Do you realize how much the crowd was in it for the Rodrigo y Gabriela set when they played "One". The crowd went absolutely ape$hit and was singing the whole song. Also how many times has Les Claypool busted out Metallica. Pretty much at every show at some point. True they do not fit this imaginary thing called "vibe" but really how bad was it for Tool last year when they finally got on stage. I really think they want to fix their image and to do that in front of quite possibly the smartest musical crowd that they have played in front of in a long time, will bring it and blow it out of the water.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
Alright, I'm sorry about being negative. All the "indie" bands (I hate using that word) really didn't bring in that many hipsters. And the ones I did see I felt bad for because they were wearing jeans in 90 degree weather (bonnaroo rule #5: wear appropriate clothes, or no clothes at all ). So Metallica really shouldn't bring in too many knuckleheads. And I'm sorry for classifying all Metallica fans as knuckleheads. I realize how that would be offensive as in no way would want to be called "emo" or "hipster" because I like Death Cab. I actually have several friends who enjoy Metallica. Personally, they're not for me. I'll probably check them out, but won't stay long. And mosh pits are fine as long as they don't get too violent. They can be fun if it's just people having a good time and not punching the living daylights out of each other. That said, I hope Metallica fans are happy (no sarcasm). Enjoy the show and maybe I'll see in you in the pit (actually a good thing to know that the pit will more than likely be there again).

Glad to see you come around to the rational side!
Personally, I won't even be attending because I'm not impressed with the lineup, but I very much hope that everyone has a great time regardless of who is there or what type of music they play! Festivals like this are about the music and bringing different types of people together over that common theme. Just be sure to love and respect each other and learn to be open to different people and their minds. You just might learn something.
Fuck metallica a million times over. They are equally as lame as jack johnson, just not as well adjusted. I have been lucky enough to attend every bonnaroo so far but i don't think i can justify giving a dime of my money to metallica. I can only condone stealing from them. And no Zeppelin. WTF. Tease tease tease oh here is a dyke cover band ha ha. i'm piissed off.

Hope i haven't posted this in here before. And like i said on meebo, maybe if you guys didn't flip over metallica covers at roo they wouldn't be playing this year. ;D

if i end up going to roo, will be staking my late night spot right after the last band plays before metallica. i might do the same for pearl jam too as I saw them last year at lolla and I was disappointed in their set. anyways, i hope metallica pulls out of the fest for some reason! hopefully they have the comedy tent going with Janeane Garofalo while Metallica is playing so I can catch her without missing any of the bands I really want to see.

Seriously, the worst news on the lineup. I am not looking forward to having to listen to Metallica come across the silence while waiting for the late night. I'll just have a really great spot for what could turn out to be an amazing night jam packed with insane possibilities!

Karma for coming around. Honestly, I have a bunch of what you call "knuckleheads" as friends, and Metallica or no Metallica they wouldn't be caught dead at 'Roo. Besides, those guys have probably disowned Metallica after St. Anger.
I only registered here to give the perspective from the other side. Im a HUGE Metallica fan, and I dont want Metallica playing Bonnaroo just as much as alot of you. Metallica hasn't played a show in the US since 2004, and with all the buildup and excitement surrounding the announcement of a US date, we find out its Bonnaroo. I understand people have a variety of music taste, but this seems like a total mismatch. It seems Bonnaroo carved a niche as a festival that had an identity, now it seems like it has none. For many Metallica fans, the only reason that they would go to Bonnaroo would be to see Metallica, and with travel costs along with the $200+ tickets, it just isnt worth it. I totally understand people not wanting Metallica at Bonnaroo, much the same that we wouldnt want Widespread Panic at Ozzfest. I am not bashing Bonnaroo or the music acts that you WANT to see at Bonnaroo, to each his own, enjoy music - thats what its all about. But I just think that this is a rather odd combination.

