If this tour wasnt about money then please anyone try and explain the price of the tickets.
Like I said it doesnt mean that they wont kick @ss but to try and fool yourself into believing that this has nothing to do with money is insane. Just like you said Sting made an album focused on the lute. That was about music and not money. He couldve kept doing that stuff forever.
I know a guitarist here in SC that BB King refferred to as one of the greatest living jazz guitarists. You know what he hasnt toured anywhere. He plays free shows and just about nothing but free shows. Hold student showcases for free where his students range in age from 10-60+. That is about music and not money. He could go and do just about anything he wants. But chooses to just enjoy music. If you charge money its about the money and if you charge crazy sums of money then it is for sure about the money.
I think Sting charged money for his Lute CD.
And I don't think anyone has said that it had nothing to do with money. My own personal point was that certainly money was a factor, but that a tour was certainly an artistic decision given their history (of difficult personalities and touring).
Thankfully, they're giving something like 25% to WATERAID per ticket. It's about the money, it's about the want to tour. It can actually be about more than one thing, shockingly.
Sting's son's band, Fiction Plane is opening for them for the entire North American leg of the tour. While I am sure they wouldn't be the pre headliner, does anyone think they'll play a set on Saturday at Bonnaroo as well? Anyone know if they are any good?
I think Fiction Plane is actually surprisingly decent. Not amazing, but they do some interesting things. You have to like the Brit/Euro rock thing a bit (the late 80's/90's brit rock thing, not Franz or anything).
According to former Police/Sting manager Miles Copeland (who said he is privy to reunion talks), that group is a bit less high-minded about its motivations. "It was the 30th anniversary [of the release of the Police's first single] and that was a good opportunity to be reflective about it," said Copeland, brother of Police drummer Stewart Copeland. "That's really the only reason. If it had been the 29th anniversary, it wouldn't be happening. The record company's always thinking of a hook to reinvigorate the public's awareness of the band, and the anniversary was as good a reason as any. So it's not just about the money: From an aesthetic standpoint, it's in everyone's ego to want to see your art carry on and see it be vibrant and reach a new generation."

Not my favorite band, however Stuart Copeland is my favorite drummer by far. And besides that, even if it isn't your music, those guys WILL put on a great show. All in all, I'm excited for that show.

yes! police @ rooo!
The group was mum on details about a potential tour set list or new studio recordings, but Sting acknowledged they would not play any of his solo material. "We're going to play songs we'll never play before," - sounds good!

Geez, I leave this morning that there are three posts in this thread. I come home and it's grown to 9 pages. Anyone else out there *not* work all day with or near a computer and have this same problem?
All banter aside, I'm still excited about this. I share the sentiment that, while they aren't a favorite band of mine, I know they'll put on an explosive, memorable show. For those who don't care for The Police, perhaps you can at least take solace in the fact that this really is HUGE.
Oh, sorry, I meant HUGE.
p.s. Since Bonnaroo has a history of grabbing the opening acts of their headliners, I do think we can expect Fiction Plane to be on the lineup. For what it's worth.
i think the idea of having the arguably biggest headliner named "The Police" may give off a bad vibe. maybe they will change their name to "The Civilians" or something to that affect.
I can't wait to hear my favorite "Bring on the Night" as night falls on the big stage. I think some of the younger posters will be surprised of how good of a guitar player Andy Summers is. I got their first album as a free promo in' 78... and there has been nothing that compares to that sound since.

AHHHHHH I love Bring on the Night!!!
I was listening to Synchronicity last night in anticipation of this announcement... dreaming of "Tea in the Sahara" on that stage...Oh my god. I can't wait.

let me get the "imo" part out of the way so i don't offend anyone, when i first heard the rumors about the police at bonnaroo i thought it may be a good thing, i actually downloaded their greatest hits cd, and well, i don't really know anymore, theres only a few songs i can really stand listening to, but i even get tired of them so quickly, the way i see it, its a long awaited reunion, they're a legendary band, they might bring in people who may generally go to coachella, and bonnaroo will hike up the prices to make more money, but i ask myself, is bonnaroo selling out? while bonnaroo has to change simply cause of the times, and the festival scene is becoming too much of a competition and business, the police will be the weakest and worst headliner that bonnaroo has ever had, and i wish they could have something else going on at the same time, maybe string cheese could play with keller saturday night like 8-12 or longer, that won't happen but would be awesome, cause if i'm at bonnaroo i probably won't see the police, maybe like 10 minutes, i don't think i could take any more than that, and i'm waiting for the rest of the lineup to come out, i plan on going cause it feels like a second home and just being there makes me happier than anything, and although langerado, wakarusa, and 10,0000 lakes have very strong and better lineups, imo, i probably won't go to those simply because of the location, well the wait is almost over, i hope bonnaroo takes us back to its roots, give me some panic or cheese, bobby or phil, dave, trey, mule or warren, keller, mmj, or anyone else that played from 2002-2005, which, imo, were the best bonnaroo years...

