i think when she says she feels like she "missed" bonnaroo she means that even is she goes next year, it won't be the same... it won't be REALLY bonnaroo (which i'm sure Dude would agree with )
i'm one of those loyal inforoosters who feels like bonnaroo isn't all it once was...
Am I the only person who has been going since the very first year that feels that Bonnaroo is better than it ever has been?
Where was everyone when Disco Biscuits were breaking curfew and ending their set with the sunrise? Where was everyone when MMJ played an epic 4 hour show on an opposite stage? (forcing me to miss a Claypool superjam and DJ throwdown by Tiesto). Where was everyone when Panic headlined for the 7th time (just like in year one), and Pearl Jam played til 1 AM??
I can honestly say that Bonnaroo has far exceeded my expectations of what I thought it could be when I first set foot on that farm in 2002. It has blown the door wide open for American music festivals, and continues to bend and break the rules for festivals in general, all the while stying true to its roots, while infusing the type of cultural and musical diversity that makes this world spin.
This ridiculous assertion that Bonnaroo isn't what it once was is just that to me, ridiculous. As someone who has never missed Bonnaroo, Bonnaroo is, without a doubt, better than it ever has been. The last 3 years have been phenomenal, each of them exceeding the 4 years prior to that. If a few tie-dyed hippies can't get over the fact that Bonnaroo 2002 was the peak of the jamband scene, and that it has been receeding ever since, than so be it. Their nostalgic longing for an era that his since passed us by doesn't lessen the amazing experience that Bonnaroo continues to be.
Dude, karma. The jam band scene is much weaker these days but the spirit isn't. Bands across more genres have adopted the work ethic and attitude towards playing more shows, improvistation, changing setlists, etc that used to be specific to jambands in the 80's and 90's. Hell, we even have metal bands playing jam-format shows these days. Bonnaroo is the granddaddy of big American music festivals. You can compare one to another on merits and drawbacks, but without Bonnaroo, there would be no Langerado, no Rothbury, no 10klf, no Lollapalooza in its current form, no ACL.
i will always be at bonnaroo because of all the "really damn big festivals" its the closest, but i am going to have to make a trek to rothbury eventually, it just seems like my cup of tea.

How have people chosen which festival they are going to without seeing whos playing where? I will love the Atmosphere of both places but I was contemplating going to Rothbury this summer but the lineup had probably 20-30 bands I like where Rothbury only had like 10-15 even though Modest Mouse, Spearhead, and Slightly Stoopid are three of my favorite bands. Bonnaroo was by far the deepest lineup for my taste in music.

That's your opinion about the lineup. I disagree. But either way, it takes a lot more than a great lineup to make an amazing festival

I just waited it out. I was up in the air too. I'm not certain that there is any other way unless you want to just buy a ticket and sell it after the lineups are announced. Gets you in at the lower price but can be a bit of a hassel.
EDIT: Oh and Clarity is dead on. Lolla had my favorite lineup by far but was a lackluster experience in a lot of ways.
Rothbury > Roo08. I know its a matter of opinion but i think its obvious that Roth would win the festi of the year award if there was one. Rothbury set the new standard for the festival experience.

We want to go to both next year. Is Roth going to be over the 4th agian? That might be too close in time to go to both b/c we live on the west coast. If it comes down to picking it will come down to the line up's.
i agree. i don't think i could ever miss roo. did anyone volunteer at rothbury?
i was supposed to volunteer at rothbury working the tollbooth, but when we got there we were sent back and forth all over the place and nobody knew what we were supposed to do. finally we find the right place and got our staff wristbands. when we came back for orientation nobody was there. so we just went into the festival without volunteering.
stayed in a separate campground really close to the main stage. free showers, free breakfast and stuff i think, but i didnt get that cuz i didnt actually volunteer. and staff wristbands pretty much got you anywhere you wanted to be.

This is off the topic of "Rothbury vs Roo" but this post made me think of something... what happens if you sign up to volunteer at a festival but don't show up to your shifts? Its not the "[insert freedom and love filled music festival of your choice that may or may not be 'Roo here] spirit" but I'm sure its happened. Do they reprimand you? Hunt you down and send you home? ???

Depends on the fest. If you get caught you could end up losing your deposit which is the price of the ticket.

i didnt have to put in a deposit. well i did have to pay 25 bucks. i was volunteering through Nomad Supply and working for M&M parking, they do bonnaroo too.
i really did try to volunteer, but i had no idea where or when or who to ask about it. just really unorganized. we actually thought it might be a scam at first. haha. but hey, who wouldnt pay 25 bucks to go to rothbury?

Whichever I decide to goto (pending I cant save up enough money for both to include a comfortable spending allowance from now till then) it will rely a fair amount on the lineup and gas prices. I would love to goto the farm a 3rd time, but I do want to try Rothbury out. If I have to choose between the two however I think it'll be Roo. Im already getting nostalgic
