Hey everyone, this is my second post on a thread and I have to say that I love this one. I power read my way through the 16 pages and I have to say that I've picked up some good advice. My quest to lose weight is motivated in part by the looming prospect that is Bonnaroo and I'm happy to say that throughout the past month and a half I have lost almost 20 pounds. I do have to say in regards to the Master Cleanse that it is a horrible idea. I did it, and my whole digestive system was messed up for about two weeks. It's mainly the salt water that did that. Currently I'm sticking to a strict vegetarian diet with little process foods and I'm also taking kickboxing and running an hour every other day. Hope everyone is sticking to their plans and I can't wait to be looking great and feeling good at my first Bonnaroo!!!
I've had my stomach issues since I was 18. It was diagnosed as IBS, but I'm not completely sure now that's what I have. I was on medication for a while, but it never really seemed to help so I stopped taking it. My doc thinks most of the problem stems from stress, which I agree with, but only to an extent, because my stomach is upset even if when I'm not stressed! I'm used to it now, but I'd like to find a long-term solution. I know fasting isn't a necessarily a long-term solution but it might help me figure out if it's food/beverages that upset it or if my stomach is just that messed up on its own.
have you tried yoga? It's amazing how it can affect every part of you. And if you are often stressed, then maybe your body is still revving even during what you think are your down times. Yoga would help keep your body calm.
Or what about acupuncture? I don't know what sort of health insurance you have, but some are starting to cover it so it's worth looking into.
i'vegotfriends - welcome! karma to you for your good fitness work!!! keep it up girl.
jhointn - i personally wouldn't fast because i've taken food and nutrition at university and know exactly how much your body needs food to operate on a daily basis. especially if you're someone who gets shaky when they don't eat, i can tell you already your body won't like fasting. you probably have low blood sugar, and that's why you need to refuel every couple of hours. have you considered going to a naturopath? they might have some things you could try, modern medicine and western doctors don't always have all the answers. i too suffer from "ibs" although i'm not sure what that even means i don't listen to the label much as it's something they seem to call all stomach problems that they don't have actual answers for.
have you had tests run for other sort of issues? celiacs, chrons, lactose intolerance? those sort of things could be causing you the problem, or perhaps it's just a food allergy. you should keep a journal of what you eat and document when you feel the worst and try to make some connections. but please continue to eat, fasts are gimmicky in my opinion, and your stomach is built to do what it does every single day, the only rest it requires is a healthy balance everyday. i can assure you hunger is not a mental thing, your body requires food each and everyday to allow it to function optimally.
Dcbee: My doc has suggested yoga, but unless he deems it medically necessary, my insurance won't cover it. I like yoga, but I can't afford $10+ per class, yikes! I do try to exercise 3 times a week though.
chawke: I've done the food diary, and they found no rhyme or reason to my stomach problems. I think that's why the diagnosed me with IBS, they couldn't find any other explanation. I've always felt that you know your body better than doctors, so that's why I always take what they say with a grain of salt. I was looking up alternative treatments when I saw that fasting was listed.
Thanks for all of the advice ladies, but I'm going to try the fast for only one day and see how it goes. I've read both sides of the issue, and I know it'll be something I wonder about until I actually do it. And no worries, I will be super careful and take care of myself well before and after. Like I said before, it may not help at all, and if not, then now I know!
this thread is great ladies!! I've been thinking so much about trying to get healthier (and looking good in a swim suit too!) and I don't really have any women around me for encouragement! in fact my boyfriend tells me I don't need to lose weight that I'm beautiful as is (he's a keeper, huh?), but this is the heaviest I've ever weighed in my life. I'm not a gym kind of chic, so can anyone recommend your favorite low fat meal or relatively easy at home exercise? keep on rockin!!!
As far as the meals...I always cut back on meat and add lots of fresh fruits and veggies. And my fave at home exercise is anything I can do in front of the TV. Not like a workout video or anything, but I can turn on the hills and do 30 straight minutes of squats and sit-ups...if you want to do cardio in front of the TV, I would suggest a jump rope (if you have enough room, of course). Yep, I've pretty much mastered the lazy workout. I will say this though: as much as i can pull of a TV work out, there is nothing like going outside and just playing. Whether it's frisbee with your friends or taking the dogs out, that is truly the better workout, physically and mentally

