I've been home visiting my parents who live in the country beside a river. Every day I've taken the dogs out for a walk on it or the snowcat trail in our woods. Today my dad and I jogged four miles in the cold on a greenway along the river. Winter is no excuse to not get out and be active. I'm doing all of this in North Dakota haha. I also finally gave up energy drinks which was hard to do but I'm maintaining with black coffee and caffeine pills. I hope everyone is working towards healthiness!
I have needed motivation to lose some weight for quite a while and figured that 'Roo would be as good an incentive as any. My main problem is going to be balancing my time and choosing healthy meal choices over fast food because I work full time and go to school full time online so it is going to be a struggle but I am deadset on living healthier. We will see how it goes!

I've been stuck for a few months now. Just stuck. I've biked 32k so far this week, and I've done 2 days of weights already. But then I had some taters stars and wine. Damn me.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

My problem definitely is diet over working out.I love to lift weights, love to run, and I play hockey 3-4 times a week. But I love to eat. MyFitnessPal is a great tool to use on your phone.

Gotta second the MyFitnessPal call on this one. It is a fantastic app/website.
Been dieting since Monday. Trying to lose 10 lbs before the 21st, and 30 lbs by Wanee.
I cut carbs to almost zero and increased my veggie intake by a lot to make up for it. Rutabaga is awesome. It's a vegetable that tastes like a starch. Helps with my cravings. Also, cut fats down a lot too. So my meals consist of mainly lean meats and seafood, and steamed veggies with seasonings and "I can't believe it's not butter" spritz
Good luck to all of you. I'm downloading MyFitnessPal right now. Thanks for the suggestion. I have stopped drinking soda once again, I'm getting back into walking my old running route, and using the elliptical when I can't walk. Here's to a fitter & healthier 2013!

I have weaned myself off soda (again) as well. The next step is to step down off of sweet tea. I think I add a ton of calories based off of drinks alone.

I truly believe that is my main problem & would make a world of difference. Talk about addiction.

I don't know if it is my main problem, but it is certainly a big one. I need to stop drinking them and keep from drinking them. I don't know if it is the sugar or caffeine or what, but every time I stop drinking them, I get a massive headache that lasts for an entire day. That should be enough to tell me that it is a bad idea to drink them, but apparently not since I keep going back.

I work two jobs that, depending on the week, equal out to 65-100 hours per week. When I am doing well, I do a lot of cooking/ prep work on a night off (Sunday night for me). I'll bake a bunch of chicken in two flavors, chop a big thing of veggies and store it with lots of paper towels to toss on top of spinach for last minute salads, hard boil some eggs... Planning and cooking ahead is a LIFE SAVER when it comes to eating healthy with a busy schedule. Weeks that I don't do that, I fail. I order food at my restaurant part-time job, I grab high preservative frozen meals (and those on my good bad days )

Welcome to the thread, Surfy boy! Butter is horrible for you, but most people don't usually worry too much about the fat content in things (ie nuts, avocados, etc.). I should clarify, the best eaters actually eat relatively high in HEALTHY fat
I've started my busy season at my day job (ie. an extra 20 hours a week for the next 2+ months), which is actually great for a good diet. I don't have a lunch break and I end up staying late here and there, so ALL of my daytime and most of my early evening meals have to be planned. I've made a few bad decisions at Cheesecake, but overall, I've had the best week that I've had in awhile. Big spinach salads for lunch every day, snacks of apples, FF refried beans with extra jalapenos and cilantro, sliced turkey... Feeling relatively positive!!! Just in time too because my work pants are definitely too tight. The pants that were getting too big in the beginning of the summer are barely wearable right now
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I second the MyFitnessPal app. My mom and sister use it and lost a lot of weight, because you become aware of what the caloric intake and fat and sugar content of everything you eat.
Also, if you just cut out white carbs and pop, you will see a difference in your body (weight), and energy level, in a week.
Don't drink soda, don't eat 3 hours before you go to bed. You'll wake up with more energy and will finish it with more energy.
I found my old George Foreman grill, so now it's going to be veggies and grilled chicken until I can run 3 miles without wanting to die. Should be fun.

