Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Well it is a big deal to those of us who have gone year after year and invested literally thousands of hard earned dollars. I dont know how many of you work and how many of you are college aged kids who's parents pay for your summer fun (not to generalize), but for some of us who have to budget this stuff and have to buy our tickets in advance...its a real slap in the face to get the same tired act year after year after year. Ive seen far too many WSP shows. Yes, Jimmy Herring is absolutely phenomenal and he probably should have joined the band along time ago cause I think its the best work he's ever done. But that doesnt change the fact that Ive heard their down home gospely swamp rock year after year after year. Bonnaroo needs to wise up and realize that its gone beyond the small fest it began as. Champions of the jam scene are no longer headliners in the grand scheme of things. I mean how many times can you guys see the same 30 or so "jambands" before it starts getting repetitive? And dont give me the "Well they change the songs every night" excuse cause for every band who's changing and morphing the songs through intricate movements theres a dozen other so-called "jambands" who just wank around in E for 12 minutes of mindless soloing. I applaud Bonnaroo for realizing this on a small scale and filing the tents with acts who are pushing the boundries of song compositon and expression, but they totally slacked as far as headliners go this year. I had given up on Zep and Phish but I thought we were gonna get Radiohead. Man, that would have made the summer for me. Now I have to spend more money I dont have to go see Radiohead in STL or just sell my Roo ticket and go to Lolla. The only thing that would have let me down more that Panic would have been Nickelback.
I've written too much here today and destroyed my productivity, but just felt I should reaffirm the legitimacy at being pissed over this (no offense to the panic lovers, I truly am happy for you).
Let's first look at what we could (reasonably) expect. This is determined both by the literal happenings and their context. Look at the actions for what they were: Superfly announced the cancellation of the Allman Brothers Band and then excitedly announced a coming announcement.
As someone earlier in this thread pointed out and I think this has been largely ignored, what was announced was not an act, but another announcement even though they already had full knowledge of what they were going to announce. Now, unless my conception of normal behavior is completely fucked, announcing something usually implies that the something is more important than another something that isn't announced. I don't normally announce that I'm about to take a shit, for example.
Because of this I think that if someone announces a coming announcement of a band addition, one would be in the very least justified in assuming that this coming announcement is more important than the average band addition-- I mean after all , why not just announce it there? Furthermore, I'd say by that same line of reasoning that one would be justified in assuming that if someone announces an announcement that is emphasized to be big and exciting twice in all caps, the said announcement would be more important than an announcement that emphasized the content was big and exciting twice in all caps.
So, we have that it is reasonable-- dare I say likely-- that the mentioned announcement was going to be more important than an out of the blue announcement with big and exciting (emphasized twice) content. I'd say that we can assume that the "more" quantizer is significant too, as really let's be honest here in our culture we rarely announce things, so if someone announces an announcement (the content of which they already know), they are obviously convinced that the content of the announcement is contextually very, very big. Someone pointed out that superfly has never done this before; the only thing they ever do this with is announcing the date when the lineup announcement comes out. Really, with this alone one would be justified in assuming something huge. There was nothing superfly needed to find out, they had that information at the time of announcement and chose to withhold it and hype it up in that manner.
Now, the context. The Allman Brothers were being replaced... further yet, they were being replaced among announcements of NIN, Radiohead, Rage, Prince. You can say what you want about expectations, but I'd say that rival companies in a market remain competitive in a free market is a reasonable one, especially when the company announces a big, exciting announcement in advance when they already know what they are going to announce.
I realize I'm starting to sound quite redundant, but just to emphasize and sum below:
No, superfly didn't overtly hint at any one big performer or anything of the sort, but the hype generated on this board was HARDLY a mere construct of the members' imaginations. Whenever someone announces an announcement that has content they emphasize multiple times to be big and exciting (esp when they already know the content), and then release hints like "over the moon," that is overt, intentional fucking hype, plain and simple, no fan geekout necessary.
Now, the second part. In order for there to be a legitimate gripe, the announcement can't be worthy of the latter hype.
I realize that for some, this may be big. But overall? A band who's top record placement on the charts ever was like 34 or something? A band that has played bonnaroo now 5/7 years? Considering especially that they are replacing the allman bros during a time when other festies are busting out names like radiohead, rage, etc.? Was this really worth that hype?
Did they really have to go out of their way to announce that they were announcing them and hype it up? Couldn't they have just announced it then?
I can see that some people want to just take it for what it is now and be happy, and I'm fine with that, but realize that pretty much that is irrelevant to the issue at hand, which is whether the announcement was a disappointment.
I'd say it was, that said I was and still am mad stoked for bonnaroo, just don't pretend like the hype on this board was solely a function of the board members. Normal people don't build something up like that and then announce some default backup plan.