This thread stacked up fast!
I am definitely looking to lose some weight before Roo. However, these days, it always feels like I'm trying to lose weight before something and missing the deadline. Last major deadline was my wedding in Nov. I lost 30 lbs. on Weight Watchers beforehand but that wasn't where I wanted to stop. Alas, I hit a plateau and I've done everything from a month-long, 5 day/week, 1 hr/per bootcamp to spinning to get out of it.
It's rough being a girl. Guys can start sitting on the couch WATCHING ladies in spandex and scrunch sox work out and drop 20. Oh! Did I say too much? Lol. But the support of other ladies and people around you is always appreciated and VERY important in sticking to it.
I, myself, got a Wii Fit this evening and just rocked out 45 min. I was surprisingly sweaty when all was said and done. A little dancy Roo music helped by way of Santogold, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and MGMT. Holler.

i know it's weird, but i seem to work out better when i listen to slower music. i think it's just because the times i exercise are my release, and i'd rather my body be relaxed. in any case, between changing my eating habits and trying to work out at least 3 times a week, i've dropped 15lbs since about february.
i started using the exerciseTV ondemand station for working out and it really helped. it gave me NO excuse to not get at least a power walk or some ab workouts in. i mean, i don't even have to put shoes on or leave my house! they change up the workouts every few weeks, too, so you don't get bored with the same things.
I have that ExerciseTV on demand. They have the 20-minute workouts that are awesome.
yes! some of them have even been too advanced for me and my not-so-in-shape self. one of my friends who's my biggest motivator always asks me if it's a ".fuck you bob!" day every time i do one of the workouts by bob(the one from the biggest loser) i'm always screaming ".fuck you bob!" by the end of it

Insanity, indeed. I have a problem when my weekend is full of errands. You're doing big thangs!!! You're running K's at a time... I walk feet. You're playing two soccer games... I prayed for my kickball league to be disbanded. Believe me, I played third base. That was hard. Thanks for being such an inspiration. Now excuse me, I am feeling the need to take a spin class.

Hey everyone. How are y'all doing?! It is beautiful today in NE Arkansas! I'm finally able to breathe today after a decadron shot and a more antibiotics... I have not been able to drink beer this week since I'm taking a different antibiotic and I've been told that alcohol decreases an antibiotic's potency. Well no beer equals minus 3lbs since Monday. Nice. Mabye I'll stick to this no beer thing until Roo....

I love making this quick dish for me and my boyfriend: cooked whole wheat pasta (like fusilli or penne), combined with a bag of frozen mixed veggies -- we've been using the "Fiesta blend Vegetables" from Kroger's frozen section, has beans for fiber and protein! -- and squirt just enough Kraft Sun-Dried Tomato dressing in the pot with the veggies and pasta to give a light sheen and heat through. Sometimes we mix it up and add another protein in there. I've used vegan brats, pre-cooked chicken strips and italian-style chicken sausage on different occasions.
As for exercise, all I do is hoop and do yoga from the on-demand channel. Hooping is a great workout, especially if you get outside and get into a groove with your hoop! Now, I do a lot of tricks I've learned from the online classes I've taken but even when I was just hooping around my waist I became toned after a while since it requires movement from the whole body.

