So what does everyone think about things heating up between us and Russia again, it seems he's threatened Europe with Nuclear Oblivian if Bush doesn't back his Anti-Missle satellites off.
IMHO it is primarily blustering by a former superpower wanting some attention. Russia, with some justification, feels ignored on the world stage and knows its nuclear arsenal is a sure fire way to get attention. There is no way they would launch any nuclear strike on Europe.
That being said I think we are unnecessarily provoking them by placing these defenses in Eastern Europe and ignoring their call for input. The real danger is in the nuclear warheads and nuclear material laying around unguarded. We should resume buying that stuff before terrorists do, as we did under Clinton.
Putin is very popular because he makes the Russian people feel strong again after years of economic and political decline. Standing up to the "big bad Superpower" further bulsters the pride of the country and so helps him politically.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

If I've learned anything in college so far (and I'm not sure that I have) it's that international politics is essentially the same as high school. Everyone wants to be the cool guy and they have to show off to impress the others...it'll blow over soon enough because Russia doesn't have the money or the set up for any sort of war or arms race.
Putin is like a martial arts master, judo or something like that.
So we know he'd kick GW's ass in a fist fight.
Just my 2 cents.
;D
i think screech from saved by the bell could take bush in a fist fight. bush has a hard enough time not hurting himself with segues, bicycles, and pretzles.
russia just wants to run its mouth and try to appear to have some dignity left. but i also think that russia learned a lesson from the break up of the ussr. it broke up because they went broke waging the cold war against us and an unwinnable war in afghanistan. the way i see it its in their best interest to to escalate things with us. and to make sure we suffer as much pain as possible in the middle east. china, russia and iran are sitting back with smiles ont hier faces just waiting for our military to go broke and our economy to take a hit so they can be the world superpower. and bush seems more then willing to comply. but i wouldnt worry. bush looked into putins soul and saw that hes a good and honorable man. so we have nothing to worry about. and god talks to bush. im sure hed give him a heads up if something fishy was going on.

Russia has been pointing weapons at the world for decades now.....we need to move forward with the missle defense system. Who in the world ever thought Russia didn't have their weapons pointed at Europe? RUSSIA'S LAST GRAB TO BE RELEVANT just like France.....
All Putin did was threaten to aim nukes at European targets. Something in our treaty says that we won't aim at each other, but in reality it takes all of 30 seconds to put in the coordinates and aim a missile, so aiming them doesn't really mean anything. He's not looking to get into another arms race or some kind of new Cold War with the US and Europe, he's just trying to bolster support on the Russian homefront. The stronger his words are with the rest of the world (especially the US) the more his people are going to like him. Ruskies dig that kind of stuff.

Why should we move forward with a Missile defense system? That money could be much better spent researching medicine and reducing pollution.. How long will it be before everyone has a damn missile that can bypass the system anyway? Why start a new friggin cold war?
Russia may not have been in the best state since the fall of the USSR, but I don't think we want to piss them off too much..
Also, this gives the radicals in other countries who want to pump money into weapons research rather than pollution reduction and other things that every country should be spending more on an excuse to spend that money researching weapons to beat our missile system.
Can we PLEASE stop pointing weapons at eachother?

I just hope Dubya doesn't get "intelligence" that they have yellowcake or "gasp" Aluminum tubes, or else he'll attack them immediately. But wait they don't have any great oil reserves to speak of, and they would put up a fight, so there's no real threat of us declaring war on Russia anytime soon. Remember that bullies (in the this case Dubya\USA) rarely pick a fight with someone that can defend themselves.

IMHO, this is Putin attempt at nuclear blackmail, a la Kim Jong-il... "give us money, or we'll blow you to bits!" Basically, a weak attempt to boost a failing economy backed with a feeble threat of force.
As far as internal politics go, there's nothing like rattling your saber at an 'enemy of the state' (real or imagined) to draw the people's attention away from your own government's failings... ain't that right, G dubbya?

Perhaps this is my belief that in politics there's no such thing as coincidence. But this whole Russia threatening Nuclear action thing does come on the heel of Bush's, "If anything serious happens, I'll take control like the Emperor in Episode III."
Bush might be wanting to piss some superpowers off so he can Execute his version of Order 66.
But wait they don't have any great oil reserves to speak of
Russia has a LOT of oil. Estimates range between 50 and 200 billion bbl of proven reserves (depending on who you ask), but the average estimate is around 80 billion bbl. Compare this with Iraq's 112.5 billion bbl of proven reserves. In recent years (as technology and investment have made it easier to get the oil out of Siberia), Russia was second only to Saudi Arabia as world's leading oil exporter.
Ever hear of AIPAC? American Israeli Public Affairs Committee - another one of those "special interest" groups. Well, they pretty much own our entire government. They give loads of money to politicians they perceive to be pro-Israel and do everything in their power (which is a lot, don't be fooled) to make sure any dissenting voice on Israel is kept out of our government. In return, our politicians make sure to send ridiculous amounts of "aid" to Israel, and agree to act as their little lap dogs. All this bru-ha-ha in the ME, it's all about Israel, always has been. And the reason the extremist groups hate us so much - our support of Israel.
I don't think it's a zionist conspiracy. (I know you didn't say that.)
I do believe our government, as depressing as it is, has been bought. If anyone stands to argue on that aspect of it, watch this movie. And then argue.

gotcha since turkey is democratic we shouldn't support ISrael? ever been to a turkish prison? I wouldn't compare turkey with israel. turkey has a very long list of human rights violations hardly worth calling them democratic when they follow a strict religious law.....

Good comeback! Wow! That shut me up...
comparing turkeys human rights violations to the U.S. under BUSH isn't much of an argument either. Hard to learn much about turkey when u never leave the rough and tumble suburbs ...life is rough in the burbs...go to turkey commit a crime and then your tune will change.....Most of my business associates never leave the hotel room in turkey except for work......
