i think the idea of having the arguably biggest headliner named "The Police" may give off a bad vibe. maybe they will change their name to "The Civilians" or something to that affect.
I'll take the Police at Bonnaroo over the police at wakarusa anyday

well, i guess i am pretty late to this news!! (damn silly work keeping me busy!) i'm not a huge police fan, but i think that is pretty awesome in a classic kind of way (classic for a child of the 80's, anyway ;D) it might be a good one for to listen to while relaxing in vip!... i don't really need to "see" them... but i think it will be really cool to hear so many songs i love.

I would guess a certain number of people will go to see the Police only (5k?) They will be arriving late and going home early so that should help traffic a bit??? And to make everyone happy, they will spend the whole night covering Phish - ha ha ha. Oh darn, there goes the Karma.... I would like to see Toots as the leadin too but can wait to see him Sunday afternoon too - that was a good vibe.

Good point klon. Because it is thus far the only show The Police play in that area of the United States there is a good chance of a lot of day (night) trippers on Saturday.

Its working for me, id say we're still definatly getting the lineup wednesday, its in the announcment of the police. The police were pretty much the biggest band of the 80's, and i have a feeling synchronicity is one of the highest selling albums in history, i guess thats a pretty dissapointing career....
Outlandos d'Amour November, 1978 US sales: Platinum
Reggatta de Blanc October, 1979 US sales: Platinum
Zenyatta Mondatta October, 1980 US sales: 2x Platinum
Ghost in the Machine October, 1981 US sales: 3x Platinum
Synchronicity June, 1983 US sales: 8x Platinum
and thats just the us sales. they were just as big in the uk, and all around the world. thats a hell of a career for anyone, and they did it in less then 5 years. i am not overly excited about them at roo. but they are one of those bands i want to see before i die and after listening to the live album i am more excited then i was. i think it will be a good show. i think they are going to have to stretch thier set times a bit. although i guess they can get away with a short set like petty did.

It's telling that The Police have forced Superfly to co-announce their appearance 2 days before the official lineup announcement. No other band has done that to them. Thus, you can tell the Police is huge simply because they are calling the shots; Bonnaroo cannot control them.
Another thing worth noting - it would've been cool if The Police @ Bonnaroo had been kept a secret, but with that date leaking the festival has gotten unprecedented publicity. Suddenly the Bonnaroo name is everywhere, from VH1 classic to CNN. It's great for the festival for headlines to say "Police visiting Bonnaroo, Fenway on Reunion tour"

Great point... I knew it was big when my parents (and I'm 30+) even emailed me saying they saw Bonnaroo on the news yesterday.

I'm with ya, rooskew. Three different people I know, none of whom follow the festival circuit by any means, have been seriously waiting for the Police tour announcement. Two of them contacted me yesterday when they looked and saw Bonnaroo in the mix.
Has anyone brought up the possibility of guest spots? I say this partly to counter the notion that their appearance is less special because it's just one show out of a whole tour. Now I already assume Superfly has got them down to play a 2 or perhaps 2 1/2 hour show, so it'll already be something special. But what about those guests? Assuming Les is there, it would rock to see him jump on stage and jam with Stuart and duel with Sting. Who else might possibly get up there?
It's not really related, but Sting did say it would only be the three of them on stage on this tour, with no other musicians.
As to guests, it would be really neat. I don't know who/what/where but it would be nice to see them take a chance and bring someone on stage with them. I think it depends a lot on who is at the fest, if there's anyone they have a history with etc.
So I'm not going to Roo for the first time this year (baby on the way), and I've secretly been hoping that I would find the lineup a little uninspiring and wouldn't feel too bad.....Let the jealousy and envy begin. I really didn't think the Police would be coming, and I can't believe I'm going to miss it. I am officially hopeing the rest of the lineup sucks to make me feel better
Anyone not excited should really do yourself a favor and check out some live stuff (the "Driven to Tears" on the Message in a Box boxed set is my favorite example). Stewart Copeland shines on the live stuff in a very different way than he does in Oysterhead (more focused, restrained, groove-oriented, driven). This is something very different than a "sing-along nostalgia act" (which can be nice). They will rock your socks.
Another very highly recommended Police primer: Their videos DVD has a little documentary on it that has a great little interview about the creative process with each of the three. I had studied and played reggae for years when I saw that and Stewart Copeland redefined my understanding of reggae with a few words ("It's all about the 3"). He explains the feel they go for while sitting at his kit and playing examples. Sting has a really insightful interview about his songwriting process ("Message in a Bottle") and Andy Summers talks about effects. Very cool little documentary. Also there are a bunch of cheesy videos on there (mostly only recommended for the unintentional comedy).

ka mai, how far along will your wife be at the time? My wife and I are trying for our first child and we've talked a lot about when during pregnancy she'd still be up for going. Just curious about your situation.

I'm not going to put their artistic credit versus Radiohead, but they are probably a bigger signing.
This is exactly what I'm afraid of. None of us know the nitty gritties of artist signing deals, but considering a radiohead ticket costs 35$ and a Police one is gonna be 50-275$, I don't want to think about the sacrifices Superfly made to book the group.

Are you insinuating that Superfly no loner has "its finger on the musical pulse.... apprently moreso than you"?
No. In the future, please refrain from being so condescending.
Just as soon as you stop whining. These guys bust their asses every year so we can all have a somewhat affordable blast. From the looks of it they really believe in Bonnaroo, just as much if not more than we do.
My whole point is music is half of the Bonnaroo experience. Compaining about 1/150th of the bands performing there is petty. Im positive every band on everyones Bonnaroo wish list wont be there. We will all experience let downs. But they're not let downs at all. Because....... Well, its f*cking BONNAROO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!
Would it be excessive to drive to Vancouver to see the first Police show of the tour, come back to Seattle to catch the second show, and then make the annual pilgrimage to Manchester to catch the Police for a third time?
It seems like every year we have this discussion as far as how acts will change the make up of the crowd, so do you think the Police will draw more middle age yuppies than in past years?

Good article. The police are 3 musicians, and they arent reuniting to put on a gimmicky show and make a quick buck. I think we're gonna see something special saturday night.