alessias^^^ a 5k marathon?? is that 5k or a marathon lol!! i'm currently training for a half marathon and have been running about 35k per week it's awesome.... i wish i could play soccer again, i broke my hip when i was 15 and my doctor says something like soccer i could re injure it... just remind yourself you are a competent athlete and you have trained for your races and you will do well!!! let us know how it goes, i would be curious to know your times!
Post by Free Spirit Alessia on Apr 26, 2009 17:00:06 GMT -5
LoL it's a 5k @ a marathon event... I was training for the long island half marathon on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society but b/c I didn't raise enough I am participating in the 10k...again ( I ran it last year also) When is your half?? How long have you been training?
alessias - oh rightttt i think you asked me before and i forgot to answer, sorry!! my half is in September, so i've still got all summer to train. I've been running for about 8 weeks now, i had to work up to actual running because i'm not a runner by nature, this will be my very first race! i started doing 3 cycle classes a week at the gym and lifting weight 3 times per week as well all starting in January. i started feeling strong enough to actually run about 8 weeks ago and have never looked back. i'll be bringing my running shoes to bonnaroo and am hoping to do a quick 5k friday morning while im still in relatively good shape, let me know if you're interested we could run together!!

LoL i'm not a runner by nature either , that is great your first race is going to be a half!!!! Running at bonnaroo... you my friend are hardcore lol I can't imagine running in that heat, but I will def consider it as the time gets closer and let you know. It would probably be a cool experience and we'd get to see a lot of things we would prob miss otherwise.
yes, i think it will be hardcore as well lol, however i wanted to do it pretty early in the morning around 8ish, it shouldn't be too hot out at that time just yet.. i bet we would see A LOT of crazy things!! a lot of bleary eyed people waiting for the portapotties, coupe of stray dazed wooks, those just making their way back to their campsites... and who knows what else!!
Soooooooo today is day 1 with the personal trainer. Ive been saying I was going to get one for the past year but I have finally caved and today is finally the day. I am excited and at the same time a little worred because I may have overdone the partying the last night, but alas its now or never. I told him to put me on a plan thats pretty intense....including a meal plan. He says 21 days and I should be at least back to what I looked like before having my daughter. keep you guys posted on progress and whatnot and hopefully some before and after pictures.
On another note....you guys are doing awesomeand it was actually my inspiration to take this to another level. Thank you all
Hey everyone! Just stopping by to say "hey!" Everyone is doing awesome and I can't wait to see how adorable we all are at Roo!
I've been gone (again!) because life has been nuts! Most of you already know... I bought a new house yesterday! So that has been taking up a ton of my time... but now, I can focus on packing and moving. Buuuuutttt... I'm going to a wedding this weekend in Myrtle Beach, then I am heading to Baton Rouge for my fiance's little sister's vet school graduation the next weekend, then we are heading to Louisville to do some wedding stuff and then Bonnaroo!!!
So, hopefully, I can keep up my routine until then. I am still losing, but it is much more slow than before... but that is to be expected.
I'm so proud of everyone, and keep up the amazing work ladies! We are so kick-ass! ;D

Congrats on the house Dani! Looks like you have a busy few weeks.
Stephie the weather here sucks too. Rain and tstorms all week into next week. How long have you been riding? I have a friend who started a year ago and has transformed. He has lost at least 75lbs. It is awesome exercise! I hope the rain will stop so you can get out and ride!
I guess really not drinking beer works well. I've been doing the 50laps of freestyle a day and no beer and since last post (last week) I've dropped another 2lbs. Hopefully I can keep this up and drop another 10 by Roo. I've set a little reward system up for myself. If I'm at my goal weight after Waka, Roo, Roth then I'll get my roo rings tattoo.
Keep up the good work Ladies! I'm heading to Subway.

The beer thing was really hard. I ended up being told that my antibiotics for sinus infection death weren't working because of my beer intake. I was pretty much forced to stop but I'm happy I did. It really does help and it gets easier to just get some water instead.
I'm getting the roo rings on my left wrist. The first time I went was in 07 so I'm getting the green on bottom and yellow on top since that's the color scheme from the shirts that year.

melissa - that's an awesome idea for a reward!! you will have to post a pic when you get the tattoo!
i've been riding off and on for a little over a year. i really love it and when i get to ride consistently (i bike mostly to/from work and sometimes for fun on the weekends) i can really tell in my upper thighs and i get super energetic!
i'm so glad that we have this wonderful inspiration to stay fit & healthy!! bless you, bonnaroo
