You're very right-- and add Pearl Jam there to that list of VIP drains. The Police and Dylan represent a potential draw of an older demographic with disposable income; Pearl Jam is beginning to invade that territory with the 30-somethings. PJ has offered packages to their Hawaii gigs that were VIP in nature and has also seen a legion of older fans with families now paying ALOT to follow to several shows. And, they have a fan base that is incredibly net savvy, looking for exclusives and using the Ten Club presales.
So, I would recommend that anyone wanting VIP to try and get them as early as possible. If these are our headliners, they will not be waiting until May to sell out.
That is exactly what I was thinking! The age demographic plays a huge part. Unfortunately I am on the way into that demo and you hit it spot on with PJ and "my" generation.
On a side: Get this sh!t, My wife spent a week in Hawaii with her mom in Dec, and PJ was playing that Sat night about 10 miles from where they were staying, AND THEY DIDN"T GO!!
I could've choked her when I found out she could've got tix for $65. But, she was with her mom....
It seems like a lot of the people who dont like the police headlining just know that they were a "pop" band in the 80's. When in fact, they've been around since the 70's, and played a lot more then pop music. They are a band you really have to check out before you can naysay on them.
Agreed. I was a little wary at first, but their sound has grown on me rapidly. Also, pop music gets an overly bad rap. To me artists like Tom Petty and Rush and the DMB all fit into pop music the same as the Police. I don't mean this negatively, just that music that appeals to the masses doesn't negate it's artistic credibility, and like you said the musicians in these bands are often excellent.
Ok, I'm not sure what form of the definition of the word 'pop' we're using... are we talking short for popular or are we talking simple, catchy song structure (aka verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus)? Cause I'm getting confused... DMB and Rush are popular, yes, but they don't exactly play pop music...
I think they have a pop element to them in the same way Elvis Costello or The Clash did. It's not like being pop is a bad thing, it just means you can write catchy songs that are both pop sounding and popular in the mainstream sense.
Whereas, a group like Fountains of Wayne just sounds pop, and isn't really all that popular mainstream.
They're all pop music. If they have an album sold nationally, they're all popular music, it really just depends how popular. That being said, I think a lot of the Police's music is even less pop-oriented than most of Rush or DMB. People just don't like the idea that the police can sell out stadiums, but then again so can DMB and (sometimes) Rush.
BTW, what's with people liking Rush? Maybe it's just me, but i think they're the shittiest, most overplayed (at least in canada) Zeppelin clone to ever cut an album (at least Zeppelin's eight-minute song about a wizard was actually good). Neil Peart's definition of the best possible drum solo is the one where he plays the largest variety of percussive objects in under twelve minutes. Geddy Lee sings like a little white girl, no wait i take that back, i don't want to offended any little white girls.
YYZ. Only good thing the band ever did. Why? NO SINGING GEDDY!!! Otherwise, yeah, they suck. The Police would be a good addition to Bonnaroo, though it may not EXACTLY fit with what the festival's message may be. In essence, The Police: Great draw, good band, and if available, why the devil not?
This is pretty exciting, although I still have suspicions that their info is from that same leak, which would make all this null and void.
edit: In response to this article, the admin of the listserv (where I pulled this) said, "But I can tell you, from an inside Bonnaroo source - these are all rumors my friends. All rumors."

It could be- but I'd like to hear from someone in or near Manchester who has picked up a paper. The Manchester Times website only has one online story per issue and the rest isn't printed online. Anyone? Anyone?

Hey RooSKew I saw String Cheese down here in FL last October and they covered So Lonely. It was a very high energy very non-SCI version which was pretty damn cool. 10/20/06 Pompano Beach show.