Personally, I always annouce when I'm gonna take a shit, especially a big one...out of courtesy...but you'd better believe if I build something up like that, I've got something huge coming out
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio."

if you seriouslly feel this way, why dont you sell your ticket and go to another fest? there are plenty, and if you are THAT unhappy, why waste "thousands of hard earned dollars"? if you are having such a hard time budgeting yourself for roo, it may be a good idea to go to a more local or smaller fest.
most people here pay for their own fests. personally i dont know of any "college aged kids who's parents pay for their "summer fun" as far as roo OR any of their "fun". i have no idea where you live from or how old you are or why you would think this (other than its something that you have seen on TV). while this may be the case in some areas of the country, it is plain and simple not something that happens everywhere. I dont have a single friend who's parents pay for any part of their leisure activities / vacation. Most of my friends who are college aged recieve no financial support from their families and are completely on their own.
you say 'not to generalize', but you just did. obviously. something made you post that. I have never read a single post on here by anyone saying that their parents were paying for their roo trip. I'm sure if we took a poll, less than 1% of people would say that their parents gave them money to go to roo.
you also may not have known that the majority of roo attenders are above college age.
and there are tons of things i could say about your last statement, but i'll refrain for now.
wow it has gotten so bad....... WE TOLD YA SOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (for years.... can all you not-sees see the path to mainstream now? youve missed all the signs along the way but now WE HAVE ARRIVED!!!!)
who woulda thought that in 02 that 6 years later metallica, pearljam, and kanye west fans would be running rampant talking sh!t about wsp and all those boring jambands. talking about roo vs. coachella and lolla. its sad. if they had announced the 08 lineup at the 02 fest roo woulda gone under because no one would have forked over the millions of dollars for them to create this bastard' roo. everyone would have quit going. its disgusting. it sucks and its why i dont post much around here anymore. the vibe here has been dragged to the same place as the vibe at roo. over run by kids and asshats. i swore id go to every roo they would ever have after my first. but it just isnt roo. 95 percent of you just dont get what its all about. i guess thats what happens when the lineup becomes some coachella euro fest sh!tshow with a couple of decent acts sprinkled in. its all about the money! i know no one who can even talk about roo with a straight face anymore. the only festie people who go anymore are yellin rolls and doses all day. its an amateur fest for custies and yuppies... its sad... i will go back to lurking and whatnot cuz i dont need to Ann Coulter all the time. but it is hard to sit around and listen to the new roo fans blast what used to be such a magical and positive weekend. what a waste of such a magical event.
i guess kill em all will be the slogan for roo this year. but i guess it fits..
yeah the ABB loss was quite the bummer, but hey things happen, and my real concern lies in Gregg Allman gaining his full strength, and continuing to perform in the future.
so the OP is mad because he has to stay at bonnaroo? Then why are you going?
Is it just me or would some people complain about anything, if you want every band that you like to be there and your gonna complain if you dont get your way then start your own festival. If its good maybe ill go.
Haha... Yeah! Langerado with- REM! Beasties! Such a jam fest!
Guys, don't fall into anyone's trap here. People gripe because there's not enough jam bands and then when they're made headliners they gripe still- and those that didn't gripe start griping about that.
Roo is, has always been, and continues to be, about musical variety. The people that like to categorize "jam bands" sometimes forget (and I'm guilty too) that even that niche is about amalgamating musical styles (go listen to some soul in the 60's, blues, everything- it's all there). So braying like a donkey that Roo is somehow this amazing, changed beast is hilarious.
Moreover, Inforoo is also becoming more popular as more and more people feel comfortable engaging in social media. So of course the opinions are getting hotter and heavier-- there's not just ten people shootin' the breeze anymore. It doesn't mean the sky is falling.
Meanwhile, the very peace-and-love would-be-hippies become incredibly conservative, xenophobic and elitist - passing judgement on "kids" and such. How ironic, eh?
I order everyone to go plan your summers over a cool beverage and have fun, no matter what you do. Good music will find you if you let the rest of us find our good music for ourselves.
I gotta say, I'm pretty bummed out. WSP isn't bad, I was just expecting something more. I still think they're hiding some tricks up their sleeves.
Nothing fruitful to add, just thought your avatar was kickass Jack. i love that shit. Karma is in order.
PS-Panic is always great, always fun. ive seen them a lot, and would have been stoked for something mo betta but we got a really good jamband to close the best festival ever. so lets just make it happen. ;D

