I don't think any new album is proabably too realistic, as much as I want to believe it.
This is about a tour. Hence the straightforward website: The Police Tour.com.
Will they get cash? Sure they will.
Would they get even more cash with an album to sell? You bet.
But is this ONLY for cash? Goodness no-- there was a time (okay there was like twenty years) where these guys couldn't be in the same room with eachother. As soon as LAST YEAR they were offered more than 5 million dollars for a single performance. But they've chosen to do this, they've chosen to be careful. There are certainly artistic reasons involved here, although I know not exclusively. Stew and Andy could have cashed in way more than they have in the interim if all they wanted was money.

Poop I would have to say no.
Like many bands I think they wouldve quietly worked on an album then made their comeback.
That doesnt mean they wont kick @ss it just means that $$$ is the driving force behind it.
well, thats just your opinion, and while i ahve no hard feelings toward you and respect your opinion mine happens to be the opposite
Agreed, i mean one of the guys played with oysterhead, and the other made an album based around the lute, which actually has some good songs. Neither of those are big money projects, i think these guys are more musicians then businessmen at this point.
do you think bonnaroo.com was sorta forced to put up the fact about the police headlining because of the other announcements or did they have that planned all along?
and i can't wait to see them live! i hope they play invisible sun
They seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves thusfar, and while there will be piles of cash, I have to believe there are other reasons for this reunion. As has been said, they've had opportunities to cash in throughout the past 23 years and haven't. This is their 30th anniversary, they've decided to tour, and they are seemingly being cautious and making this work.

I'm guessing they just threw that up there since there was no sense holding off anymore.
I'm sure they were forced too. The same thing happened last year when Austin City Limits had their lineup leaked, they had it out late the same night.
Here's the next question - how long do you think they'll play at Bonnaroo? Headliners have up to 3.5 hours...I'm guessing 2 hours or 2.5, they're supposedly rehearsing 30 songs so they definitely have the material ready for the full two and a half.
One of my greatest concert memories was seeing the Police headline the US Festival in 1982 (Which also featured "Breakfast with the Dead") . There was a full moon out and they did a killer version of "Walking on the Moon". I doubt there are many people here who have actually ever seen them play live, but you won't be disappointed. And in the 'Roo atmosphere? Its gonna be epic!
And although it may seem like The Police are a "commercial" band to many because they are now so famous, When Outlandos was released it sounded like nothing that came before.
"...Drummer Stewart Copeland joked that they are doing "the jam band thing" and working without a setlist today. The band kicked into "Voices Inside My Head," which bled into "When The World Is Running Down.""
Sting's son's band, Fiction Plane is opening for them for the entire North American leg of the tour. While I am sure they wouldn't be the pre headliner, does anyone think they'll play a set on Saturday at Bonnaroo as well? Anyone know if they are any good?

That was actually pretty cool, the parts that i saw they were talking in the middle of the song about it there was a singalong, then they asked the crowd what song they should finish up with. I think a lot of people are going to be suprised by them, much like radiohead last year. And bonnaroo obviously has their finger on the pulse, because i dont think there is a bigger signing right now then the police. I think pavement would be good leading up to the police, not the pixies though. How bout a reggae act opening, like the wailers or something like that.
Has anyone heard of a Fri. night headliner Van Halen with David Lee Roth? that would be historic for both the Police and Van Halen reunion with David Lee !!
If this tour wasnt about money then please anyone try and explain the price of the tickets.
Like I said it doesnt mean that they wont kick @ss but to try and fool yourself into believing that this has nothing to do with money is insane. Just like you said Sting made an album focused on the lute. That was about music and not money. He couldve kept doing that stuff forever.
I know a guitarist here in SC that BB King refferred to as one of the greatest living jazz guitarists. You know what he hasnt toured anywhere. He plays free shows and just about nothing but free shows. Hold student showcases for free where his students range in age from 10-60+. That is about music and not money. He could go and do just about anything he wants. But chooses to just enjoy music. If you charge money its about the money and if you charge crazy sums of money then it is for sure about the money.
Someone said Incubus as the pre-headliner. It makes sense, although I don't know if Bonnaroo's going to go there with the lineup. It'll be someone big...how 'bout Ben Harper? Stylistically it doesn't totally match up, which is good, but there are enough similar elements that I think people would be plenty happy with it. Last year it was Oysterhead, Beck, and moe. so I think BH&TIC would fit the spot beautifully. I'd camp out for a long time if those two were back to back.
edit: And Jason, if it's all about the music, how about everyone tours for free? Nobody will need to make money, we'll just all travel and see shows for free, and everyone can put out obscure albums with strange instruments. I mean, come on man, get some perspective. Money drives the world, it's obvious that it has SOME impact, but it's also obvious they're doing this tour for much more than money. Why else would Sting have his son's band open for them? They could have filled that spot with someone big (bigger than U2's openers - Killers/BB King/Kanye West/Pearl Jam.)
I'd pass on Incubus too. And I also hope VH was a joke (I think it was). Although I am going to go see Van Halen with one of my buddies this summer if they aren't too expensive and come near here because it is his favorite band. I think it might be fun. But at Bonnaroo? I would certainly hope not.

Toots! That would be the shit! Incubus is a joke. Van Halen is a novelty act. And I feel like the language on the Police post at Bonnaroo.com, "The Police will be headlining..." means no split headliner....
