The only thing i am disappointed about is Widespread Panic closing the festival. THat will give me time to wind down and ride the ferris wheel and do things i missed out on last year. Thank god for les claypool or I would be bummed, and the superjam is yet to be announced. I think they realize we would like Clapton at least.
I really don't mean disrespect to WSP and their fans, but even their fans have to realize this is let-down considering how many times they have played the festival and the way Superfly went about the whole thing. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
All I know is all the jam-band junkies better be happy, as well as the JJ haters. Because it seems like Superfly/AC did listen to those people, shifting JJ and adding WSP.
Personally this news is a giant: "MEH."
As for the other additions: YES on Les, and I am a huge fan of Charli2na.

While not a big Panic fan, I LOVE Jimmy Herring, and am just beyond totally excited that JJ will not close the fest. To have anyone other than him close is the true big announcement. Panic will do their 3 hour 2 set show and be one last chance to rock some more before waiting for the nest roo. JJ closing was a truly dissappointing prospect.....
does anyone else suspect that at some point in the past couple of years their has been a shift in management at superfly or something? While it is still the same company, maybe somebody new is in charge and making decisions and thats the reason it seems things are getting messy. (i.e. overhyping announcements, adding metallica, and just making generally unpopular decisions)

I thought if I slept on it, I might feel better about things . . . but I don't.
I'm happy for all of you that got Clapypool, I truly am. But I have to say that I don't think it is at all unfair of me to be completely disappointed with this announcement. Say what you will, Suerpfly knew exactly what they were doing touting this as a "big announcement". This came on the heels of their rival festival adding Prince to their line-up. What was our big news? We got Widespread Panic - again. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Panic has seen far more stage time than any other artist in Bonnaroo history. Adding them to the line-up isn't a "big announcement," it's a lot of other things though: stereotypical, redundant, uninspiring, anticlimactic, etc. I'm not really sure what gave WSP their "headliner" status to begin with. I don't think they're bad, by any stretch of the means. But, I don't think they deserve to headline Bonnaroo year in and year out. Seriously, Panic is cool, but who decided they were headliner material? Is it simply because they are willing to play for four hours? Look at the disdain over the decision to replace ABB with WSP. No one thinks Panic is comparable to ABB, and ABB were a pre-headliner. The aforementioned comments aside, I have one, even bigger problem with this whole thing: For me, and many people I know, this "big announcement" actually makes the festival worse. I have to call my girlfriend this morning (who is expecting "big news) and explain to her why Jack Johnson is no longer a headliner. I have to explain that now we have the same Sunday headliner we didn't care about last year, and to top that off, Jack Johnson has a shorter set which now stands to conflict with something. I know there were a lot of people who didn't want JJ to close the festival, and I guess you got your wish. I never thought he was a perfect choice, but I would greatly prefer him to WSP.
Bottom line, this announcement (to me) make Bonnaroo considerably less exciting than it was less week. I went from have two headliners I wanted to see to having one headliner I want to see (not to mention the loss of ABB).
It's kind of a letdown, seeing as Coachella did add Prince, who I'm not a huge fan of, but Prince hasn't headlined Coachella four years already. On the other hand, I think a.) Superfly felt they had some kind of jam quota to fill and b.) Coachella probably planned for Prince. Bonnaroo didn't plan on ABB having to drop out. They probably only found out a couple weeks ago and didn't have much to work with.
I haven't seen WSP before. 2006 was my first year and we left after The White Stripes last year because of the dust. So, I am kind of looking forward to seeing their set. I can see how other people who've already seen them, though, would be upset

I've seen Panic 3 times at Bonnaroo now, and while I'm not going to say any of their shows were "bad," I will say that they are the most lackluster headliner I've ever seen (3 times now). None of their shows break into my top 10 from any given weekend. Every set was like "meh" and the best parts were when they brought guests out.
How is it that a band, who can't even sell out 5,000 capacity venues, is deemed worthy of headlining Bonnaroo so many times?!?

my biggest problem is with Superfly... again, the KNEW that people were going to get really excited about the "big announcement", especially given that their rivals were kicking their ass so bad.....
and Superfly knew they'd get a lot of buzz for this announcement.... and it's like they did a cost-benefit-analysis and said.... "well, fuck'em, we'll get our copy, and they already bought their tickets anyway"....
i expect some realy shitty stuff from corporoate entities... i had always put bonnaroo above that kind of shit...
i emailed them last night and i'd encourage everyone to do the same...
this all started because they WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO ANNOUNCE IN BOLD TYPE THAT THEY HAD A "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT"....

I have been to 3 consecutive Bonnaroos, and they only headliner I ever skipped was Tool. That being said, here's my personal ranking of the headliners I've seen:
1. Radiohead- one of the best shows in 'roo history. 2. Petty 3. Phil 4. DMB 5. WSP's first night of Bonnaroo 05 6. The Police 7. WSP's second night of Bonnaroo 05 8. WSP last year
My biggest problem about this whole thing is not them adding WSP. It's the way Superfly handled the situation. I agree with BD that this announcement is "stereotypical, redundant, uninspiring, anticlimactic, etc". Toughest part to swallow is that they knew exactly how this "big announcement" was working itself into a frenzy. Ultimately, just to be let down.
Is it still going to be a great festival...yes. But I'm not as excited about the festival as I was before they said they had an announcement to make.
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!

