Thanks for the history lesson on Bonnaroo and for informing me it's apparently ONLY about Phish if they do come.
Yeah, like I said it's a toss-up because of the festy crowd. Phish are huge in that respect. I don't know what you're disagreeing with.
Big picture, Springsteen is definitely bigger than Phish. Maybe not in your world, but outside of jambandland he is a living legend that sells out everywhere he plays and he's been doing it for 30+ years.
I'm 100% a Phish fan since my first run of shows in 1994.
That said, you're right.
Springsteen is WAY bigger than Phish and his fans are PASSIONATE. Sure Phish is a draw for pholks like us. But you're totally underestimating Springsteen fans if you don't think he can do the same.
Bruce is a legend. Phish are a mere caricature of themselves.
not when it comes to Bonnaroo or festies. Springsteen would never draw 100k people to the middle of the Everglades. And that was without being broken up for two years. Phish built the mold that Bonnaroo was created from. Bonnaroo was born out of a scene that Phish pretty much spearheaded. I know a lot of people want to see the mainstream artists now, but when Bonnaroo began, it wasn't about that.
the thing is... Phish has the power to draw a crowd the size of Bonnaroo by doing their own fest where they are the ONLY band that plays. That is why Phish never played Bonnaroo in the past when they were still together. When they broke up, they also broke up what was Phish Inc. So all of the people that were paid by Phish to create Phish festivals no longer work for Phish. It is easier now, or at least FOR NOW to just play Bonnaroo, rather than do their own fest.
Bottom line... if Phish plays Bonnaroo... this will be Phish's festival. Doesn't matter whether they play Friday or Saturday or Sunday... this WILL be Phish's festival.

i am just saying that bonnaroo is phish's type of world. phish fans would HATE the thought of having to see Phish in a stadium because everyone knows that stadium concerts sound like crap. that being said... i've seen several stadium shows in my life and the best sounding stadium show i ever saw was at the giants stadium.
i am well aware of springsteen's career and his audience. i have worked in the music business for 20+ years, so my world isn't "jambandland" and i actually don't like many jambands other than phish. by the way, springsteen played 3 venues in florida in 2008. the venues were about 17k seaters and none of them sold out.
anyway, i am not disagreeing that springsteen is "bigger" than phish. yes... he's been around a lot longer and he enjoyed huge mainstream top 40 success in the 80s. he is rock and roll royalty. springsteen is from NJ and can do very well playing multiple nights in the NJ/NY market. but when it comes to traveling to a camping music festival in the middle of the summer int he middle of nowhere in tennessee... it is hard to find a more perfect band for that situation than phish. this festival was designed around the festivals that phish had been putting on themselves annually. and those festivals were always in the middle of nowhere... big cypress indian reservation in the everglades in florida... limestone, maine... coventry, vermont. you have to REALLY want to get to these places. only the most rabid springsteen fans would pay for a weekend ticket to see springsteen play in the middle of nowhere the average fan who knows about 5 or 6 springsteen songs will just wait until they can pay that same amount of money for a good seat in a nice clean venue where they don't have to deal with hours of traffic and they don't have to set up a tent.
that's all i am saying. personally, i am very much looking forward to seeing springsteen. i've only seen him once and it was a LONG time ago. maybe like 90 or 91?
phish... springsteen... david byrne? sounds like a great bonnaroo to me.

Yeah and he would never sell out 7 almost consecutive nights at the Meadowlands either.
Oh wait. He already did that in 2003.
I mean thats what only 500,000 seats?
i didn't say he would never sell out 7 almost consecutive nights at the meadowlands. that's very impressive. a lot of people went to multiple nights, of course, but still extremely impressive and there aren't many other artists (if any) that can do that.
but... if you put giants stadium in the middle of the everglades (where the closest airport is easily 2-3 hours away), remove every seat, remove any hotels within 1-2 hour drive... and add anywhere from 5-10 hours worth of traffic... is he going to draw 500,000 people? that is all i am saying.
fishingmaniac... the reason i don't think springsteen could take over bonnaroo like phish can, besides the reasons i have already stated with bonnaroo being more of a phish-friendly setting than for springsteen is that springsteen played three arenas in florida last year and none of the shows sold out. and they weren't multiple night runs, it was one show in each venue.

