward each other. I mean thats not a brand new thing. That spirit came from the "jamband" community though. I'm really not about "scenes" and lumping people together but the jam community has always been known for how tight knit it is. It's even like that for the musicians who are always sitting in with one another. I guess what i'm getting at is there are roots and I think thats why some people get a little upset that things are changing quite a bit. I always just say if you dont' like it then don't go. I'm not going this year but I'm not gonna sit hear and try and tell people negative things about it.

thats cool... we can have another place to argue pointlessly.. i though this thread was appropriatly named to discuss the issue of where the heady additons were seeing as how that was what it was called but now we can have two of the same by different names...although the poll will im sure give us all plenty to bicker about....super duper! its truly pointless... i guess that those of us who wanna have these discussions with out all of these problems we can message each other... hardly seems as enjoyable but the few only get a certain amount of time before these yahoosshow up and kill it by telling us how wrong and horrible we are and how much they hate talking to us.. i sure wish someone would take that gun away form their head and let them stop reading and responding to our thoughts

thats the first post that started the thread seems like a topic for what this year is lacking as well as the changes that roo is undergoing

"mtv, american idol, and radio stations that play pop" - wow, well I've never seen anyone on Idol cover a Radiohead song-- but I HAVE seen them cover Allman Brothers. Funny.
The lineup schedule of Roo does not have "roots." But Bonnaroo's spirit certainly does.
So consider the fact that the more bands you like to lump into "jam" the more you risk creating a genre, which is NOT what Roo is about-- Roo is about poking holes in our notion of genre.
It's just frustrating that people bother to start threads just to piss on what other people are happy about, or trusting. Peace.
First things first, im not trying to play the "mainstream" vs everything else game here. Im trying to support Bonnaroo's diversification by shedding light on the fact that several styles of music commonly represented in TN are few and far between, if present at all this year.
Its very very obvious that Bonnaroo has in the previous 4 years established "roots" not only in the various styles of music booked at the Roo but as you say the energy as well. It doesnt matter what the idols cover, this isnt Allman bros. vs Radiohead either. No one is lumping bands under the label "Jam" we're using the term "Jamband" to communicate a style of music that encompasses many many genres, in effect "poking holes in genres" as you say. Last but not least i DID NOT start this thread to piss on what other people are happy about, and nothing i said in my post should lead anyone to think that. I have every right to express my unhappiness with something as you do your happiness, i said nothing with the intention to start arguements and im not giving "lectures on band choice" to anyone... Calm down and let people discuss, im not whatever your silly little idea of a whiney jam kid is...
Oh and by the way, comparing Radioheads following to the Dead is absolutely LUDACRIS...

Ugh, I wish I hadn't read this thread now. I am so tired of all this whining.
mainstream was not mentioned once before this clown showed up and started throwing it around...it is exactly at this post that this thread became a big argument instead of a discussion... i wish we could get these people to grow up a bit... if your tired of hearing about a subject quit reading it... problem solved.....

What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.

Luda is sitting in with Phil and Friends on Sunday...
Oh my god i cant beleive some stupid little narrow minded snot nosed "Jam" kid(me) even joked about that!!
Excuse me while i "tie myself to the jamband mast" so that people can pass judgement on me and write me off as an uneducated and closed minded music fan.

i know man we are such closed minded jam freaks.... man did you hear that lyrics born jam!!! that was sweet... and shooter jennings jammin little white lines, oh wait whats that popin out of my player oh its ween... what am i puttin in some bill frisell... i really should open my mind.. this jam is good but im thinking there has got to be something else out there... i wish i wasnt so closed minded
I don't think the problem is I'm close-minded. I'm all for indie acts. I wouldn't mind spending money on Radiohead CDs or Sonic Youth. The thing is I was hoping to see jam bands live, because I never get to, and live jam bands seem to me more interesting than other live acts. For example, I wouldn't whine so much if bonnaroo was taking more of a jazz direction. I love jazz because it's good to see live. Indie and alternative are great to listen to anytime, but for live acts, I'd like to see jam bands.
I whine because I was hoping for more jam bands to be added, which was something to expect since, well, it's Bonnaroo and they've done it in years past. And the additions are getting worse every time instead of better (for me). Do you think i shouldn't whine?
i agree gnome, i think the live aspect is kinda what it comes down too. ive always kinda thought of jambands as a more broad all inclusive offshoot of jazz. all for diversity, if i have one gripe about the "new jam" scene its that alot of them sound alike, so i dont miss i long list of ho-hum jambands, but wheres my greyboy. come on round 5

i think that the horse has decayed.... we are just beating a smelly spot on the ground now....everyones got an opinion or a beef so fuck it man... i know im having a good time this year regardles of whos there...if jessica simpson plays three sets i will just have to eat that much more of the party favors....next year i will be evaluating the situation more before i throw my money at roo... if i had waited till 10 k mad etheir announcements i would have gone there.. which i am still hoping to.. gotta get that jamband fix somewhere and waka is out of the question for me...10k is in the hope to be able to do category
ya that definitly just seemed like a hip-hop round, and not a bad hip-hop round a tthat, but still, why they gotta make us wait like that. not that hip-hop cant be 'jam' though

cypress hill flowin over some MMW better yet if galiatic was there and they rapped over that, shit would be funkyyyyyy
yup, before the first two i was kinda unsure bout roo this year, or at least i was gonna wait till they anounced some more bands, then the first two came and i was like allright cool, and got my tix. but i wasnt thinking they were gonna end it there.
also i gotta say, i still do have a cypress hill poster up in my room. I saw them at horde fest like mad years ago. from what i remember it was a pretty good show. they had some huge inflatable dude, it was pretty sweet.
Edit: wait, not horde fest, duh, smokin grooves tour, same thing though
Yeah, I suppose they could be saving jam bands for later. But the thing is I (and I think a couple others) kind of were getting our hopes up for that to happen soon. I really don't want to do it again, because at the moment I don't think they're adding more jam bands. Sure, I'm still hoping they do, but not expecting it as I was before.
Hey everyone... look, I know it looks like I obviously stirred some crap up here, but the only reason I said anything was because of comments like: "not to be negative again just seems to be more and more..." and such. I was quoting you Keith on the Idol bits among other things.
Hey I am the LAST person that wants to talk about this any more (as my oft-quoted initial foray into this thread shows). And please note that my original post in here was LAMENTING that this thread had taken the turn, like many others, into bashing or complaining again- even if it was without the opposing opinion. So I think we're on the same page, even if we are arguing about the particulars.
I am very sorry, looking back I feel like I was following the trend of this devolving into these same arguments, and I sincerely apologize for that.
With that in mind, I will not rehash or answer rhetorical queries. Yes, I've been to Bonnaroo before. And thank you all for being so kind and polite of those of us that don't feel the same way as you.