I didn't go last year largely because of Tool (and money) and I won't go this year if Metallica is on the bill. I just have too many fears of what they will do to the crowd. It's not a good vibe. Not that everyone gets ideal neighbors at their campsite at Roo, but I wouldn't want to be next door to a group of drunken violent Metallica fans who would most likely drink at their campsite for most of the weekend except when Metallica is on stage. Radiohead (as much as I love them) brought a certain crowd and a lot of fence jumpers. I was afraid of what Tool would have brought and I'm afraid of what Metallica would bring.
It just doesn't make sense for Bonnaroo. Although, I must admit that I do feel somewhat regretful of skipping last year. However, at the time it made sense and I really didn't have the money.
Was trying to think of how to put you at ease about the metallica thing (cant help with the money unfortunately)... then it came to me, I'll tell the truth.
Last year was my first bonnaroo and ill freely admit that i only heard of it because Tool was playing there (my favorite band at the time). I saw some other decent acts on the bill and decided to come.
I was not violent (in fact the idea of violence at roo scares me). I did not consume large quantities of beer and run around belligerently. In fact I had a FANTASTIC time meeting great people and turning myself on to acts that I would have never even heard of before. And now i am hooked on Bonnaroo no matter who is headlining, just because of the other people there (I trust you guys).
So think of it like this, bonnaroo will be enlightening some metallica fans this year.
(but maybe your point is that i am a special case)
honestly, do you really think that 40000 alcoholicca fans are suddenly going to decide that travelling to bonnaroo, to camp, endure the weather, and then decide to be angry and belligerant to everyone who isnt there just to see them?
it hasnt happened before with other bands, and it wont happen this time.
the person that decides to travel to a multi-day camping festival in the middle of nowhere is, more than likely, someone open to experiencing new music.
if you have such a fear of them at the roo take it up with the city. I was at woodstock 99 and lola when they played. (and killed both shows) that is why I have told the city my 2 cents.
Metallica only brings trouble I saw Metallica when i was 13 in Bmore and a dude died at their show Metallica blew up Woodstock 99 which was a total disaster When Metallica played in Russia during the black albumn tour riots started Riots started due to Metallica and GnR in Canada
Metallica's music promotes anger and rage.... their fans are not bonnaroo people Metallica has no place at Roo IMHO... mind you I am a fan of Metallica's music
I assume you're referring to Summer Sanitarium. I was at that show. Not to sound callous but the man died because he fell to death. I was pretty close up during Metallica, and not only was there no moshing, there was a pretty cool camaraderie going on. Everyone was just rocking out to the music.
It's important to look at the context of the events you have listed. The Woodstock riot was inspired by poor planning, inflated prices, and general discontent.
I don't need to go into the serious socio-political environment of the USSR during the time of Metallica's tour.
The GnR riot happened because James Hetfield got burned and couldn't finish and Axl refused to go on.
I'm not going to say that music doesn't inspire emotion in people. Everyone on this board is here because of the profound connection music has on their life. But to blame Metallica for violence takes personal responsibility out of the equation. Also, the narrow minded categorization of Metallica fans as drunken brawlers is just as bad as the stoner hippie stereotype. I met some great people at the Metallica concert. I've met many great people at Bonnaroo. It's an amazing festival that has such a personal affect on people, they want to hold on to it as their own. The fact is, this is an event for everybody, and the more people we get to the farm from as many diverse backgrounds, the better off we and Bonnaroo will be.

My first thought when I saw Metallica on the lineup was oh fuck that sucks. I saw them in '89 on the And Justice For All tour. I was never a huge fan and only went because I had the car and my friends paid for the tickets since I drove. Despite my misgivings I was impressed, they put on a really tight show and the crowd vibe wasn't hostile or anything.
Since then I haven't like much of what they've put out for albums. Today I set the I-pod on Ride the Lightning and was taken back to that concert. IF they can put on a show like they used to it will be pretty good in my opinion. It might not be the classic Bonnaroo vibe BUT it may just work out.
Having said all the I thing James Hetfield is a prick and am tempted to bring a banner that says F U James.
