Ugh.. I had some leg pain while on my run yesterday. I've been battling a nagging stress fracture for over a year now and have just been back to 100% these past couple months. Even the slightest twinge of pain is enough to send me into a full blown panic attack, especially when I have a race this weekend. Hopefully a day of rest and an ice bath gets it back in order.
I know what you mean about the slightest twinge making you worry. As soon as I feel it in my knee I wonder if I should stop my run right there and give it a rest. Hopefully it's just that, a twinge, and a little ice bath gets you back to perfect for your race!
we're having a weeklong library celebration next week, our version of NLW, and of course it all involves food bc that's the way you involve college students
in the various events: cake on monday, cookies/lemonade on tuesday and wednesday, thursday won't be so bad because i think a deli tray is included on which i will go to town, and friday is gonna be a beast with candy, chips, pizza, and soda available all day long and i'm working until 8.
i might need write motivational shit on my hand to stop me if i break and reach for something.
Just eat before you go and drink plenty of water while you're there. I'd wait until they're almost out of stuff and then grab a cake! The one won't hurt, it's just when you start overdoing it when it's a problem. If you're like me I can't just have one cookie, so I try to wait until there's only one left haha
Or this can be a big test for you and you just avoid them all together. It may look all shiny and tasty but usually it's never as good as it looks. Just keep telling yourself that when your reach for it. "It won't be that good....why even bother"
Token that's awesome that you have gone so long without sweets! And rather inspiring. I should try and do the same.
It was pretty easy after the first 3 days. It's weird how depressed I got but once that passed I was fine. You should try it out. I love doing things to challenge myself and see if I can do it. I'm trying to find a happy place for sweets in my life. I love them but they are killing me.
I'm sure you guys are tired of hearing me say that I fell off the wagon, but this is the only place where I feel accountable. But yes, I fell off again last week. Went back to the gym on Saturday after 5 days off. I ate my salad and fruit and yogurt today so I'm back on track. REALLY hope that there are no more family crises in the near future so I can stay on track and lose a few more pounds.

At least you got back on the horse. I think those stressful times are the hardest part for many. For me personally, I had a lot of movement/chaos going on when I was much younger which I have pretty much figured out is the source of a lot of my food issues. I didn't have much that felt constant to me, and food filled that need for me which was the genesis of my weight issues. Years and years later, there is still that pull to just consume something during any time of emotional unrest. Stressed? Eat. Bored? Eat. Mad? Eat. Happy? Eat. Don't be discouraged in the lapses you have because of stress. If you are anything like me, you are fighting against years of internal programming. That's hard, long work, and mistakes are going to be made. You were honest about it, admitted it and got back on track which is a great step in and of itself.

My half marathon is coming up in about 20 days..I'm winding down the training from here on out, which to me is always the hardest part of race training since I start feeling anxious and out of shape!
Woot - down another kilo this week! Was definitely not expecting that after a Saturday night that involved way too much booze followed by some 3am fast food.
Down 15lbs since mid-January! It's actually a bit more than I wanted to lose, which means I either I lost some muscle or didn't gain as much muscle during the winter months as I originally thought. Oh well lol.

what half are you doing?!?!?!? my next one is in november in texas (shiner beer run!)

I'm running the Russvegas Half Marathon in Russellville, its going to be my first half marathon I've raced, even though I've done some marathons before....how many half marathons have you done??
I haven't done that one. The next one will be my 3rd. Fuck a full though lol jk I was training for the little rock marathon last summer when I got diagnosed with migraines/vertigo. I had to quit running or even exercising until they figured out what was wrong.
I felt drunk all the time, for free, but I didn't feel well. It was awful. My daily migraine pill helped me put on 20 lbs. So I'm working on getting that off. #chunkyforlife

