OK. im sure there are drummers that can physically play the beats and everything that carey can do but its not like they can replace him. For example, i can play hendrix songs on guitar. it doesnt mean i can replace him.

i basicly said that, just cuz they can doesnt mean they will or they should.
i was just saying he really isnt as good as everyone is making him out to be. he COULD be replaced, thats all im saying. its not like he's the hendrix of drums. hes the hendrix of tool drummers.
no of course not, i don't think anyone's suggesting that thats possible. just having some fun trying to figure out who's got enough chops to handle the song structures, talent to be able to add their own style to the songs without taking the focus off the rest of the band, and ability to improvise when necessary.
by the way, thanks hoodoooperator. wouldn't he be a great substitution?
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

Bittner's phenomenal...he would suit me, i would also take Brann Dailor from Mastodon, that guy is sick.
you think? on a technical and improvisational level of course, not a question. but does copeland really have the soul it takes to play Tool's style of metal? he doesn't strike me as the type to understand their type of metal...

theres more to drumming then just speed and technique. carey has an amazing ability to throw insane time signatures over an already strange time. he plays where he needs to play and is only over the top when he needs to be. (ticks and leeches). listen to the beat in the slow part of lateralus about 3/4ths the way through. maynard and adam are in 4/4 justin plays the into bit, and danny comes in with this beautiful drum line. no one would have thought of playing that.

That'd be the interesting part. ;D I think he could handle it though, think Oysterhead.
Someone was suggesting the idea of a second drummer, and I was actually thinking that, as well. I would go more with someone closer to the band, rather than someone who would be the drummer just because they're insanely good.
Think more along the lines of Josh Freese or Brad Wilk helping out. I would see that as being more likely.

Just checked this thread.... Are we sure TOOL is out? Would TOOL really headline Bonnaroo with a substitute drummer? I just think they would want to make a statement and reach out to a different demographic. There was talk of a DVD and now what? I just can't see them headlining without a Carey recovery....
Before Thanksgiving my boss fell off a ladder. His elbow came completely out of place, ripped 4 tendons and he chipped bones in 3 places. He was sent to the Mayo Clinic, had months of physical therapy and is back 100% and playing hockey weekly. It is possible that between now and June all will be well and Tool will be at Roo.
I was also going to say, if Tool were to cancel, I would think that AC/Fly should take into consideration the fact that some people may want their money refunded. I know they say no refunds, but on a headliner, and especially one like Tool, I could see at least a few hundred people going for them alone...it seems like it would be only fair for the promoters to offer something like that...if it comes to it...which I hope it doesn't.

Bringing in Brad Wilk as a secondary drummer would lend itself to some interesting possibilities given the presence of Tom Morello.
Honestly, given the set up of Tool's live show, I don't think a second drummer would be distracting. Their focus is the music and the visuals from what I've gathered.

Especially if it's a drummer who is very familiar with the band and their music. That's why it doesn't really matter how "good" the drummer is...to play Tool, you have to know them.
I could definitely see it being either of those two.

Yes. Mark my words, Tool will be there. I just don't see them canceling their biggest show scheduled so far. They only postponed their tour up until the end of April/beginning of May. They'll be there kids, don't sweat it.

Wow... I see a lot of people vastly underrating the effect Carey has on the band. He may be the main attraction for the band. I love what the other guys bring, but Carey may be the best rock drummer on earth. You can't replace him. You can't bring in a 2nd guy to 'help out'.
This is like Zeppelin taking the stage with a replacement for Jimmy Page or Radiohead going ahead with a show minus Thom Yorke.
Seriously... he is THAT important. The chemistry that these gusy have with each other cannot be replaced and there is NO WAY that Tool would use a replacement anyway. I've been following the band long enough to know that.
Here is to Carey making a full recovery within the next month or so.

This brings up a very good point. Someone had said six months of recovery time...but we have to take into consideration the fact that Danny Carey is a pretty strong guy. His arms are very strong because of his profession. I think that lends itself to a speedy recovery, as long as he doesn't try to do too much too soon.

as long as carey can heal by then, they will be there. i dont think brad wilk could pull off tool songs. i dont even know of a rage song thats not in 4/4. but really, they would choose not to play before choosing a replacement drummer.