Amen Dude...I'm with you on this. What happened to all the good vibes and everything that made Roo what it was? Sigh. Oh well. Won't let it ruin my weekend...just find some good people to hang out with, make new friends, and enjoy life with good people and good music.

should they also get off your lawn, gramps?
what does that mean - "get what it's about". What is it about then? What are people missing?
To me, Bonnaroo is a retreat from reality. It's mildly life altering, definitely mind altering, and a hell of a lot of fun. It's where music lovers gather to watch shows. There's almost nothing i like more in the world than that festival conundrum of "do i see this band, or that band" - because how often do you get to make these kinds of decisions 4 times in an afternoon?! It's about looking around you at everyone and knowing that person made the same decision as you - it's an equalizer - sort of like corn
I don't think anyone was complaining about there not being enough jam bands at roo, I think they were complaining about there being not any GOOD jam bands at roo. In my book there is only two good jam bands at roo this year one of which I don't even really consider them a jamband but hey, thats just me. Also cupcake I think u underestimate the number of people at roo who's parents pay for their trip, I would put the number at at least 1/3rd of people there and I would say a larger number have their parents help them. I know many many a people who's summer fests are completely paid for by their parents and of the people I know going to roo all of them are receiving financial help in some form from their parents.
Those of you that have been to Bonnaroo in the past and now have decided - for whatever reason - to not attend this year or ever again - why do you feel the need to constantly complain about what AC/Superfly has or hasn't done? Shut up already - those of us that are going understand that you are not going and the resons why - great - that was your choice - but quit trying to rain on our parade.
Obviously those of us that choose to go have our reasons and you have your reasons not to go - but the last time I checked this is InfoROO - it is about Bonnaroo.
I am not saying that you don't have a right to be here just because you choose not to go to Bonnaroo - but give it a rest and quit griping and complaining - leave that to those of us that either have tickets are intend to buy tickets.
I am quite sure I'll end up being smiting for this whole post - won't be the first time and I am damn sure it won't be the last - but my patience is at an end for all the whiney crybabies that want to do nothing but complain about AC/Superfly and Bonnaroo - if you don't like it - don't go - that is your choice - but leave those of us that are going in peace. We (meaning me definately) are sick of hearing you bitch and moan about how bad Bonnaroo is and how great all the other festies are.

on a side note.. it's funny how all these Roo-haters are hyping up Rothbury like it's the best thing since microwaveable macaroni and cheese... I mean, as cool as it COULD be, as a new festival, there is no basis for the godliness that is being thrust upon it.

Nope - it may be a total cluster as a first time festie - but here is another thing - those os us going to Bonnaroo are not over on the Rothbury board talking up about how much it's gonna suck and pointing out everything that could go wrong
i think its a striking fact that most of the people defending roo til the end of the earth and taking about the "roo vibe" are living in the past and have only been to roo. is roo's vibe better then that of everyday society? slightly. but its a far cry from the roo of old, or say all good. if you think the roo vibe is what festie land is about then ya need to get out and explore more. if you have to ask what its all about then ya dont get it yet. it cant be explained, it must be experienced. and its an experience that myself and most people i know, and many fellow inforoosters no longer get from bonnaroo.
i still think its hilarious that there is so much complaining about complaining in the f'in "IM REALLY DISSAPOINTED" thread. just like you arent over on the rothbury board bitchin' why are you in the im so dissapointed thread if your not dissapointed???? just bitchin'? atleast try to stay on topic

thats really surprising to me, because i know a lot of people who go to fests and none of them recieve financial aid from their parents. I would be shocked if those were the actual numbers personally. someone should start a poll or somethign LOL. but then again, it could be just the demographics of where you live and stuff like that. like i said, im in college and pretty much all of my friends live on their own. of course im sure in certain parts of the coutnry that is not the case. But yeah, it would be interesting to see actual numbers.
the only reason that a lot of my friends arent going to roo is because they cant afford it.
also since rothbury doesn't have an established community it makes sense that no one would be on there. there is only like 15 people that post on their anyway. Also as far as the "vets" who arent going complaining. I will admit most of us were bitchingg our donkeys off when the initial lineup was announced but we got over it as other fests were announced and we made up our summer plans, most of us not going don't care anymore. it seems to me the people who are bitching now are the people who have tickets and were non stop speculating about this announcement
Edit: cupcake, if there even was a poll about this you really think people would honestly answer it? Of my friends who I know their parents are paying for it, its not like they are bragging about it. its just that they have no jobs and out of nowhere they all of a sudden have a roo ticket and a plane ticket.

