I see that Wisconsin's Leinenkugel's will have a stand at the Brooers Festival. I am a lifelong beer lover and politically active citizen in the state, and I feel compelled to say something about them.
As a beer lover: Given the choice between a Leinenkugel's and the Wisconsin microbrew behind Door #2, I will take the Wisconsin microbrew behind Door #2. The only time I will ever drink a Leinie's is at Brewers games at Miller Park, where they are the only alternative to the titular macrobrew. Leinenkugel's already has attained national (or close to it) distribution through their recent association with Miller-Coors, so their presence at the Brooers Festival should not offer anything you can't already get at home. I suggest that your money is better spent exploring many of the other worthy breweries with a presence at the Brooers Festival. There are no shortage of them.
As a politically active citizen: Scott Walker is my state's dipshit tea party governor elected last November, and my state has a severe case of buyer's remorse. He and his allies have attempted to rescind workers' rights, enacted the most restrictive voting legislation in the nation, violated open meetings laws, attempted to privatize my alma mater, hired for his administration sons of lobbyists and mistresses of legislators, prohibited collection of racial profiling statistics, and currently seeks the power to dissolve locally self-determined government bodies. That is airing but a few grievances, but I feel they are legitimate.
I participated in the citizens' peaceful occupation of my state house in Madison this February. I slept on the cold marble inside and on the freezing concrete outside. I marched with one hundred thousand; I watched my government conduct shameful business; I made signs; I wrote my representatives without response; I organized; I took The People's Mic at the protests; I blew on my vuvuzela when the situation called for it... These days, I am an intern with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. I spend as many hours of my week working for free to thwart Scott Walker as I spend gainfully employed. It is, in many senses, a big part of my mission in life for much of the next year to make the lives of Scott Walker and his allies a living hell until the day we finally get to run them all out of office.
In addition to my activities outlined above, I put my money where my mouth is: I boycott Scott Walker campaign contributors - including the Leinenkugel Brewing Company. Quick anecdote: Last year, one of the Leinenkugel brothers was contemplating a run for the Republican nomination to oppose Sen. Russ Feingold. The ensuing backlash led to his quick withdrawal from the race - the negative effect his stance had on the Leinenkugel business/brand was enough to discourage his participation in the primary. I ask that all of you join me in boycotting Leinenkugel's at the Brooers Festival this year. For those of you who are sympathetic to my cause and are feeling particularly ballsy, I suggest that you let the Leinenkugel's people know why you are opting to patronize one of the other options in the tent. Most corporations have a policy which requires any instance of protest to be reported - even an offhand comment like that can help send a message.
Please boycott Leinenkugel's at the Brooers Festival this year - for the sake your taste buds, for the sake of the other breweries there, for the sake of getting the most bang for your beer-buying buck and (hopefully) for the sake of your conscience.
Forward!
That is a sad state of affairs. I'll take you up with that boycott.
Couldn't hurt that I'm not a fan of Leinenkugel. Or the Brewers.

If corporations are going to promote political agendas then the least we can do is voice our approval/disapproval in the only way they understand - their bottom lines.
And thanks for those doing reviews. I'm looking forward to tasting some of these brews.
No Leinenkugel won't be hard fer me to do! Certainly not one of my favorite beers so I say "Bah!" to it! Plenty of actually delicious beer fer me to enjoy.
I LOVE TRYING NEW BEER! I've tried a large majority of what I can get here and am looking forward to trying out some Southern brews I've never heard of.