If you want to get rid of headaches/migraines, apples are really good, and they don't have any bad side affects. There's a documentary called "fat, sick, and nearly dead", in which a lady has suffered from migraines and cured them by juicing. It's on netflix. I'm not saying don't take your meds but they usually just mask the problem instead of fixing it. The problem will only get worse until you get to the root of the problem.
"Low Fat" versions of foods are typically less healthy because of what they put in to create the texture and flavor of the full-fat versions. It's also not particularly healthy to replace fats with tons of carbs + sugars. When you're eating stabilizers, texturizers, plastizers, sugar and preservatives instead of fat... well you get the picture.
I agree about low fat versions of food but a low fat diet is important because fat makes you fat. Carbs are the most important food to consume. Without carbs you won't have any energy which is why the Atkins and Paleo diet leave people tired, the creators are fat and or dead. Of course I'm not referring to processed carbs, but fruit is key. Gorillas and chimps eat mainly a fruit diet and they're very strong. I know some fruitarians and they're world class athletes. Check out a website www.30bananasaday.com. I personally find a high fruit/carb diet and low protein and fat diet, to keep me the leanest and feel the healthiest and most energetic. It's only when I stray from this is when I gain weight and have less energy.
I had a goal of 30 5ks before I turned 30 but i might not make it. And thanks! I never thought I'd be a runner. It gets addictive feeling like a total badass.
And I know the juicing Netflix movie you're referring to. The pills don't help but they keep most of it at bay. I have migraine equivalent which is like a migraine except I have normal headaches with temporary vertigo. I see a neurologist every 3-4 months to keep an eye on it though.

i haven't felt particularly tired doing paleo - i actually feel pretty good, and have had good results thus far. i eat the hell out of some fruit, though.
my lil bro leaned down a LOT on the paleo diet, probably a good 25 lbs or so, and that's what prompted me to try it.

Eating fat doesn't make you fat. Eating more calories than you burn makes you fat.
I eat paleo and I have significantly more energy than my peers. Lack of energy comes from lack of sleep. Many people compensate for tiredness with diets high in sugar, carbs and caffeine. It is a vicious cycle, they get more tired, so are up later finishing tasks, so eat more junk, so get less sleep, etc...
Fat is good for you. I'm not saying to eat a Big Mac, but natural fats are nutritious. As far as gorillas, while there is one species that eats a heavy fruit diet, quite a few barely eat fruit, and subsist largely on plant matter and insects. We are not the only species with an odd diet relative. There are closely related parrot species where one lives on fruit, and another lives on seeds and plants. I wouldn't personally advocate a fruitivore diet.

Calories are not created equal. That's something that a lot of people fail to realize. Lack of energy comes from lack of sugar. Of course sleep is important, the same as exercise(move it or lose it). I know some people on a Paleo diet that are fit but they drink coffee daily. Obviously we're not all the same so we'll have different results. I agree, fat is good for you and important for brain function. Avocados and nuts are a great source but too much can definitely make you fat, same as protein. I can eat 20-30 pieces of fruit a day and not gain any weight and be supercharged full of energy. I know a decent amount of frugivores(mainly fruit diet) and they are ridiculous fit, not one is over weight and they eat 20-30 pieces of fruit for a meal. Personally I've messed around with a ton of different diets and find that a mostly fruit diet gives me the best results. I find that meat bogs me down and dairy makes me feel like crap. Humans are alkaline animals so I try to consume a mostly alkaline diet. A healthy PH level will prevent most if not all diseases.
Do whats best for you but I would highly recommend at least experimenting with a high fruit diet, the results may surprise you.

unless you're diabetic lol in that case... eat some protein with your fruit!

