Why are the set times so short for most of the bands?
I agree looking at the schedule I would expect a little more out of Superfly. Most ealry sets are 30-60 minutes and then main acts are 2 hours. Just feels like a very parsed, fast version of 'Roo.
I have no idea why they didn't make Friday start earlier in the day and even Saturday and Sunday would benefit from an 11am start (especially since everything is over by 10pm).
This isn't the cheapest fest by any stretch $100 bucks a pop per day I was expecting the bands to be a little more spread apart and the day to go to midnight. They promoted the whole "first time a bands played in dark in GGP", well it only be dark for an hour or so.
Still looking forward to it but have some reservations now that I have seen the set times.
Beck vs. The Black Keys is a no doubter in favor of the Keys imo. Beck seems like he's somewhere else when he's performing.
Agreed ... to an extent. While I have seen Beck at many stages of his life I don't have a clue as how the Modern Guilt is gonna play out live. He has been spaced out for awhile now but as a preformer he has been one of my favorites for years now... And I thought I was gonna see The Keys this past weekend. (Which didn't happen.)
how many times have you seen primus? how many times have you seen cake? i would choose cake over primus simply because i've seen primus and les many times and have never seen cake..i heard cake doing a show in nashville several years ago ..but did niot grt to go due to being at a bela fleck show and friday would be easy...the duo and black keys
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo

Felice vs. Manu Chao SUCKS!!!
But I will have to go with the Felice Brothers..
I wrote to OL earlier this week indicating that the FB should be playing much longer than 30 minutes! Anyone who's seen them live knows that they're one of the best live acts of the weekend.
I just landed a gig selling beers, all three days of the festival, being basically unemployed meant I couldn't afford to go, but I guess getting paid to be there is the next best thing. Tip the beer guys well, one of them will be me
You will be the most popular person there in my book. I work in the food industry. Trust me when I say I tip well. EDIT. Are you working with Starr Hill?

I'm working with some catering company that is doing all of the alcohol sales, I really hope I can sneak away to catch some Radiohead, last time I saw them in Virginia, I nearly caught hypothermia.
Wow I sold a ton of beers, I am beat up, but made a lot of loot and saw all 3 headliners, and Panic played near my beer tent, so it all worked out pretty well for me, couldn't really judge how the fest really was though from a regular attendees perspective, but people seemed happy. I heard Primus was amazing from everyone.
I generally like the way that Superfly treats people. They have their moments but overall they do a good job. APE is a good fit for them. They did a wonderful job and I really like the way this whole thing was ran. Missed Beck for the Keys and had to leave early ffgor the flight home so we missed Wilco but overall happppy with the whole thing. Everyone we talked to had a blast there. Tons of great shows. Mother Hips and Bon Iver blew me away and really hoping for Café Tacuba set at the farm next year. If they do it again. We will be back.

jackie green blogs about outside lands fest: Hi folks. We had a great time at the Outside Lands Festival. There’s something special about really well-run music festivals. Perhaps it’s the synergy of all the different bands and styles coming together. Perhaps it’s just the dope. Perhaps a bit of each.
In any case, I was thoroughly impressed by this particular festival. There was a lot of talk (among both artists and fans) about weather or not San Francisco could pull off a festival of this size. Now granted, I only spent one day there, but from my perspective i’d have to say: It was a complete success. I’m very proud to have been a part of the whole thing and I hope the festival continues each year.
I suppose my only complaint would be that all my friends bands we’re playing at almost exactly the same time as mine! So we couldn’t do any sit-ins….bummer. Next time, we’ll have to see if we can’t get the powers that be to spread us out over a longer period so we can do guest spots in each others bands.
Guesting in different bands is half the fun (for me anyways) of festivals. I always get really, really excited when I get asked to sit in. I sat in with Michael Franti at Mountain Jam this year and had a blast. I had no idea what song we were going to do, but there’s something awesome about learning a tune on the spot in front of 10,000 people. Some might call it frightening. I call it awesome.
Phil & Friends has a lot of guests. We’ve had Warren Haynes, Ryan Adams, Steve Berlin, Peter Wolf, Levon Helm, Amy Helm, John Scofield, Trey Anastasio, etc. I’ve learned something from each one of them. I’ll never forget Peter Wolf. He comes out…Boston, I think…he’s got a half a bottle of Makers Mark in one hand and gets out front and center and starts getting people to make some noise. I think people were a little shocked at his bravado, so they were kind of quiet at first…he says something like: “Cmon, what is this a Barry Manilow concert?” …and then proceeds to kick everyones ass. I loved it.
But I digress. I just wanted to thank everyone for coming out to the festival. Truly, a festival can’t exist without festival goers. So, thank you.