I'm also boycotting Leinenkugel. Didn't know the background, so thanks for the heads up. I also don't drink Coors - apart from the fact it sucks - because of some of their political leanings.
just found 11 Brooer's festival tickets in my fanny pack! SCORE
I'm not sure if you can use tickets from years past. I think I had some leftover from 2008, but I don't remember if I even tried to use them in 2009. No harm in tryin' though!
Miller & Coors are part of the same company, and I wholeheartedly support boycotting them both. In addition to Leinenkugel's, which has their distribution through MillerCoors.
Currently infuriating me: Currently there is legislation being pushed through the Joint Finance Committee and secretly into the budget bill without feedback from the small brewer. The Chapter 125 Branch Legislation would:
All Wisconsin Breweries and Brewpubs will be negatively affected by losing their Wholesale and retail licenses and the benefits those licenses provide. Eliminates the current option of a brewer choosing to self-distribute or starting a Wholesale Distribution Company. Eliminates a Brewers current right to have ownership in two restaurants. Protects (Grandfather Clause) currents Wholesalers retail licenses, while eliminating that benefit for new start up Wholesalers. Unfairly burdens new Wholesalers and breweries with a requirement of 25 separate independent retail customers before a Wholesale license can be granted. Eliminates the ability of Brewers to sell existing retail or wholesale operations separately from the brewing operation. Eliminates current Wholesale investment in privately held Wisconsin Breweries while allowing investment in out of state and foreign and publicly traded breweries. beeradvocate.com/forum/read/3813001
The Walker administration is even going after the small breweries in this state with restrictive regulation. MillerCoors was a major donor to the Walker campaign, as was Leinenkugel's. This is not coincidence.
It's bullshit, is what it is.
Boycott MillerCoors. Boycott Leinenkugel's.
We all deserve better, as citizens and as beer snobs.
Ive already boycotted miller-coors because of your informed posts Mr. Forward. I don't mind crossing Leinenklugel off the list, even though I like their Summer Shanty, but not enough to support that douchebag of a politician.
At Broo'ers, i'll be hitting up the southern pecan ale, if they got it again. And Va's very own Starr Hill. And the ninja porter

It's too bad you live so far away...if you were closer, I'd say you should come back to TN for the Southern Brewer's Festival we have here in Chattanooga on the riverfront every August. There are tons of brewers there (the website never lists all of them - I sampled from at least 18 last year; didn't hit half of 'em!)- and they've all got amazing microbrews from thick stouts to fruity lambics. It's a blast & every penny supports a local charity for kids. (And not one red cent goes to anything related to Scott Walker! )

Up in Boston this weekend they have the American Craft Beer Festival. Would have gone to that, had I not gone to Mountain Jam yesterday instead. From what I hear, it's monstrous and well worth the 50 dollars admission.
But I'm betting most of the breweries found there are from typical regions like New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado, California, and Oregon. Not much representing the South and middle. So this Broo'ers Tent should be nice for me.
So I explain the reasoning behind boycotting Leinenkugel's to my wife - and she jumps on board, too boot - and then she goes out two days later and buys me a 12 pack of Summer Shandy in cans for 'roo. Classic. Bless her heart, though. She knew I enjoyed having one or two on a hot summer day. I guess I'll be boycotting Leine's after 'roo :`)
Duuuuude, I'll trade you any Southern beer of your choice if you can bring some Hooker ale (even 1!) from the great Nutmeg State! I drank that when I lived there & haven't been back since '99. I miss the CT microbrews (but NOT the damn blue laws!) Don't even get me started on how much I miss having lobster traps a few feet from the kitchen. *sigh*

Your boycott hasn't been broken unless she was spending your money to grab it.
Once upon a time, even before their MillerCoors deal, Leinenkugel's was the only in-state craft brewery available in cans. It used to be the only non-Miller Wisconsin beer I could bring to Bonnaroo.
Last year was the first year Capital Brewery came in cans. I know they are not exclusively available in Wisconsin like many/most Wisconsin-based breweries, but I know their products might be available in states that neighbor Wisconsin. Definitely parts of Iowa & Illinois, at least. I also hear that Bell's from Kalamazoo Michigan is also now available in cans. Another fine microbrew from the Great Lakes area.
If you're in Wisconsin or vicinity looking for a good, local/regional beer available in cans, I suggest these guys.

This is my favorite summer beer; but the company's practices as outlined here, disgust me. Is there anything other canned shandy out there between MD and TN?