I think it depends on who you ask, as to whether or not Bonnaroo is selling out.
Here's my take on it, for what it's worth.
I am not a big jamband person. Never have been. This will be my third Bonnaroo, and I liked last year's lineup much better than the year before. Bonnaroo is probably the biggest festival in the US, no? Because of that, they need to bring in bigger acts. There are so many other festivals in the US, smaller festivals, that can bring in the jambands that you, and many of the Roo fans, like.
But what about people who don't like jambands? Do we not have a right to enjoy a festival setting too? And I don't mean some one-day thing like Lollapalooza. I mean something like Bonnaroo. I just don't understand why people want to see the same five bands over and over again. People get mad when Bonnaroo doesn't bring String Cheese, or Keller Williams, or what have you. I understand their importance to the festival scene, but they just don't draw the crowds that Bonnaroo needs in order to profit. It's that simple. You will not sell 80,000 tickets with headliners that don't appeal to a mainstream audience. Call it selling out, or call it whatever you want, but that's the fact. Especially now that Bonnaroo has bought the farm...(pun not intended) they need to bring in acts to pay the expenses of running the place.
That also brings up the fact that AC and Fly will probably start holding smaller festivals at other times of the year- there has been a rumor about a Widespread Panic festival on the land at another time during the late summer or fall. Those will probably be the festivals that will draw more of the jamband crowds...but at this point, if Bonnaroo "goes back to their roots" they will inevitably drop their ticket sales and dry up, which they can't afford to do, especially now that they've bought the land.
That's a good point. Anybody can (and everybody does) put out a heavily jamband-laden lineup. Bonnaroo needs to stay fresh, exciting, and relevant to maintain a max-capacity event. IT's no different than them getting Tom Petty last year. Petty and Radiohead were the big tours of the summer, and Roo got them both. This year it's The Police. Them getting The Police for sure isn't selling out. The Police are a band that is on the tip of everyone's tongue right now. Their drummer has played the Roo, and as a band, they are the biggest act touring this summer. IT's a natural fit, and definitely THE BAND they needed to get this summer after having Radiohead last year.
In order to stay relevant and fresh, we'll continue to see this type of direction from AC and Superfly. They are going to need to get one big name act every year, b/c anybody can get Panic and Cheese to headline, and everybody does.
The Police aren't really somebody I'm crazy about seeing, but I definitely think they're a really cool headliner, especially when compared to somebody like WSP or DMB (no offense, just not my types of music. But I'm starting to appreciate me some jam ). But I'm excited that I'll get to see a reunion like this.

Has anyone heard of a Fri. night headliner Van Halen with David Lee Roth? that would be historic for both the Police and Van Halen reunion with David Lee !!
No, no, no. That's a terrible idea. That's the precise idea that would make me and many others want to find boycott Bonnaroo. Sorry, I just have to give my two cents on that one. I just cannot stand that band.
The Police will be a great show! I for one love how Superfly/AC keep Bonnaroo fresh.and keeps progressing as a festival. You jamband fans (me included) will get some great jambands again this year, just maybe not all of the 4 or 5 you hear about over and over and over.
Well I can say that I'm pretty happy with the announcement. I'm wondering if people giving this announcement two thumbs up are in their late 20's or 30's? I'm going to be 37 this year and I can dig back in my brain to remember Police videos on MTV. Especially the one with a million candles (Wrapped around your finger?) . That was high tech then!! You will three guys on a stage in June with a unimaginable amount of musical talent. Last time I saw them was around 83-84 after Synchronicity came out. I still had the tour t-shirt a couple of years ago!!
I'm sorry, from a purely objective standpoint, the idea that The Police are more of a Coachella band than a Bonnaroo band is absolutely hilarious and a bit out of touch. The Police...the group that, next to Bob Marley, is the biggest pop reggae act of all time, a group full of members who went off to experiment in all aspects of world music after the band split up, the same group whose member has played Bonnaroo in a supergroup with Trey and Les...Yeah, that group is going to be the group that plays Coachella...
Give me a break. The stereotypical Coachella hipster is too school to rock The Police on his cd player which to me is sad. Said Coachella attendee has seen too many Puff Daddy Every Breath You Take remixes and too many Sting car ads to think the Police are a valid act. But the truth of it is this: the Police are one of the most unlikely major bands in pop history. They combined three genres that don't normally make a band massive (ska, punk, reggae), and they parlayed it into a rare act that could both rock out and bring it down to a soft fm level.
To me, that's what a Bonnaroo headliner is about. Coachella on the other hand seems geared more towards reuniting acts most people only pretend to really care about and feature artists who are more "the next big thing" than the ACTUAL thing. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to catch Coachella. But the criteria for a band to headline Coachella and a band to headline Bonnaroo are completely different. The Police have the history, the style and the song catalog to hold down the 2-3 hour headlining slot that Bonnaroo requires. Honestly, I don't see any of the Coachella headliners being capable of that.