Jackie did an excellent show. I'd seen him 5 or so times with Phil & Friends, where he almost always did a song or 2 of his own, and I saw him do the accoustic thing this year at Roo with Phil, Larry Campbell, and Larry's wife, but this was the first time I saw him with his own band.
I loved this festival. They have some kinks to work out logistically (like the sound not cutting out!), but I had a blast. I hadn't seen Radiohead in a couple years and they were indescribably wonderful. Other standouts from my perspective were Manu Chao, Steve Winwood, Grace Potter, Lyrics Born, and even Tom Petty (whose Bonnaroo set a few years ago did nothing for me). Then there are some folks who invariably do the same basic act, but do it well -- like Toots and Regina Spektor (who remembered all her lines!). I don't mention Beck, The Black Keys, or Rod y Gab because I didn't catch them. Conflicts, conflicts, conflicts.
My one word of warning for people thinking about coming is that this is an urban festival. It's not a Bonnaroo where everyone travels to this out-of-the-way location because of their love of music. Plenty of people are just there for the day and plenty wouldn't be there if it weren't right in their back yards. I saw a lot more pissed-off people in 3 days of Outside Lands than I've seen in 4 years of Roo. There was also a heavier security presence inside the venue and police presence outside. Maybe this is to be expected, but it was a completely different vibe.
Wow, I had the complete opposite view on this festival. I thought it was poorly organized and had some major issues. However, I only went on Friday so maybe they fixed things as the festival went along.
First off on Friday they did not have enough of the 5 line buses running so people were jammed into them. Of course our bus blew its hydrolics and went out of commission, forcing us to jam into another bus a mile down the road. I do have to say that the weather was great that night and early on everything seemed fine. But then when we went to see Beck, they put him on a tiny stage. It seemed smaller than any roo stage. Of course it was packed and by this point all the beer lines, bathroom lines, and ID check lines were rediculously long. The beer line was so long that it cut the field off in half where Beck was playing. Plus Beck did not have enough volume due to a lack of speakers. So they cranked up the treble which made it sound bad. However, he did have a good set list. Another issue was that there were fences everywhere for no reason which caused horrendous bottle necking, and as you can imagine getting back and forth from Beck to Radiohead was pretty bad. We left Beck early to get settled for Radiohead. We went to get beers before Radiohead and even in the shortest of lines we spent 30 minutes getting beers and were paying as Radiohead played 15 steps. Slight bummer. And then the sound cut off during two songs while Radiohead was playing. On the bright side, Radiohead played a good song list which included the best live version I have ever heard of Idioteque. They seemed to be jamming out slightly longer than the other times that I have seen them on this tour.
Now, again I only went on Friday, so maybe they fixed somethings the rest of the festival. They did have buses waiting for us on the way out, which seemed to be in response to the bad transportation on the way in. Maybe I was a little spoiled from Lolla, but I thought Lolla was a much more organized festival. Of course Lolla has had a couple years practice, so that helps.
I can say that this was the best festival weather I have ever experienced.

Looks like Outside Lands is returning in 2009. No official announcement, but Dave Matthews has a August 29 date on his calendar in San Francisco at venue TBA. Where else could it be? Not PacBell; the Giants are at home that day.

I noticed the dates of the 2009 festival as aug 21,22,23. I found the date on one of the places that does horseback security. I do realize that doesnt make it official but it is something.