I beg to differ, well at least from my point of view, The two nights of Panic at the first Roo were epic shows. Of course that was with Mikey and all.

To each his own. I think Panic would make a great tent show. I think Panic makes a weak headliner - especially in comparison to Bonnaroo's competition.

well said. i guess this is what really bothers me the most. they had to know, as reasonable people, that WSP did not qualify as "big announcement".... they knew we'd get excited and that they'd get even more exposure.... someone should have told them that eventually you have to show your cards... perhaps they were planning on folding all along...
i mean ask yourself... who else among our top billed acts played MTSU to a less than packed house? who plays MTSU for chrissakes!!
BD - I agree with you - I am thrilled with Les - more then thrilled - this means I get to see him 2 x in one year - wonderful!
I am less then thrilled with WSP and even more less then thrilled that they moved JJ - I was looking forward to a long set from him and a nice relaxing end to the festival (I know alot of people don't want that) and now - his set is cut short and the potential for conflicts is there - I'm not happy at all.
Then - the way that AC/Superfly went about doing this was total bullshit - they should have just said there would be an artist announcement on Thursday - they knew that the Bonnaroo faithful would take the "big" and run with it - given Lolla's line-up and Prince being announced for Coachella.
Anyway - I'll still be there and will still love almost every minute of it!
I will preface this comment by pointing out that I am not a fan of WSP or JJ but I do love ABB and am dissapointed they can't make it. My plan for the Sunday headliner has been to use it as background music while I am relaxing at my campsite.
This being said I believe Superfly/AC were put in a bad position by a major band having to drop out and have done the best they can with the little time they had available. I still hope that Mule gets added, as they are doing a show in Alabama the weekend before Bonnaroo, but I am sure Superfly/AC are well aware of this fact also and have tried/are trying to book them. I do know it may not happen as it is ultimately up to the band and any other personal/professional obligations they may already have.
I believe many of us on Inforoo overestimate the impact we have on Superfly/AC. While this is the biggest independent Bonnaroo resource and I know for a fact that Superfly/AC peek in to see what is happening they do not base their decisions solely on what is said on this board because it is likely that more than 80% of people who go to Bonnaroo have no association with this community.
I also think many people on this board overestimate the competition between Bonnaroo and other festivals, especially Coachella. While the various promoters do keep track of what other festivals are doing, the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of festival goers come from within a reasonable driving distance of the festival site. Each festival does try to draw big names but they also have to tailer their lineup to the regional demographic.
JJ - I was looking forward to a long set from him and a nice relaxing end to the festival (I know alot of people don't want that) and now - his set is cut short and the potential for conflicts is there -
Conflicts? With Jack Johnson? Careful your head doesn't explode.

People who want to see Jack Johnson headline need to expand their musical tastes.
i think tickets were probably selling at a slow rate so superfly decided to try to attract the crowd that built and was then abandoned by roo. i dont see it working though. it makes total sense to me. they finally jumped the shark . metallica, kanye, and jack johnson dont sell many festie tix. and they realized that jack johnson closing roo was not pleasing anyone outside of jack.

F*ck Superfly and f*ck Panic. There's a reason they're only popular on the east coast. I'm SO disappointed by this weak excuse for a "big" announcement. Sorry for the negativity but I think they could have had something way better to announce than this.

the way I see it, the white stripes were the sunday headliner last year. I'm nearly certain they had a larger audience than WSP, and for me it was the climax of sunday, if not the entire festival. WSP was more of the resolution...one last chance to smell patchouli and hear bonnaroo before packing up and heading home...I think that's the key difference between sunday headliner and festival closer...WSP fills that role quite well...
this year, it looks like plant and krauss might very well be closing the which stage, ala white stripes last year, and one can only hope they have something special lined up...they will no doubt do some zeppelin songs, and the only question is what "guests" they might bring up...either way, I'm looking forward to that set based on the album and live tv stuff I've seen alone...
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio."
What a huge disappointment. I'm almost considering not going to Bonnaroo this year, and I had been planning on going regardless of the line up. It frustrates me to no end to see these boring jam bands added to the lineup when there are so many other great artists out there. Coachella owns Bonnaroo this year- they got it right. They added people like Prince and Aphex Twin, we got a jam band that the majority of us are sick of. It's going to take me a while to get over this, it might be the last straw for me. I wasn't expecting anything HUGE, like Clapton, but I thought they would pull in a decent replacement for the Allman Brothers and a few other good artists. It's going to take me a while to get over this.
Being the forever optimist (which is hard right now) maybe this is a trick and they will still announce something "big." Okay, not likely, but can't blame me for dreaming!

Yeah I know!!! What a bunch of idiots! Why couldn't they just add Led Zep?!!? Or AT LEAST Floyd! Sheesh. And no Phish reinion either!