I have owned one for about 5 years- a hand-me-down. I have never even turned it on! Maybe one day..

Another one that is really difficult for me to follow even though there's no real argument that it isn't a good idea.
This was the hardest habit of mine to crack, by a mile.
I love me some ice cream, it's pretty much the only sweet I like and will eat more than once a month (don't like chocolate, don't like overly sweet frosted treats - seriously, those super nice and expensive cup cakes give me stomach aches they have so much sugar). I never really saw the harm in eating a bowl of ice cream, finishing the show/game I was watching or chapter I was reading and going to bed. But I woudl also wake up tired and when you're constantly starting the day one foot dragging behind you, to me it would just snowball into an entire day of being lethargic and not on top of my game.
Being the insane person that I am, I would literally yell at myself in my head when I thought about eating late. Eventually I stopped wanting to and now if I eat a late night snack once every 2 weeks it's a lot.
Anyone have a good sand guy? I need to fill sandbags so I can freak my neighbors out when I throw them against the concrete wall behind my building.
I have owned one for about 5 years- a hand-me-down. I have never even turned it on! Maybe one day..
I like it because I don't cook for anyone else, so setting up the assembly line for a big tray of chicken isn't that feasible (I always tell myself "I'll freeze it and use it later!" but I always end up wasting some). I can cook a piece of chicken while I steam some veggies and have a meal ready in like 5 minutes.
Also, in college we saved the fat from cooking burgers on it and stored it in a bucket that we dumped on our friend as payback for breaking out TV and not replacing it. So, there's that.

It is not bad to eat before bed. Lets end that myth right now.
What is important, however, is what you eat before bed.
I eat cottage cheese literally 15 minutes before I go to bed. The casein protein in it is a slow dissolving protein and breaks down slowly throughout the night. Veggies are also OK before bed.
But things like bread before bed is a bad idea, or carbs in general.
You're dead on about the soda though. People don't realize how much worse sugar is for you than fat.
Speaking of carbs, don't be afraid of them, no matter what diet you are on. Just know when to eat them. As long as you eat them within an hour (or less) of a workout, they are not only not bad for you, but actually good for your body during this time of recovery.

Actually I'm taught to cook enough so you always have extra. I live on leftovers. I almost always cook at least a pound of chicken at a time.- and eat it all. When I have cooked chicken in the fridge, I tend to eat it non stop- on top of salads for lunch, heated up for dinner.... aaaand cold finger food as snacks walking by the fridge.

Yes, but since most people don't eat health food right before bed, I skipped discussing that. Most people that are trying to lose weight have bad eating habits which include late-night snacking (not of the carrot/celery variety).
But you're right, there are definitely certain foods that are good for you that you can snack on, I just found that if you open that door to people trying to change their lifestyle it leads to more cheating than if you just draw the line in the sand and tell them they shouldn't cross it.
Edit: And bonz, the GF grill can bang out a pound of chicken easily, I just like it because it's easy to use for small portions. I find that if I cook a lot, I eat a lot. But if I cook a little, I eat a little and realize I'm actually full once I give myself a chance to digest.

Planning leftovers is also a great way to ensure you eat a healthy lunch the next day.
I always cook enough for two meals at supper time, so it leaves me with a lunch already made to take to work the next day.
This prevents me from being lazy and not making a lunch in the morning, and buying an unhealthy lunch instead.