ya those numbers seem way off. at roo, coachella, and lolla maybe. but as far as the festival scene... of which i dont really consider roo, coachella, and lolla a part of the festival scene.... id say the number is far far lower. very few parents are giving their kids thousands of dollars to hit fests. maybe a one time thing for something as well known as roo with recognizable radio bands. it easier to get parents to help out for something they hear about on the radio and cnn. and the mainstream bands theyve actually heard of helps too.
heres what its all about. personally i dont find anything close to it exists at roo anymore. but luckily its still around at many other fests. times change and i guess we all have to change with it. my change will be attending the ledges during roo an you should too ;D
Ol' Billy Jones got a place up in the hills A long hard life of city livinn' and he knew he had his fill. A place for relaxation is all he'd really need. A place where freedom ruled the land and a place to plant a seed.
You know the time it passed by slowly in the hills forever rollin' And music always filled the air from the birds forever callin'. Now Billy he thought long and hard on the name of his hill. He made a sign out of ivy vine and he called it Hookahville.
All good people gather 'round, and they built themselves a peaceful town. If you're tired of the city thrills you can work up in the old sawmill, And follow in the footsteps of ol' Bill, and come to Hookahville.
Billy, he is the head of town and he runs things his own way. You can join the local country club ' cause there ain't no dues to pay. No rules or regulations, live life as you please. Just use a little common sense, don't abuse our land or our trees.
No one here goes hungry, 'cause everyone grows their feed. Barter, it's the way of life, you can trade for all you need. No hassles or bad attitudes is the way we like things here. And the fields grow green, it's the kind that seems to keep us smilin' through the year. Allgood people gather 'round, come on and join our peaceful town. If you need a place where you can chill, just take a swig straight from my still. Follow in the footsteps of ol' Bill, and come to Hookahville.
well im interested and i made a poll about it *shrugs*. of course i dont know if people will be honest. if just goes against a lot of information ive heard. i dont really think its a big deal, like i said, im just interested in some numbers.
ive heard of peoples parents paying fests like coachella, lolla, etc but not roo. i dont know anyone who has been to coachella or lolla so i cannot really confirm or deny anything but thats what ive heard.
i dont wanna make a big deal about it im just curious.
as far as the rothbury board goes (im the admin over there), anyone is free to come on over and post whatever the want.

I think the vibe that a festival gives off is a very personal experience. One person cannot say that the overall vibe of a festival has died or gone to shits... Maybe it has for that person, which is unfortunate, but it happens. Everyone sees things differently though.
I am one of those "newcomers" that has only been to one Roo and loves it and loves the vibe. I realize I wasn't there when it's roots were being planted, and I regret that very much... but just from my personal experience at Roo 07 I thought the vibe was incredible, and I had no hassles with security or mainstream jerk offs that a lot of others had trouble with. So for me, the Roo vibe is incredible. Different from the vibe at Langerado this year, but that's not to say it's necessarily better or worse. Just different. That's why I chose to attend AllGood this year instead of Roo. Besides the financial reasons (which as a college student I pay for myself) I just wanted to seek out a different vibe. Not for comparison's sake... just for myself.
I love the Bonnaroo vibe that I got last year, and I already have a mark on my calendar for Bonaroo 09 (not really a physical mark, per se... ) So long as new people keep coming, the vibe will always be changing. There's nothing you can do to stop it unless you limit ticket sales only to those who have bought tickets in previous years which would absolutely suck. The only thing you can do is embrace it and soak it in for what it's worth. If it's not your thing anymore, then that's why there are hundreds of festivals, big and small, all over the country and world. There's something for everyone out there. For a lot of us, that something is Bonnaroo.
Roo is, has always been, and continues to be about musical variety.
And this SHOULD include who closes out the festival.
I could care less about HOW they announced everything because the announcement was "big" for the fact that it is a first in changing a headliner 2 months after the lineup was announced.
But I do believe there were a lot of people, when the lineup was announced, who were happy that Widespread Panic was not headlining another year.
Variety and moderation in artists between lineups every year is essential to a good festival. Example: If Radiohead headlined a festival 5 out of the 7 times it was held, given enough time, even I would want a change. And I love Radiohead.
"I want you to notice When I'm not around You're so fücking special I wish I was special But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here" -Radiohead
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin
