"Although usually associated with psychedelic rock, jam bands often draw on various musical traditions, including funk, progressive bluegrass, blues, country music, rock and progressive rock, folk music and jazz."
Thank you, "jamband" is more of a musical community than it is a specific genre or style... and i would definately include the Flecktones... People shouldnt get so hung up on definitions like keith said its just a word used to communicate an idea...
what pisses me off about the hardcore jam community is that while they bitch about the lack of american acts, where are they when amadou & mariam or the refugee all stars were announced? why haven't they talked about the need for more international acts that jam out? why is there no demand for guys like lobi traore or femi kuti to be announced?
it's real hard for me to take opinions seriously of people who don't acknowledge the international flavor to this year's festival or who all but dismiss hip/hop additions as being trite when there are few scenes as improvisational as hip/hop is.
i understand getting pissed that bands like clap your hands say yeah or death cab for cutie are added to the list, but honestly, hating on bands that do jam but just don't jam in the way you're used to strikes me as convenient and close minded. and that's the last thing i expect from real jamband heads.

i really think that the talk got ficused on who shouldnt be there when in reality it is all about who should be there.... all types of music should be at roo... i think that for the most part it is obvious that jambands are not represented as much as they typically have been at roo.... thats the problem and i think the discussion has moved towards these other bands because it feels like they are intentionally phasing out jambands in favor of these other bands as there is more of them and less of the traditional type of acts... acts like deatcab are just one more i dont have tt worry about trying to catch...

I think you're missing his point-- especially when you say "these" other bands. His point is that there is a far more diverse crowd here than is being given credit to, and while harp on Death Cab and a few others, there are tons of bands from across the spectrum being added. But, with each addition, it becomes increasingly obvious that it's a qualified list of jambands in one corner and everyone else in another-- and that's the attitude that he and I and many others are taking issue.

well it always gets reduced to that when it is not truly what its about...everyone who has a differing opinion has an attitude well i personally have made it clear that i love the new additions.... so for me anyways it is not jam versus everything else(your post seemed to be directed to me)i think it is traditional roo lineup versus new roo line up.....hip hop has been in roo since the beginning, if roo wants to grow its community it should expand the music that got it all started, i wouldnt try to reinvent the wheel in the name of growth....by the way has anyone noticed that since this shift has taken place teh community has not grown? it has gotten smaller...i will take the old lineups that sold out an brought in the greatest community on earth as opposed the festival slowly shrinking in the name of diversifying that community which many would argue was impossible to improve upon
Keith, If you think the lineups are the sole reason of lagging ticket sales you're pretty out of touch. The growth of jamband-only festivals has doubled, and ticket sales in general have tanked for everything.
And if you "love" the new additions, try not making snide comments about the kind of people it will bring, making harsh commentary on Death Cab and more. If it was just a calm comment and not constant whining I think you'd find a lot less resistance. And you have all people have made it an "us" versus "them."

And Doobiedewey, I would expect an announcement about Pearl Jam any day now.

