I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooo looking forward to trying out some new pre-roo workout practices beginning next month!
Should I take a bellydancing or hooping class first? I'm wondering if one would better help me to do the other....or if it doesn't even matter
I'm not sure the skills are related, unfortunately...I've taken a number of bellydancing classes and found it pretty easy to get the hang of the movements, but I still can't hoop to save my life

LOL, noted! Maybe I should buy a hoop and try it out before taking a class and embarrassing myself in public...
Do you find you keep up with the bellydancing? Outside of class?

Let me chime in...Sorry that I'm a guy checking out the fitness thread..
Make a hoop for yourself and friends. Do a search on "Making a Hula Hoop". Check out this Link
Ginger (my Wife) and I went to hooping classes last year, what a blast. We have several hoops of all different sizes and weights.
So me, my sister and my parents all just joined weight watchers. I was in weight watchers last year and dropped 20 pounds. I'm hoping to lose 15 more by roo. We are all doing a biggest loser thing. We are weighing ourselves each week, and the three people who are not the biggest loser each give the biggest loser 5 dollars. Hopefully that, and being able to wear a bikini top at all the summer festivals will be enough motivation for me!

I guess so...the moves cross over with the other kinds of dance I do, and I suppose I occasionally bust out a bellydance-style move if I'm dancing at a show. But in terms of doing a bellydance "workout" at home or something like that, not really.

Yeayyyyyyyy I missed everyone!! Haven't been on inforoo since last Roo. I need help so this is my first 2010 post...
I decided as of yesterday to pledge to be a vegetarian for 30 days. Some of you make think, oh that's so easy or whatever, but I am a meat lover..burgers, sausage, steak, chicken...you get the point. The reason why I even got the idea to do it is because I read the book "Skinny Bitch" and in this book they go into extreme detail about slaughter houses and everything and it really opened my eyes and actually freaked me out enough to consider changing my lifestyle. So switching from a meat eater to a non meat eater is kind of overwhelming and I was wondering if there are any of you out there who are vegetarians and if you can suggest any foods for me to try to make this journey easier?
I need to practice like crazy though. But, I was tired and hot and hungry after 90 minutes, so something is going right.
That sounds like a total setup for a "That's what she said" but I can t make it work...
Glad you liked it!
OK this is gonna be a stupid question...but what did you do in the class? Did they start out pretty basic? I'm worried I'll show up and be surrounded by hoopy pros.

Oh no, it was very basic. There were a couple people in the class who were repeating the series, but for the most part it was beginners or self-taught hoopers.
We learned how to "brake" from both sides, how to hoop in our non-dominant direction, how to spiral (turn while hooping), howto walk while hooping and how to snake (hoop with both arms at your sides). It was really basic things, and I still have to practice like mad... those moves just do not come naturally to me. But, yeah, everyone was dropping their hoops, laughing and having fun. Not intimidating at all.

I am not a vegetarian, but my sister (alieblue on here) is and went from being a meat-eater to a vegetarian without any real notice so you could PM her (though she isn't on that often).
Good sorces of protein are chickpeas, quinoa and, of course, beans and soy-meat products. My sister made chili with fake meat at a party she had last year and didn't tell anyone - and no one noticed at all. Eggs are also good if you're not going vegan (though I have heard that if it's the way they're treated that's getting you, eggs are possibly the worst thing to eat). There's no rule that you can't have omelettes or a strata at dinner. With a big salad? Mmmmmm.
Barefoot Contessa has an awesome spinach pie that I've served as a vegetarian main course.
After you've gotten used to eating less meat, you could research places near you to get humanely raised and killed meat. In the summer, there's a stand at my local farmer's market where you place an order online a few days ahead of time and then pick it up on Sunday.
In a similar vein: In October, I made a deal with myself to not eat ice cream for a month. I was in the habit of buying a pint or two a week and often would eat the whole thing in one setting. I have very little control over ice cream when it's in the house and had a hard time not buying it when I was at the store.
After that month, I didn't crave it anymore. I sometimes still go down the ice cream aisle and stare at all of the choices, but walk away empty-handed.
This month, my goal is to avoid excessive dairy. I still have a hunk of parmesan in the fridge from Christmas dishes and things like that, but I'm not going to bring anything else into the house and will do what I can to avoid it when eating out.

There are several farms in middle TN that sell humanely-raised meat. I personally think this is a much better plan than eliminating meat altogether, especially if the only thing getting to you is the treatment of the animals. It will be more expensive but worth it. I would recommend doing this research in your area, freespirit!

