I see lots of people getting definitions mixed up when it comes to "headliners" at Bonnaroo.
Bonnaroo has THREE headliners every year. These are the bands that play on the main stage while no one else is playing . These sets are generally between 8pm and midnight. They are also ALWAYS the first three bands listed on the bill. Pre-headliner is NOT headliner.
Therefore, Pearl Jam, Metallica and Jack Johnson are the headliners. Kanye West is NOT a headliner. Phil and Friends is NOT a headliner. Chris Rock is NOT a headliner. Neither are the Robert Plant and Allison Krause or ANYONE listed below the first three.

That's mostly correct, except people have been talking for quite awhile about the possibility of Thursday night getting its own headliner. If that did happen this year, that would presumably be Kanye.
"I want you to notice When I'm not around You're so fücking special I wish I was special But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here" -Radiohead
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin

Their has never been evidence nor hints that Thursday will have a "headliner". It is pure Interweb speculation.
The first three listed are NOT always the headliners. In 2004 Bob Dylan was listed ahead of Trey and I believe last year White Stripes were listed ahead of Panic.
Kanye will hopefully be the first thursday night headliner, hopefully they can push him to like.. 9 or so and open the main stage so his glow in the dark show can rock
in '06, when the initial lineup was released, Beck was listed ahead of Phil Lesh and Friends, yet Phil closed out the festival on Sunday. Just letting you know.

Excellent point. I didn't realize Trey got the headlining spot that year. I assumed it was Dylan. Did he only get 90 minutes? Which night?

Panic was listed 3rd, White Stripes were 4th.
Jack Johnson's website says he'll be headlining Sunday night. If he's not playing the unopposed slot to close it out, then someone needs to explain to him/his webmaster/ his publicist what a headliner truly is.
I've heard they don't use the stages for anything but the VIP party Thursday night so as not to annoy the good people of Manchester on a work/school night. (Of course, most folks consider Sunday a work/school night, too). To me, the bigger questions are 1) whether Kanye will be playing late night on Friday or if it'll be Saturday and 2) if he'll be splitting the slot with Lupe Fiasco and/or Talib Kweli.
Thanks for starting this thread, jtr210ny. It was long overdue.

I don't know who the headliners are because bonnaroo.com has not announced them. when bonnaroo.com announces the schedule then we will know. the only way Jack Johnson headlines Sunday and Im not extremely pissed off is if Zeppelin plays an unannounced Saturday late night set at What Stage

i just don't know why numerous magazines/online articles/etc. called white stripes a headliner last year, clearly they didn't headline, but as for this year, metallica and pearl jam are 2 of the 3 obvious headliners, assuming jack is the 3rd, however, i wouldn't be shocked if jack is actually in the white stripes spot from last year, and maybe somebody bigger gets announced in the additions, i believe that the year neil young played he was a headliner and also an addition, i think its unlikely that neil will be there this year, i've heard he's doing limited shows this year, and i think zeppelin will not happen, but maybe dave gets announced or even clapton(moving pearl jam to sunday, clapton taking saturday), who knows...

I think Zeppelin will be there. Way too many things point to yes
Like that they aren't on the lineup, weren't added before tickets went on sale, that Jimmy Page said that Zeppelin won't tour until September, that Ashley Capps said there are no more headliners to be added and that "if Zeppelin was going to be there we would be shouting it from the rooftops," he said, adding that no one would be more surprised than him and his team if the band did perform. How can you possibly think Led Zeppelin going to play this year? It's going to happen next year, there is no use thinking up conspiracy theories this year. I guarantee you next year if Led Zeppelin does headline (and I think they will) they will be at the top of the lineup. Furthermore, why would a cover band be booked for a festival if the real band was playing?

DSO and Phil Lesh are both booked, cover band has nothing to do with it. I bet zep takes sunday and closes the fest =p

true that, quite unlikely, next year they most probably will, however it is possible, probable? NO, but many fishy things are going on here, didn't they say that the metallica rumors were bs? but after all they are there.

That's really not the same thing. Phil Lesh is a very small part of the Grateful Dead. That's far from a cover band being there along with the real band.

Except Metallica is on the lineup and Led Zeppelin isn't.
There is another definition for headliner. If your name is on the top line of performers(the head line) you are a headliner. That makes PJ, Metallica, JJ, Kanye, and Chris Rock headliners regardless of their scheduled appearance.
