My 140# Dane Josie (who thinks she's a cat) loves the lasers. They're one of a few things that will get her off the couch.
One time, there are about 20 of us all at a party of my buddy's. Lotsa animals around-everything copasetic. Buddy breaks the laser out-Josie and the cats start going to town. Another buddy's lab gets super posessive about the little red dot being HIS and bites and attaches to my sweet Josie's face. Everyone at the party went from super amused to total shock. Things were in super slow motion(didn't help that it was midnight and we were all fat on some excellent brownies.) Must have been 3 or 4 seconds of engagement before I could act to separate them. At that point blood is squirting from my dear girl's eye. party over.
400 bucks and a split eyelid later, Josie was ok. Still loves lasers. We just play with them at home now, with noone but the cats around. Good thing Josie is docile and mellow or that lab would have been history.
She's confused by life(as am I). But we forget about it and give hugs and kisses.
All better !
Yeah-I thought twice about posting that story when everything was so light. But everything came out alright, there was a lesson learned, and that must have been at least 5 years ago. Ol' Josie's a trooper !
Pets are so great, they play, they get severely injured, they heal and go back to the same game.
my Ruckus loves tennis balls. Throw it anywhere, he'll dash for it. We threw it off the deck, he leaped over all the stairs to the yard to get the ball, retrieved it and raced back begging for more. Not until later did we realzie that dive tore both his back legs' ACLs....
A cone around his neck, a nice cast, carrying him up 13 stairs a couple times a day and putting an umbrella over him as he relieved himself for six weeks and we decided no more tennis balls. Nice big Jolly Ball with a a handle so it doesn't roll as fast or as straight.
He sorta heals from it (still has leg issues) and we let him out and he makes a bee-line for the toolshed, spends a good hour behind it snorting with glee. Comes out WITH A TENNIS BALL. It was under the shed, buried and we had never seen it before. He must have smelled it from inside the house.
Three years later, I can take him for a walk and he'll get frantic, drag me to the woods and under a rock, a log, water... he'll find some random ratty tennis ball. Maybe he missed his calling as a K-9 doggy.

Great imagery ! It is good to be cautious with those ACL's now. Little sucks more than to go through the surgery and restraint of healing, just to have it re-injured. Have a friend who is repeating the process now with 2 shepherd mixes.
Awww - I may not like dogs much - but Danes just always earn a special place in my heart - I just adore them - even as grown dogs - they are just the cutest thing int he world
I will never be without one. ANd there are SO MANY up for adoption due to the lunkheaded, I've gotta have the biggest, ME ME ME mentalities out there.
When Josie moves on, we are going to adopt hard luck siblings who deserve to stay together after what they have been through. It is a shame to know that option WILL be there when we are ready. But it will be. And who better than us to take it on ?
Thanks Abbey !

Troo-My buddy has been partial to wolfhounds for 20 years or so now, meaning that I have gotten to love 5 of them by proxy all of this time ! They are truly GREAT. Talk about big loveable muppets, especially when they do the wolfhound lean ! Like velcro to the hip.
Strumn-I was always a dog lover growing up. But when I moved out in an experience similar to yours, that was one of my biggest setback. The inability to have a dog in any of my apartments + the inability to really be fair to a dog at that point in my life. How'd I deal ? I learned to love cats ! And I learned to love friends' dogs when I could. It was more than ten years before I was stable enough to feel like I could provide a good home to a dog once my wife and I purchased our house. 3 dogs and 3 cats later..., I'll never be without either again.
I'd say take advantage of NOT having that responsibility right now. Maybe sneak a kitty in the apartment. You can leave them for 3 or 4 days and go road trippin' with no scruples. And if ya still can't be without a pooch, find a cool shelter to volunteer at. That way you can be around them any time you want. And when the time is right, you'll know and have the right lil buddy come to a new home for the both of you. (Not tryin' to be pejorative or act like ya don't know this, I just understand how you must feel to have lost your buddy just recently and don't really have the chance to hug on another when you miss him/her).

Thanks for the advice, but for some reason every cat I have ever met has the instinct desire to scratch the hell out of me. Thus, I am not so much of a cat person. Maybe they just always smelled my dog on me, who knows... But yeah, I'm just gonna wait a while til I can get another pooch and perhaps enjoy the lack of responsibility
There are several breeds that I would love to have - but - I will know which dog is meant to be when he/she is brought into the rescue leaque and my mother in law calls me to come look. She knows I am looking for a Boxer pup and so far the opportunity has not presented itself when we were ready

If/when I get a new cat/dog it will be from the shelter. My current kitty was a stray a friend found and I have to say that she is the most delightful creature I have ever known.
I have a friend that paid something like $1000 or $2000 for her puppy. I can't see ever doing that.
^^^^thanks - I had not thought of doing that - my prob is with MIL being in charge of the local rescue center - I really want to save one there because I see firts hand how many pets go unadopted.
but - if that does not work - I will check petfinder.com
petfinder.com is a resource that advertises pets from shelters and foster homes. most local shelters are participants. breed rescue groups as well. it is a great tool for sure ! you can put in the kind of animal, age, breed, sex, your zip code. wallah. i bet there are 50 options for most breeds and mixes within 50 miles of y'all. Also a blurb usually accompanies a picture, letting you know history, demeanor, compatibility with other pets and children, special needs, etc.
A chihuahua saves a toddler from a rattlesnake. The 5 lb pup suffered several bites (including one to the face), but they're both fine. How cool is that?

It kind of weird but all our dogs have been bitten by rattlesnakes several times (usually on the face and neck) and it never seems to bother them. They swell up so you have to remove their collars but they don't get sick at all. I always thought a rattlesnake bite would be very dangerous but my friends have all had the same experience.
