"Tickets will be scaled primarily at $225, $90 and $50. Tickets for Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal will go on sale Feb. 17." Do you think the other headliners will get any money?
In what is destined to be an historic run, the Police will embark on their first tour in 23 years, beginning May 28 at the GM Arena in Vancouver, Billboard.com can exclusively reveal. As part of a tour that will play arenas and stadiums internationally through the end of the year, the band will also headline the June 16 date of the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tenn.
As expected, the tour will be produced worldwide by the Next Adventure in association with RZO Entertainment, under the direction of Arthur Fogel, president of TNA and chairman of global music for TNA parent Live Nation. Further details of the tour will be announced today (Feb. 12) during a press conference at the Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, Calif.
The announcement comes in the wake of the Police's dynamic performance of "Roxanne" last night to open the Grammy Awards on CBS. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are the Police and we're back," Sting shouted as the group kicked into the song.
Talk of a Police 30th anniversary tour has been rampant in the previous weeks. Sources close to the tour exclusively tell Billboard.com that the plan is for the Police to tour North America through the first week of August, then play the U.K. and Europe, returning to North America in late October.
The rest of the world will follow, including Mexico, South America, Japan and possibly Australia and New Zealand through the end of the year. About 80 shows are currently on the books, including 24 cities in North America. There also is the possibility that the Police will play several stadiums both in the U.S. and abroad, but as of now Fenway Park in Boston is the only confirmed stadium date. No festivals other than Bonnaroo are currently planned.
Best Buy is the North American sponsor of the tour. Tickets will be scaled primarily at $225, $90 and $50. Tickets for Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal will go on sale Feb. 17. Other markets, including Boston and New York, will go on sale Feb. 20. Ticketmaster will orchestrate a pre-sale through a newly created Police tour website a few days prior to the general public onsales. It is highly likely that the Police will be the top-grossing tour of 2007.
Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland split in 1984 following the release of their most successful album, "Synchronicity," although they regrouped for a handful of concerts in 1986 before breaking up for good.
The Police's lone public performance prior to the Grammys was at the band's 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group also played an impromptu set at Sting's 1992 wedding to Trudie Styler.
Here's the biggest question. Is this the huge surprise they've been telling us is coming? If so, what's the point on waiting until Wednesday? The cat is out of the bag.
I'm thinking they have something bigger then The Police up their sleeves. This is a great addition, and they will be the perfect Friday night headliner, but I think the really big Saturday act is yet to be announced.

They are the Saturday night headliner...according to billboard.

I would think that this is wishful thinking...how much bigger than the Police reunion be. I think they can run a newer band and a jamband out there and it would be a solid line-up.
You can't keep raising the bar every year..at some point people will be let down.

OH my.
They absolutely killed it last night...the band looked awesome. I think this is great news. The Police are going to absolutely destroy Saturday night at 'Roo. I'm so excited!

yay!! this is definitely exciting! but since the police want so much money do you think that bonnaroo will skimp on the other bands??
Not a chance. Remember, the lineup was probably in place for the most part (initially the artist announcement was going to come at the end of January, the Police reformation was arguably what caused the announcement to get pushed back to February). I have a feeling that The Police are simply icing on top of an already delicious cake.

My guess is they get paid less, but they probably like the idea of playing to a field of 80,000 young people instead of the usual suits that will buy up the all the good ($200) seats at all their other shows... That and bonnaroo probably pampers them like crazy, super VIPs...
So who is going to guest with them? Or will we see any other special appearances at the festival by police members?
i wish i could say i was excited at ALL about this
I'm not terribly overwhelmed by this either, but I gotta look at the positives: >I'm not going to miss the end of the shows right before them Saturday, because I won't mind being far back for their set >If there's a can't miss late night, I'll be able to dip a song or two early from the Police and get up front for the late nights >Even with all that considered, there's still 2+ hours to sit back and enjoy a rare performance: the only Police festival show (as planned so far)
I really doubt they'll play another festival. Bonnaroo booked "the only U.S. festival performance" from Radiohead last year and got great exposure. I'd expect they'll try to stick with this formula, since Coachella and Glasto missed, and ACL and Lolla just aren't big enough.
I like your viewpoint, too, Gtwrecked. I'm a big fan but it's good to see the non-fans aren't too dissapointed.