What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.
well pearl jam would certainly round out the complete change of roos format.... i love them and havent seen them... same thing with cypress hill... but it is exactly this that is fueling this issue..its not that thse bands are good or bad..which is better or worse it is that pearl jam, dcfc, cypress hill.and others are a signifigant change in the format of the lineup...call it whining if ya want.... but to me it would be like disney switching to making pornos...its just not right to those of us who grew to expect a certain thing from them....but hey i will have a great time and i cannot wait for roo to finally arrive...the times are a changing and ill just have to roll with it... but one should be able to express an opinion without being accused of whining and hating...to some people its us versus them but those are people who do not understand waht roo is all about...to those who understand it, this is a conversation about roo and the direction its going whether you approve of the changes or dislike them...not about jam music versus other types....just roos past versus roos current form....its unfortunat that certain bands get named in the process as it makes it seem as though it is hate towrads them when it isnt... the most hateful things ive seen on here were about my chemical romance (which isnt even playing at roo) and were posted by many of the same people saying that were are hating on these other bands when in fact we are just questioning if they are really right for a festival with the background that roo has...obviously you draw the line of whats right at roo at a different spot then i do but i never hated on a band like that.. i say to each thier own, thats why we have lollapalooza and coachella... and why we had roo to get away from that stuff
im sure that this is just more of my typical whinng though
for those who haven't been keepin up with pj recently, i think they definately belong in a roots jam based based festival like the roo probably more than fests like coachella and lolla. pearl jam definately improvise both their songs and their setlists all the time with set lengths hovering around the 2.5 - 3 hr mark.
they have certainly distanced themselves from most popular music. we're not talking 'bout a flavor of the month or a group of has beens. plus, they're very active politically and environmentally and have definately survived the post grunge fallout through hard work, touring and connecting with their fans.
i am discussing an issue... its all of you people that dont comment on the issue but on other peoples opinions of the issue that are creating anything that needs to be "fueled"
Post by Lucid Interval on Apr 3, 2006 22:43:28 GMT -5
All im gunna say is that you're both fueling and that no one i see is trying to make anything "jamband vs everyone else...
Usually what happens, is someone voices their opinion in a way that gets under someone elses skin, then that person of course has to pick out the flaws in the others logic leading to more fuel on the fire and more conflict.
We should all learn to take it as a grain of salt...
Lucid, I know you've seemed to turn over a new leaf on this in the last day or so, but acting like you haven't been a part of this is pretty patronizing to those of us who have been discussing this (with you even).
I have been very thorough in my responses- Lord knows I've tried to present my opinion with logic and steady opinion based on fact. And my posts, as far as I know, have not outright contradicted each other. There is really only two people who time and time again, will lay out their opinion (no matter how negative), can't take any real discussion of it- leading to heated argument and dubious statements, and then quickly make it into something about how whoever is calling them on the bullshit is being negative. And you can set your watch by it- in each thread it suddenly becomes preachy and holistic like they haven't been a part of it so far.
I have had some great conversations on here, except for experiences with just a couple of people. I would like either of these people to try and make it through the week without using the word "disappointment" or "unfortunately" in their casual posts. It's this initial negative vibe that sets everyone off and the cycle begins again. If we can agree on that, I will lay down my guns. But if you want this to be a venue where we all prepare and eagerly await a new Roo with bells on-- you CANNOT keep pissing on the parade and expect no one to say anything. And even more, you can't possibly further expect to defend your opinion with name calling, hyperbole and posts in other forums that directly contradict what you say in another.
Anything you can think of, you would have to just check it out for yourself. Not only the arguing but, almost all of them tend to come off as d*ckheads...oh and they hate on bonnaroo which is not cool.
roo stole there style...used to be roo just stole the jambands from coachellas lineup...now roo has stolen coachellas whole lineup and left them with tool depech mode and madonna....i would hate that too
The people on the Coachella board are funny. They argue for the sake of arguing, but it is often hilarious ( there was a 20 page thread on rock paper scissors being a three-beat or four-beat game as in rock, paper, scissors then show your choice or just rock, paper, scissors and you choose on the scissor and, by the way it is definitely a four-beat game). They do get on people that ask stupid or the same questions (which happens alot more over there because some of the bands on the coachella bill bring some very "naive" fans). People on this board are much nicer, but I am actually glad that there has been some discord because that brings a little emotion. Otherwise, we would not have got to read about the gang wars of Bonnaroo. Now, who would have wanted that?
Nice pull Paraniodbot. So does the guy who went to nationals always try to pull out RPS on his friends when it comes to designated driver, or who is paying for the pizza?

I really don't mean to stray so far off topic but:
For those new to the game, the only acceptable throws are Rock, Paper and Scissors. Any use of Dynamite, Bird, Well, Spock, Water, Match, Fire, God, Lightning, Bomb, Texas Longhorn, or other non-sanctioned throws, will result in automatic disqualification.
What the hell are these?!? Sounds like a Shaw Bros kung fu movie with each bad guy having their own specialty.
Bonnaroo needs a RPS tent for this year's activites.
Watch out, I might have to bust a Spock on your a s s. I just wish I knew what a Spock was. Is it a Vulcan Mind Meld thing or a Live, Long, and Prosper type thing. I think, I know a little too much about Star Trek.
