i say this because im going to bonnaroo to see new music, new artists and get interested in things i havent seen/heard before. the idea of zeppelin/metallica just ruins that whole plan because i know zep, i know metallica. i want new new new
I can understand this, but at the two Bonnaroos I've been to, I've gained appreciation for a lot of bands I'd never heard of before, none of them the headliners. With 80 bands, there's plenty of time for discovery. The headliners, for me, are a time for the familiar. For catching up with bands I've loved for years.
When Metallica first started playing, no major labels would pick them up, no radio stations would play their music. They relied on an underground network of fans that illegally distributed copies of there tapes until they got popular enough to be requested on radio stations. When they sued napster and their fans over the same thing that made them popular, i was left feeling quite salty about them. I don't think i'd want them at bonnaroo because of that...
Even though I grew up listening to metallica, and i really love a lot of their music.

What they sued napster for has nothing to do with fans illegally distributing their records.
Please, everyone, before you hate Metallica for the napster business, do some research, instead of going by the headlines in the media.
As for more evidence...I have a friend who works for A.C. Entertainment (one of the companies that puts on Bonnaroo for those of you who don't know), and she informed me 2 days ago that Metallica is playing. I guess she could be wrong, but I have a feeling she's not.
Honestly, Metallica is still really good at performing live. I saw them in 2000 as well as in 2003, and they were incredible both times. I know a lot of you probably think they just play a bunch of new stuff, but they honestly hardly play any of that. In 2003, they played 2 songs from St. Anger (which had just come out...I wouldn't expect them to play more than 1 song from it at Bonnaroo), 1 song from Reload (Fuel), and 0 songs from Load. Everything else was older (Blackened, Battery, One, No Remorse, other suck rockin' tunes), and it all sounded great.
I agree that Bonnaroo isn't necessarily the right place for Metallica, but I love Bonnaroo, and I love Metallica, so what the hell.

Yeah it does, otherwise they wouldn't have had any right to sue. I've read plenty of interviews with lars during that time, and my opinion has research behind it.

I'm afraid the headliners aren't going to be unknown bands....
i dont mean unknown bands. im saying if radiohead headlined, that would be someone knew for me. i only got into radiohead after buying in rainbows. pearl jam would also be a new experience for me, i do not know very much of their music. similar with mmj, flaming lips etc etc the list goes on of bands that arent really new or unknown but they are are to me. i want to see some of these great bands in their prime or close to it, i dont feel metallica or zep can provide that kind of experience for me.
at this point im expecting metallica to be one of the headliners announced, just because there has been too much talk to not. however im not sure why they would be there simply based on the very mixed responses to them on here and the bonnaroo.com boards. we know "they" are watching both and i dont understand why they would insist on booking a headliner that is has been made very clear not everyone wants to be there at all, nevermind headlining

It has nothing to do with their released catalog of albums. More or less, Metallica was defending their not-yet-released, unmastered and unfinished cuts which had made their way to Napster before what would eventually become St. Anger was released. Thats why they were suing. Not because someone wanted to download "Enter Sandman".

And really all they did was get people banned from napster i believe. Superfly is still gonna make bank on bonnaroo, even if this board doesn't like Metallica. Its a simple fact they have a huge fanbase, and will draw enough people to the farm to make up for the distaste here and felt by anyone else. No, Metallica fans who hate hippies will not pay 250$ to see them at bonnaroo when they can see them for 50 in their town, its foolish thinking that Metallica would bring a bunch of metalheads to the fest. People are being pretty unreasonable in their dislike for Metallica.

Incorrect, it was I Disappear leaking to Naoster that angered Metallica, not St Anger.

I worry if Metallica plays Roo it could spark riots like the Modern Woodstock...
When Metallica came out to play the crowd went nuts and rioted and burned the place down... and that worries me...
Not that I think the Bonnaroo crowd would be capable of a riot of that magnitude... Rooers are just to peaceful to riot... but if it attracts alot of Metallica type crowd that could spell trouble!

This is fundamentally untrue. It will bring metalheads to the fest because they are a metal band, just as Radiohead brought more indie kids to 06.
I mean, just from Inforoo alone, I can tell you that there are twice as many metal fans on the boards now than there were this time last year based in large part on that Metallica/Zeppelin rumor floating around in December. If AC/Superfly didn't want to bring metalheads to the fest, they wouldn't book THE metal band.
I'm not a fan of Metallica, but I don't think they'd ruin the fest because their fans would riot. Not unless they booked a bunch of metal bands, forced everyone to buy their food in Centeroo and charged $10 for bottled water. But I do think they might be the least attended festival headliner...