That's awesome... I've heard the Emmet Swimming cover from their live album and that's awesome too...
The Police will rehearse for their upcoming reunion tour at Lions Gate Studios in Vancouver, according to reports today (Jan. 25) by the city's classic rock radio station, CFMI. Details of the summer trek, the band's first in more than two decades, will be announced next month.
In addition, the Police are strongly rumored to be performing as part of the opening segment of the Grammy telecast on Feb. 11 from Los Angeles' Staples Center. At deadline, a Grammy spokesperson had no information on a possible appearance by the group.
Before the Police get busy, Sting has a three-week European tour on tap in support of his lute album, "Songs From the Labryinth." The outing, which finds the artist accompanied by lutenist Edin Karamazov, begins Feb. 18 in Paris and wraps March 12 in Stuttgart, Germany.
On Feb. 20, Deutsche Grammophon will release a CD/DVD companion piece to "Labryinth," dubbed "The Journey And The Labyrinth: The Music Of John Dowland." The project will include a DVD chronicling Sting's fascination with 16th century musician John Dowland and a concert at St. Luke's Church in London.
The audio from that show, which features the Police's "Message in a Bottle" and Robert Johnson's "Hell Hound," is represented on the CD.
It's true, although there is no official word. But when CBS' live signal goes to the Staples Center on Feb. 11, director Ken Ehrlich will have scored a coup: The Police will appear and sing most likely one of three songs: "Every Breath You Take," "Message in a Bottle" or "Roxanne."
And — surprise of surprises — this should guarantee an announcement forthcoming of a huge North American tour, followed by dates in Europe, all beginning in late spring. But the group will not, I repeat will not, appear at either the Coachella or Glastonbury festivals. There have been rumors to that effect, but my sources say they are untrue.
Hmmm, it's almost as if they left one rumored festival appearence off the list?
Yeah, I went and read that article, but I got the feeling that the guy didn't even know about Bonnaroo. I think he's heard of Coachella and Glastonbury, but not Bonnaroo. I still think they'll be there, it just makes so much sense, but I wouldn't use this as evidence on the positive.

yeah i don't know. I mean what their talking like is a tour that The Rolling Stones or U2 would put together and just to be totally honest i don't see either one doing Bonnaroo or any music festival anytime soon. I would absolutely love if The Police was there but i don't know if this article proves or disproves their appearance at Bonnaroo.
I really don't think the Police will be at Bonnaroo this year or any year. If they are I will be thrilled, but I really don't think they are going to play any festivals. I really hope that I am wrong though.

I would be shocked if The Police were at Bonnaroo. But if they pull it off that would trump all headliners anyone could pull out and definitely put Bonnaroo on a different level. Radiohead definitely was a step up last year in my opinion so i guess anything is possible. It is weird that they didn't mention Bonnaroo though because i would say that rumors for The Police being at Bonnaroo are just as strong as they were/are for Coachella or Glastonbury.
I wouldn't be surprised either way. Bonnaroo is the only festival that would truly permit them a chance at an epic set. But they're pretty much big enough to do whatever they please.

I've never really liked any of Sting's solo stuff, but a Police reunion would be awesome! But I am surprised that they are evidentally (at least considering) reuniting at all. A few years ago I saw an clip of Stewart Copeland in wich he sounded more than a little bitter about the break-up, saying that he found-out about it from a RollingStone writer during an interview.
The other thread shouldn't have been closed. Before this, it was just rumors, but the Police really are confirmed to reunite now.
"SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Jan. 30, 2007) -- In an historic GRAMMY® moment, the Police (Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers) will reunite and perform together for the first time on the GRAMMYs when they open the 49th Annual GRAMMY® Awards telecast on Feb. 11, it was announced today by The Recording Academy®. With five GRAMMY Awards to their slate of accolades, the Police, one of the most famous bands in the world, create a purely original sound by infusing reggae with pop and rock -- a sound that will be heard 'round the world from the GRAMMY stage."

If they decide to do a festival i think Bonnaroo is as good as gold. I hope that is the reason they are announcing the lineup Feb.14. I really don't want to get my hopes up but the pieces are coming together quite nicely so i can see why it is a rumor. Pearl Jam was a pretty strong rumor too though. So i don't know what to expect.

I'm not banking on any band anymore. After the Pearl Jam rumors fell to shit, I was pretty let down.
Actually I lied, I am banking on the Police. It was just too much of a coincidence that Bonnaroo would announce it's line-up two weeks later than it usually does, and the Police happen to be officially reuniting 3 days prior at the Grammy's. Other than the Police, and confirmed acts though, I'm not gonna count any band definately in or out.
Top 5 I am hoping for:
The Police (counting them as confirmed, so here are 5 more ) Neil Young (in any form) The Mars Volta Wilco Modest Mouse My Morning Jacket

it looks like the Police reunion is actually happening and that is very exciting. i will see them in concert somewhere if they tour!! BUT..... there isn't any real evidence that they are playing Bonnaroo. if someone knows of real proof then please post it. some of the articles have said they would play "festivals" but that doesn't really mean anything. it is all just speculation. i hope they play Roo, but i am gonna reserve my enthusiasim for Valentine's Day.