dcbee, I did this with sweets in general. Now I hardly eat them at all! Over the holidays, I only had one dessert with of all the meals I consumed! But sometimes I do get a craving for something sweet and when I do eat it, I end up eating a lot less because it's soooo sweet and rich since I'm not used to it.
Good luck with the dairy plan! Cheese is my #1 food group so there is no way I could ever do that

this is something we have started to do as well - in MA.
it's not so much the "meat is murder" that i have a problem with, but have you seen pictures of those giant meat processing plants with the pens outside? wow... not what i would call appetizing.
it helps if you can limit the amount of meat you eat if you make such a switch. that local steak is easily double what you pay at megamart....
it's tricky to really cut out meat, since it's served breakfast, lunch, and dinner....almost everywhere you go.
(I spend A LOT of time with my sister so feel like I can sorta talk for her)
For the most part, it's just a matter of speaking up. Ask how the food is prepared - does this soup use chicken or vegetable stock? Can I get the salad without the bacon sprinkles? Can you leave the ham off my Egg McMuffin? Going to dinner at someone else's house? Let them know as much in advance as possible and be prepared to just eat bread with a smile on your face.
Back to being me - I don't find it a problem at all hosting them. Christmas Eve I made an awesome butternut squash lasagna served with a big salad and bread and then had deviled eggs for appetizer. (Lasagna was SO not healthy, but if anyone wants the recipe, just PM me!)

Thanks you so much dcbee I really appreciate it! I'm trying to go vegan as much as I can, where I can. Today is only my third day and I really do feel a lot better. Usually I get bad stomach pains after every time I eat, I haven't had one yet! I am/was a real junk food, fast food, vegetable hater and everything bad for you eater so this is a complete change for me. My main this is reading labels now, not for calories and fat but for the ingredients. if I don't know what something is, I wont buy it. I'm going for all natural/organic, vegetarian, and like i said vegan when I can. I'm hoping this is something i can stick to and that I see some weight loss results from it as well.
I wish everyone good luck on any new weight loss/eating journeys they are embarking on. I feel like I've been dieting since age 12 so after 13 years of it I'm ready to have one less thing to worry about and finally just do what I need to do to get to the point where I am happy with myself as a whole.
I started training again for the Long Island Marathon, I'm shooting for the half this year (I have ran the 10k the past 2 years) if anyone is interested in getting into running I HAVE to suggest the Couch 2 5k program. It starts you from running a minute walking for 2 minutes, and eventually running a complete 5k over a few weeks time I use it every year to get back into running, you can find the program here : www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml (also if you have an ipod or iphone they have a C25K app that i use every time I run, it has a timer and voice to tell you when to run and when to walk and it allows you to play your own music during it!)
A FIBER OPTIC HOOP?!!! You have no idea how amazing those words are to me! ;DI love fiber optic things - a fiber optic hoop sounds incredibly awesome! Do you have any idea where they found it? I would greatly appreciate it, if you could find out.
Lucky you, that's a great present!
And Happy Holidays to you all!
Bah, my mom was confused. It is *just* and LED hoop, but here is the link cosmichooper.com/ I love this guys hoops and cannot wait for mine to arrive! ;D
So, I've avoided this thread for awhile as I half-assed attempted to lose weight (didn't work btw). But I finally buckled down and started counting calories religiously and lost 7 lbs since mid-November. I took off Christmas-New Years with a goal of just not gaining, which worked. And I've decided to join a yoga studio. First class is next week! Super-duper excited for a new me. Healthy in and out.

i've been working out with a personal trainer. i go twice a week for an hour, and it's a small group training session as opposed to one-on-one training. i have to say it is the BEST thing that ever happened to me. they are 12 week sessions, and i'm currently two weeks in to my second 12 weeks. i've lost 20lbs so far, and i'm hoping to lose another 30 this time around.
however, for those trying to lose weight, the best thing i can tell you is to TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE. when i first started with my training, i was getting discouraged at the numbers on the scale. but after 3 weeks we took my measurements, and i'd lost at least 2 inches on neck/bust/stomach/hips, if not more. i'm down one jean/dress size, and am probably close to being down 2 sizes.
also...WATER WATER WATER. you will be amazed at how much more quickly the pounds are shed when you drink more water. i buy the 1.5L ozarka bottles, then refill that all day. i make myself finish so much of it before having my next bit of food. that way i'm more full, and sometimes forget about wanting to snack all together.
any routine you use to lose weight has to be a lifestyle change, though. while the pounds may not come off as quickly as you'd like, they will STAY off if you do it the right way. and diet is going to affect your weight loss IMMENSELY. you can workout at the gym for 2 hours, but if you stop by mcdonalds on your way home, you're not doing yourself any good.

i have a new salad recipe for those of us who are already tired of eating salad. my friend from argentina eats this almost every day. its great with beef but can be eaten with soup as well.
take two kinds of lettuce or greens. one needs to be dark such as kale or spinach tomato onion olive oil salt lemon or lemon juice
shread lettuce, tomato, and onion (onion is optional) into really really small pieces. put on a slight amount of salt and olive oil. (use a SMALL amount of salt and olive oil - it should not be like dressing - you should not be able to see it on the lettuce). once its mixed squeeze or pour on some lemon and toss again. put a tad more salt on it. thats it!
remember thatyou are only uses a tad of olive oil and salt so its very healthy. you dont need any dressing with this salad. eat it plain.
you can add mandrian oranges or pecans if you want. my friend adds cheese and bacon but that makes it "not a diet salad"

LED hoops are awesome too! ...I just have an strange attraction to fiber optics ...but any thing that glows is pretty swell with me. Hooprama has 1 class courses for building certain skills & tricks, and they have an LED course that I'm dying to do, but I have to complete level 2 first!