Metallica didnt play that woodstock, they played at the 94 one. that was Limp Bizkit and RHCP who played during the riots.

Dudezer, i agree with will bring "metalheads", but not the hardcore ones who hate hippies and and all things good. ;D It seems people are worried that those people would come. Also, Radiohead was basically a one off show, I believe Metallica is announcing a big tour soon in support of their new album. I think the metalheads who come to bonnaroo this year will be similar to the ones who came last year for Tool.

^^Exactly. I think you're more likely to run into annoying nerdier than thou metalheads than you will violent ones.
Haha, true that, i totally forgot that most of the metalheads i know are huge nerds. Karma for that. Seriously people, Danzig isn't bringing his posse to roo or anything. ;D

Metallica did play Woodstock 99' but I was wrong about the riots... The riots started with Limp Bizkit and then continued on to the Red Hot Chili Peppers... My bad guys forgive my ignorance...
Metallica only brings trouble I saw Metallica when i was 13 in Bmore and a dude died at their show Metallica blew up Woodstock 99 which was a total disaster When Metallica played in Russia during the black albumn tour riots started Riots started due to Metallica and GnR in Canada
Metallica's music promotes anger and rage.... their fans are not bonnaroo people Metallica has no place at Roo IMHO... mind you I am a fan of Metallica's music
I'm seriously thinking of starting a petition against Metallica at Bonnaroo. The Cure or R.E.M. would have been much better, much more fun, and most importantly, much SAFER than Metallica. I also think it's unfair of the promoters. Yes, you could say it's unfair that they've gone outside the jam-band realm. But they've booked quality bands. Metallica hasn't been relevant for what, 20 years?
But, like other people on here, I am most concerned about the Metallica fans. I've seen live footage of their concert. It's violent. Bonnaroo is not a violent festival. I have no problem with Mastodon. At least they're critically acclaimed and like to have fun. Really though, I think we should all do a walkout on Metallica. Everyone show up, and as soon as they come on stage, everyone leave
I said it on another thread, but you seem to be spreading this anti-Metallica everywhere. Metallica fans are more likely to be turned off by the other 90% of the lineup AND the festival atmosphere rather than Bonnaroo goers being turned off by ONE band. It's not like the farms going to be filled with mosh pits this year. Enough with the negativity, some people actually enjoy Metallica without the mosh pits. Ride the Lightning is an amazing album.
Like i said I fu*cking love metallica's music (their older stuff anyway) I still would rather have WSP come back for another year (and I hate WSP) because it fits the vibe more I could name dozens of other artists id rather see healine (The Cure, REM, Bowie, Muse, Arcade Fire) without naming any repeat headliners from past roo's Metallica isnt my only beef though... WTF is Kanye doing (he's sucha prick) and his shows blows on top of that (could we at least get Snoop or jay Z, or Wu-Tang...?) This festy is becoming way too mainstream it fucking feels like lollapalooza
Metallica is just taking up one of our aweome headliner spaces... make room for someone better... I dont have anything against them... used to listen to em but they dont belong at Roo... course neither does Kanye west... Both good artists but just dont care to see them at roo... of course i had never seen a Tool concert and was a bit apprehensious about that but they ended up being sweet as anything...
I just smited three times for creating a "walkout on Metallica" thread. And people are telling me I need to accept diversity. Here's an idea, some people have DIVERSE OPINIONS. F*ck Metallica. I'll say it 'til I'm smited to oblivion. They don't belong at Bonnaroo and I think plenty of people agree
I agree with aruawhere though... i dont think people will not go to roo because of one artist and i def dont think it will draw in metallica fans... just not the kinda place i would envision hardcore metal fans to be haha
And if you want statistics, 62.3% of people who voted in the "yay or nay: Metallica" thread in the Blue Room, stated they didn't wanted Metallica there

I think its more of the sh*tty attitude you have rather than your opinion being stated that people are upset about. How old are you anyway, 12? There are plenty of people here who are stating "I'd rather not see Metallica" who aren't being smitted because they at least are taking the high road in saying "I'D rather not see them, but if other people want to and are happy about them being there, then thats great". But you're sitting there saying "BLAAAAAAAAH I HAAAAATE THEM AND NO ONE ELSE SHOULD WANT TO SEE THEM BAAAAAAAAAAH!" and its annoying and uncalled for.