Not 500,000 (I'll give you that) but without a doubt 100,000 + . Springsteen fans are rabid. Much like Phish fans. You have to figure that even in the 'glades that there are more Springsteen fans than Phish fans giving the area and proximity to Miami/Ft. Laderdale on the east and Tampa on the west. There are totally more than 100k. Not counting the markets in Georgia.
I'm not saying this festival wasn't tailored for Phish. (and I personally want them there for two nights) but you are vastly underestimating the power of The Boss.
But the issue is Bonnaroo not Big Cypress. There is an airport and there are hotels (if they want).
Not picking a fight .. I just don't get how people think Phish > Springsteen.

haha... not many people live in the Everglades. It's a National Park. There is a Seminole Indian Reservation in the Everglades, but nobody else besides the gators, fish (???), panthers, birds, etc live there.
I get what you're saying though...
Phish didn't really pack the Everglades with fans from Miami, Ft lauderdale, or Tampa. They packed the Everglades with fans that came from all over the US... and possibly the world. I met a group of kids who flew in from Japan at Coventry. If Springsteen couldn't sell out 18K seats in South Florida with all of the New Yorkers that now live in South Florida, then I don't think many of those people would drive out to the middle of the swamp to see him. Same goes for Tampa. He couldn't sell out same size venue there either. And Springsteen's fans (in general) are older and aren't about to travel to put up with the hassle of a festival. With Phish fans, they can't wait. They've been waiting for a Phish festival for 5 years and a lot of them already go to Bonnaroo every year. Most have been at least once. Most Springsteen fans have never heard of Manchester, TN and have never heard of most of the "other" bands playing.
I feel like I'm just explaining myself 5 different ways now... there's no point. I'm not trying to pick a fight either. I'm just making conversation now.
If Phish and Springsteen play, Bonnaroo will sell out. It will make for the best headliners the festival has EVER seen and it will be the first time a Bonnaroo happens where the president isn't George W Bush. Even if I get laid off between now and then... it will still be good times.
Bring on the boss !! Not a huge fan actually but have enjoyed him for many years now and saw him back in the early 80's. Much more a Phish, Dead, etc...kind of a guy but the boss will bring a nice change to the fest. His set will no doubt be epic and most likely will include as many guest spots as Bruce will allow. If the Dead is also on the bill ticket sales will be monumentous and it'll sell out way earlier than most people will be ready for. Get your tics soon...
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
beck covering creep at roo 06 and roots covering roxane is 2 that come to mind i would say more likely phish covering bruce they do the best covers imo

*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
That would be interesting, but I don't think I've ever heard one performer do a cover from another performer that was at the same festival.
I could see Bruce performing some of his songs with Phish though. What songs do you think they would play?
I would like to see them do She's the one, Jungleland, Rosalita, backstreets, even Thunder road and born to run they obviously COULD do any song they wanted talent-wise. Yes I know old school Bruce songs but that's what I grew up on and like. The Seegar sessions stuff he did recently was pretty cool also....worth a listen if you are unaware.

i think odds are better of David Byrne being onstage with Phish... although I could see Trey joining the Boss.
is Bruce the type to special guest on someone else's stage or to have special guests on his own stage? can any hardcore fans answer that?
Yes Bruce is exactly the kind of guy that likes to share the stage with other performers. There's been a couple of youtube linked here somewhere. One was with Tom Morello doing "Ghost of Tom Joad" another doing a couple songs with Arctic Fire. When I saw him last year he had Roger McQuinn come on and do a couple of The Byrds' songs.
I've never known of Bruce going onstage with other bands. I don't doubt he would. One thing against him joining Phish is that if he plays Friday night. He could well be gone by the time Phish plays
Did anyone catch Bruce doing "This Land Is Your Land" with Pete Seeger at today's concert at the Lincoln Memorial? So moving. Seeger will be at JazzFest and I'm hoping Bruce gets announced as the second TBA for second weekend and that they'll perform together for at least a few songs!

edgecrusher in the bonnaroo speculation thread posted that he spent the weekend with somebody involved with AC bookings and said Springsteen is Friday Headliner followed by a midnight Phish show, and Saturday has a new headliner, while Phish closes Sunday out. Who is going to be bigger than Springsteen and Phish to take Saturday?
^^^ He also said that they were "funky" which doesn't leave a lot of options. Who is both funky and as big as if not bigger than Springsteen and Phish?

I think MMJ would be perfect to go on right before Springsteen. It would fit their Bonnaroo path, as it were, now pre-headlining on the What Stage before headlining a night themselves in (probably) the nest three years.
They could do it kinda like Jack>PJ last year. MMJ can go from about 6 to 8; Springsteen can go on at 9ish and play until after midnight.

It looked like DC was well worth the cold today (on a political end, I think Baltimore yesterday would have been, too). I'm jealous of everybody who got to be a part of all that.
Hmm. Wonder if that Saturday headliner could be Prince?!?
I considered going in for the concert today, but I woke up with a small hangover and that, combined with the cold and crowds, kept me home. I do have to head in tomorrow for a few days though...going to the parade (indoors, thankfully) and a ball. It's a great time to be in DC. And to be an American, really.
