I'm sorry I didn't catch up with anyone...it was an AMAZING weekend. Spiritualized's set left me in a literal daze. Wow.
I did, however, freak out some guy at Stubb's on Sunday night by walking up to him with RedVelvet in tow and asking if he was Dirty Jerzee. He wasn't. Oops.
^I didn't see any of those (well I was way in the back for foo fighters and could barely even hear them. The sound for that stage was horrible)
My faves: 1. Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet 2. The Raconteurs 3. Gogol Bordello 4. Yonder Mountain String Band 5. Flyleaf (my hard rock guilty pleasure - love them)
I have a hard time narrowing it down to 5 since I saw 30, so I shall give you 10:
1.The Raconteurs- They lived up to the hype.
2.Gogol Bordello- I have seen them before, but the still amaze me.
3.John Fogerty- I was going into this expecting a chill show, but man, Fogerty came out with a ton of energy and a giant smile on his face.
4.David Byrne - Another legend that knows how to step it up. I loved his dancers as well.
5.Hot Chip - They changed up the sound of their songs and are better because of it. I danced pretty much through out the entire set.
6.Fleet Foxes-This is my other surprise show of the weekend. You think the harmonies were good on the album, just wait until you hear them live. They were also quite funny as well.
7.Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings-I saw them at Bonnaroo, but this another band that knows how to preform live alot better than most.
8.Octopus Project- A local Austin band that is growing in popularity. They were fun, lively, and even brought out a local high school marching band to jam out with a couple time.
9.Black Keys- I wish I was closer for these guys, but none the less they rocked out their 45 minute set.
10. Blues Traveler- I have waited a long time to see these guys and they didn't let down. I didn't care for their new stuff, but they played them with alot of passion.
Honorable Mention- Delta Spirit, Antibalas, Vampire Weekend, Abigail Washburn, and Erykah Badu
this was my fourth year for ACL and my first for bonnaroo. i've always had a great time at ACL, but after experiencing bonnaroo and the people there, ACL doesn't live up anymore. i went to bonnaroo with three girlfriends and two were there this year with me at ACL and we just kept thinking how rude everyone was! people were pushing and shoving and stepping all over others. there were a couple of shows that i was at where i was surrounded by people who were just talking and drinking the WHOLE show. i guess living together really helps make such a community.
my favorite shows were: hot chip vampire weekend teagan and sarah xavier rudd beck (though i agree with aimee, i was kind peeved he started late and ended early)
^same experience. I saw a lot of great shows, and had a great time with my friends there, but the vibe was horrible. I haven't been to a big city fest before, and I think I had my expectations a bit too high. I think I'll stick to my camping-fest only rule from now on
Yeah...it' so hard to compare the big city festies with the camping festies cause the vibe IS so different....but the city fesites, esp this year have such KILLER lineups you just have to go.....
That was my experience with Lolly...the lineup was just a MUST SEE....but the vibe In the Toliet.... I mean...Jazz Fest was a TOTAL social scene....people were talking and not paying a lot of attention to the bands playing a lot of the time...but still they weren't just RUDE like they were at Lolly....like pushing right past you (or OVER you : to get to the front....then coming RIGHT back OVER you out again after 10 mins....when they got bored... That was just the crazy rude awful thing to me....
Last year at least...VooDoo had MUCH less of that kind of crap. Don't know if it was just the setup of it (the two main stages are right next to each other and they alternate having acts play....so you can just kind of hang between then, don't have to walk far at all...) The vibe was much more friendly and not so rude, but then I think NOLA is just a friendly place to begin with so that makes more sense ;D I'm hoping this year holds true as well....

really claire? you thought it was HORRIBLE?
ACL was my first experience with any big festival. i loved it, but of course going to roo for the first time changed my perspective on what a real festival is like. but i think the main thing is to stop trying to compare them. a city fest is NEVER going to feel like a camping fest. and while the vibe of a place is a big deal, the music is always (at least in my case) the priority. and as long as i live in austin, i don't plan on missing ACL...why would i miss that much good music just because you can't camp there?
not to mention i had SO MUCH FUN with everyone who came into town, and it was nice to be able to hang out and have down time. at bonnaroo(while late nights are my FAVE!), it doesn't leave much time for just sitting down with friends without having to look at your watch.
I agree...you can't compare a city festival to a camping festival. I've been to a bunch this year, they all had pros and cons. One thing I'm finding to be a common denominator at festivals and shows is non-stop talkers. WTF is up with that?!? Don't jockey for position up front if you're going to run at the mouth all day/night long...it's rude to the performers and it's annoying to those around you. AND WHAT YOU'RE SAYING ISN'T ALL THAT INTERESTING ANYWAY!!!

I did! I'm a long-time fan of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Allison coming out was such a bonus! The Dirty Jerzee thing got funnier a few days ago when I saw a picture of him and realized the guy I approached looking NOTHING like him. I'm a dork.
