I agree with what many people many people are saying here. While I am not a fan of WSP, I am more annoyed by the way this was handled, announcing it in advance like that.
Many of the people posting here, incidentally, might like to sign the petition I'm circulating for Superfly, just to let them know that as fans we are pissed and think they should think more carefully how what they say in the future: bonnaroo.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=music&action=display&thread=12707
coachella lets me down every year since music ends at 12. that just sucks period.
Agreed. One of my favorite things about Bonnaroo is that there's music until well into the night (often until sunrise) and, when the music stops, there's still plenty to do in Centeroo.
It doesn't hurt that I live 90 miles from the farm.
Lineup announcements are aways the big setup for the big let down. I mean With any addition SOMEONE will be disappointed. It's just the nature of the buisness
This is true, but what people are forgetting is that this is the first timed they've ever announced an announcement in advance. That's why all the hype built up! Everyone thought, if they're saying they've got something big coming, it MUST be big.
Superfly didnt intentionally hype this up? CMON.. Look at the other fests that were just announced. Radiohead, NIN, RATM, Prince were all added. So what should superfly do? COMPETE. So hey.. after all this they say they have a big exciting announcement. AND they put out the clues. Whats the point of all that except to hype this??? They could have handled this MUCH better by saying they had a replacement. I wouldnt have cared one bit had they said a replacement and the band was WSP. BIG and EXCITING is not WSP. I know I am not the only one that was disapointed. I agree that we had something to do with it, but still, in light of the recent announcements BIG and EXCITING should have meant more than WSP.
Dude, I love how you show-up opportunistically and complain about everything even though you probably aren't going. It really makes these boards a lot better. Thanks.
(go ahead smite me, I'm going to class)
lol im in the "im really dissapointed" thread and im the complainer???? hows that work??? i like the additions
and the after thought about the smite was nice. i love the karma carers. they are a funny bunch. what class is that? 6th grade social studies?
This is an ironic post coming from someone who's posts demonstrate the spelling and grammatical skills of a 13 year old.
I read it before even making that post. I respect your request Wooz; however, the gentleman in question made a personal attack on me, and I felt it only necessary to respond. Notice that his post was directly insulting. It's pretty evident to most people on this board that I am a college student, and he took a deliberate cheap shot. Yet nothing I said was false. If you look at the content of Dude's posts, his spelling and grammar honestly do reflect those of a child, and I think that is ironic coming from someone making a crack about middle school education. If I had said "Your an idiot" that would have been crossing the line. But frankly, I think I just pointed out a fact.
BTW, Yes, I made a typo in the previous post (also ironic), which Dude has pointed out. I have since corrected said typo, but thought I should acknowledge it, to allow for consistency in Dude's post.
It's interesting... I'm trying to look at all of this through a different lens now, later in the day and I actually think that the big announcement is what it is because they ARE selling tickets well. They don't need to make a play any bigger than they already were. In fact, the "big" announcement was WSP - who apparently had been in the works to appear for months, not just in the last few days (go look at the ROO CLUES thread with the very early Herring answer).
Meanwhile, Jack Johnson will likely play to a larger crowd in the pre-PJ slot than the final Sunday one.
So I feel like this is all quite calculated. I still feel like there is another addition or two to make- maybe large, maybe not. But the idea that what was announced today was somehow just cobbled together in the last two days is absurd. And they didn't have to make a Prince-sized announcement because they likely didn't need that ticket-boost. WSP is not a ticket-sales booster on their own as an addition.
My own disappointment in WSP is just the sheer frequency at headliner status- and that frequency was echoed by Superfly themselves in an interview where they commented that they "can't have WSP play every year." But hey, it is what it is.
I have to finally say - I am laughing at the whole thing - as the day has gone on and I have read more and more nasty and angry posts from everyone (mostly people newly registered on Inforoo) it has become more and more hilarious to me.
We have half a dozen threads all b*itching about the same thing (thanks to the mods for trying to clean it up) and now we have long time members hurling insults at each other over grammer - and it all stems from the fact that AC/Superfly did not do what we expected them to do.
Wake up people!!! They have never done what we expected them to do and they never will. Bonnaroo will continue to go on with a diverse line-up. There are tons of great bands playing - lots for people to do and see. Go - make the most of it - listen to something new - or even something old that you thought you did not like - your mind might change while you are there.
Last night I would have gone on here and said I was dissapointed, but now that I have cooled down I'm quite good about it now. Yes, we have had Widespread Panic headline five out of the seven years at Bonnaroo, but when has Bonnaroo been strictly about headliners? If you want a headliner heavy line-up go to Lollapalooza or Coachella. I don't see anyone complaining about Les Claypool being at Bonnaroo every year except last year.
I think Inforoo overshot itself and got selfish on additions because in a sense this is a big announcement. We added a headliner, Jack Johnson is going to play before Pearl Jam and will possibly sit-in on their set, added Les Claypool the unofficial "Mayor of Bonnaroo", and a number of smaller artists/bands. I think we did good on additions this week.
Am I going to go see Widespread? Probably not. I didn't last year and I had a blast at Bonnaroo. I would have prefered a number of bands other than Widespread, but overall I have alot other of artists and bands I will see that weekend that it won't really matter. Plus we have probably another round of additions plus the jazz tent since there are a number of bands we have found out to be playing at Roo, but haven't been announced yet.