Actually I heard protein was way more harsh on diabetics. Type 2 can be reversed for sure, easily on a raw vegan diet even with fruit. Type 1 is a bit more tricky but I've read about some actually reversing it, although like most diseases that modern medicine is clueless about get the label "autoimmune disease". When the pancreas stops producing insulin modern medicine thinks the best and only solution is to inject insulin which in turn makes the problem worse because now the body is fooled into thinking the pancreas is functioning properly. The human body is very intelligent and will fix most problems if given the proper fuel and/or circumstances. The worse the disease the longer it will take to heal but modern medicine wants to feed everybody poison/chemicals when nature has the real medicine.
I wouldn't stop taking my insulin but I'd definitely do research on healing the pancreas naturally, same with any disease. My dad for one was told he had prostate cancer and is pre diabetic. Thank god he listened to me and changed his diet because he was about to listen to the idiot doctors. A couple weeks ago he went back to the doctor and they said everything reversed. They asked what he did and he told them about his diet. They said keep it up and he shouldn't have those problems again. It's frustrating because they didn't push hard for diet change like they were for pills and surgery. Big Pharma wants that money.
i hope I didn't bore you to death, lol. This is just a field I'm very passionate about.
Not boring! I dislike big pharma as well. We could talk for days lol
But I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant. Wasn't too severe but I ate cottage cheese or sliced cheese with my fruit. It just helps breakdown the fruit better when taken together.
Diabetes runs in my family so I take it seriously and get checked often. Gestational diabetes goes away after you have your child but it puts you and your child at a higher risk of developing it later on down the road. Very interesting. I was on a strict diabetic diet and watched my intake.. Checked my sugar. Never needed insulin though! I only gained 15lbs and 7 of it was my child.

Calories are calories. At the end of the day, if you eat, say 1400 kcal and you burned 1800 kcal, you lost 400 calories. The fat in your food is not changing the stored fat on your waistline. There are reasons to be concerned about the source of your calories, per calorie fruits and veg obviously pack more nutrients than, say, a kitkat bar, but my biggest concern of junk would be eating habits. The only exception would be no carb diets, since they're trying to induce ketosis.
I'm confused what you mean by a "healthy pH", your blood pH isn't drastically changed by consuming different foods. You'd have some pretty nasty symptoms if that regulatory system ever allowed your blood to become more alkaline (muscle spasms, vomiting, etc). I would think most of the benefits of the alkaline foods you mention would come from eating fresh fruits and vegetables. But we all know vegetables are healthy!
You also have to have the mindset to make diet changes and do research..... Not everyone is willing to so that.
Diabetes is a weird thing though. It's not always fixed with diet but mostly yes.
My migraine issue I believe is a food allergy but again... I just don't have the mindset to change it bc I fucking love almonds.
Almonds are good. Do you soak your nuts? I soak my nuts, lol. Seriously, when you eat nuts they mess up your digestion tract. Raw almonds have tannic acid and an enzyme inhibitor. Just google benefits of sprouting nuts and seeds. They taste better too.
And don't blame big Pharma for everything. I beg people to make lifestyle changes rather than take a pill, that I am selling them no less. MOST will not do it. They would rather take the pills and bitch about how much they are costing them.

Yeah but one time... I went to the doctor bc my stomach hurt. HE TOLD ME IT WAS ANXIETY AND TRIED TO GIVE ME LEXAPRO and I was like... nope. I'll go to walmart and buy those 5htp pills or whatever they are. Turns out, it wasn't anxiety. I had a bad stomach virus that landed me in the ER a few days later and lasted for a month.
Moral of the story... when I left his office, in the waiting room I noticed the CLOCK ON THE WALL SAID LEXAPRO.
that's big pharma for you. hide ya kids, hide ya wives.. cause they paying errrbody out here!
EDIT: it should be noted i never went back to that doctor again.
Do you guys have any tips for eating more nutritiously? I've been slowly shifting away from the Taco Bell-laden diet that I've subsisted on for so long, and while my diet is at least mildly acceptable, it's still not exactly nutritious either. I'd probably be deficient in a few things if I didn't take my multivitamin.
I know HOW to eat nutritiously, but part of my problem is that I just don't like vegetables. I can choke them down, but...blegghhh. I like peppers, but that's about it. I'm proud to say that I've managed to make broccoli somewhat palatable with olive oil and garlic, and I can do spinach sometimes, but I don't like enough of a variety of veggies to make them a large part of my diet. It's not so bad if they're in a pasta or something, but veggies by themselves are tough for me. Maybe it's just one of those things where I have to force myself to do it, but having a significant part of my diet come from food that by and large tastes bland or unappealing to me is not something I really want to do. Any tips, other than smothering everything in butter or olive oil?

Try lemon juice on your broccoli; boil cauliflower and mix them in when you mash potatoes; roasting vegetables in the oven can change the flavor of some veggies dramatically; hummus makes all raw veggies better.