I just finished reading Hanson's Marathon Method. Book was fantastic and let me in on a lot of knowledge I didnt realize before.
First off, a mile is a mile calorically whether you're running at an 11 minute pace or a 7 minute pace. The difference is slight. What really changes is how much fat/carbs you're burning. The faster you go the more carbs are being burned from your available amount and the less fat is being burned. Slow down and the ratio starts going after your fat stores. Knowing that just go at the pace that's comfortable and work your way up to being able to move for 50 or 60 minutes. You'll see huge leaps and gains!
Also, if you're just getting started be careful. It takes time for your body to adjust. If you are running or jogging a few times a week once you get to 7 or 8 miles a week remember to increase no more than 20 or 25%. Losing time when youre just getting started will end up taking back a long ways.
Each day is a chance to try for an improvement, but dont get caught up in being perfect. It gets easier with time and practice on both eating and working out.
And like Bonz. I usually set aside one afternoon on the weekends and prep a ton of veggies and stuff for the next week or at least go shopping so I have healthy choices in the fridge for hte next week. When you're out of food youre going to go out or order. Which is fine, but save those days for when you're doing it with friends.
I want some of this action! So here goes, I am with you Surf, ~30 pounds by Roo. About two months ago, I did a weight loss challenge at work. I won! ;D Well we compromised, I won though ;D. I lost 22 pounds, but the Holidays killed that. It is my own fault, I made the holidays an excuse to eat whatever, whenever, and drink soda. I gained half my weight back. Again, a few of us are doing another weight loss challenge that started last week. I have cut out soda already, that was easier this time. Dave, switch to green sweet tea and then wean off that. Also, apple juice, OJ and all juices have shit tons of sugar. I think one cup of apple juice is like eating 3-4 apples. Drinking a glass of apple juice is like eating 10 apples, with none of the fiber. Once you get over that "headache" you are home free. No more HA! Get some ibuprofen and prepare to fistfuck that headache. (yes, fistfuck is the word of the day.) I am with you Flaz, I love Ice Cream! Have you tried frozen yogurt? You probably do not have a Publix in your area(they have great low fat frozen yogurt-Chocolate Quarry!)? I find it to be damn close to ice cream.
Here I am:
Weigh-in: 232 lbs Current Endurance: I break a sweat in the shower, which means I can not even jog a mile.
My Goals:
By the end of January, weigh below 225, run/jog 1 mile without stopping
Birthday(4/18), aka Wanee, below 210lbs
By Roo, below 200 and to be able to run 2 miles.
By December 31, 2013 - be in the best shape of my life and have completed or signed up for, my first Marathon
The Diet Plan:
No Soda!! and lay off the sugar drinks
No Fast Food, that is a given
No Dessert/Sweets/Candy - I do allow myself some of Publix's frozen yogurt
No White bread, White rice, White sugar, White potatoes, White pasta, NO White ream garlic butter sauce(or anything in that HEAVY family) and NO more White Lighting*
No Pizza, unless it is home made or from Satchel's in Gainesville, No Chinese Food-"NY style take out", there is a place in G'ville called Chopsticks. so good!
No Eating 3 hours before bed - This will be HARD.
Exercise Plan:
I have P90X, it is still in the box. It will be used.
There are walking/running trails 2 miles from my house and perfect to go to after work
Bike trails are also on the way home. Santos Trails
this plan is in the works
Three parts, First, develop a diet plan to reach my goals, Next, develop an exercise plan to reach my goals, and last start a support group to achieve my goals. For the last part, I ask for your support, if I am posting in here, I am on target. If I am not posting in here I am off target, FAILING, and do not want to talk about it. If that is the case I ask for a PM to tell me to get my fat ass in gear! none of this nice sh!t either, If I fail to post in here once/week, I ask someone to send me a PM and let me have it. Yell at me. Let it out! I want football coach, in your face, Juillan Micheal style, GET YOUR FAT ASS BACK TO WORK!!! pm, please. Matter of fact, as I type this, it starts to sound like a better and better idea. Would anybody be interested in an Inforoo Fat Ass Support Group? I am being serious, it could be a weight loss support group. You chime in once/week and give an update, aka therapy, if you fail to do that, we get to send you a "friendly reminder". Of course it does not have to be as I described above, that is what I want. For others, a more positive, encouraging PM could be sent.