agreed, I was busting AC/Superfly's balls about the initial lineup. but as I was looking, and reading. I realized Holy shit. Phil Lesh is a Latenight. Holy Shit, So is MMJ.
They are sticking to the roots of the festival, which is sweet.
Now all we need is some Warren, Which i'm positive we'll get. and if we dont. its okay and some more STS9 and..of course the schedule
Well, considering everyone else is, I might as well add my two cents as well
I'm not a Panic fan, I don't have them, but I'm not fan by any means, so my opinion is slightly biased, but I'll do my best to be as level headed as possible. I kinda side with the people that say that say that WSP is a let down. This will be my first Bonnaroo and I have never seen WSP before, but I completely feel for the people that are sick of seeing them headline. If they were on the lineup right from the start, people would have had the option to not purchase tickets, but the way things went down, a lot of people are now stuck seeing a headliner they have seen almost every year. I'm sure the reason Superfly said they had "an exciting announcement" was to offset the disappointment that some people were experiencing after the Allmans cancelled. A cancellation doesn't sound so bad when you say there's something exciting coming. Obviously this board hyped things up a little too much, but still, you see what I'm getting at.
All that being said, like I've stated in threads before, I don't care who gets added. I got tickets because there were like 30 bands on the initial lineup that I want to see, so anything that gets added now is gravy (like Les fucking Claypool!). The only way Bonnaroo could be ruining for me is if Robert Randolph, BB King, Pearl Jam, Gogol Bordello, Solomon Burke, Phil Lesh, Plant and Krauss, The Raconteurs, Derek Trucks, David Cross, Levon Helm, Willie Nelson, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco , Little Feat and like a dozen others would have to cancel mysteriously. I just can't see that happening

when i initially saw there was a huge announcement on thursday i stayed up until 2:30 am trying to find out what was so huge i guess everyone else did too due to the fact that it took forever to load any page with "bonnaroo" in the title but i digress after all the anticipation and through all the "struggles" to find out the information i was so................... i dunno the word for it i guess ................ overjoyed ! blasphemy you say? for shame all of you naysayers albeit only 2 of the bands added really got my attention (wsp and claypool) the others probably aren't bad either has superfly really i mean really ever let you down sure some bands might not appeal to your tastes but have you ever been standing at the roo and thought to yourself "man this sucks i wish i was at home on the couch" aside from the dust bonnaroo has never left a bad taste in my mouth sure maybe not all of the announcements are going to make you scream for joy (metallica didn't really do it for me) but if you use patience your time may very well come look back on past announcements phil and mmj late night set disco biscuits added wood brothers added jack johnsons not headling anymore so as previously mentioned You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time and finally (yeah i know) for those of you who can't stand those spreadnecks and their jam band music go and not dance elsewhere but still have good time
Do people complain about moe. at Summer Camp every year? I can only imagine the riots that would ensue if WSP had three nights at Bonnaroo.
You people need to chill out. If you don't like WSP, don't go see them. Spend that time riding the ferris wheel and wandering around Centeroo and meeting other people who don't like WSP.

I am not disappointed....(we got Les Claypool for goddsake!!!) ;D ;D ;D ;D
IMO, the only real hype was on this board, so in actuality, most of the inforoo community let itself down. I am so thrilled with the lineup as it was already, yeah the ABB loss was quite the bummer, but hey things happen, and my real concern lies in Gregg Allman gaining his full strength, and continuing to perform in the future.
Besides, do you REALLY go to Bonnaroo for the headliners? I don't. I'm happy for the WSP addition, it keeps the great sense of community alive for another year (something your Coachella, Lolla, etc. have zero of), and keeps me coming back for four of the best days of my year. People piss and moan about the "community" and the "vibes" of the fest changing, but get all riled up when two of the biggest bands in their scene get added. What gives?
I love this board, but the days like this when the elitist bitch-fest is at its peak, I love to keep to the lurking, or **gasp** turn off my computer and read a book.
i go for the late night shows... the headliners are just a bonus... im sure plenty will agree.. I will try to give WSP a chance but man i dunno who was gonna close before but i wouldnt mind something diff from last year.. its all about variety.. and summer camp is moe. festival i thought soo it makes sense for them to headline 3 nights.. bonnaroo isnt wsp festival in my mind.. maybe some will disagree

Dude, that's funny. I was at work one day talking to my jamband-playing friend after the lineup was announced, and he actually said "I mean, what the hell, they're taking a Widespread Panic festival and making it, what? Jack Johnson and Metallica?"
I agree with you that it's not WSP's fest, you just made me remember what he said. Some people really do get stoked about seeing Panic there every year.
