What a long strange trip it's been Arguably one of the most famous lines in rock and roll, this snippet has served as title and subtitle to a large number of books and articles, invoking, as it does, the epoch from which it stems. It rates an entry of its own in Skeleton Key, which notes that the line's abbreviated form, "WALSTIB", is instantly recognizable to Deadheads.
Here's a list (not claiming exhaustiveness) of books and articles which have used the phrase in their titles:
* 20 Years of Rolling Stone: what a long, strange trip it's been (1987) * Some Lessons About Libel Law and Communication Science From the Long, Strange Trip of Jeffrey Masson and the Case of the Fabricated Quotations by Clay Calvert. DAYS FOR BIG NAMES FOR 4TH OF JULY FEST SET
Rothbury Music Festival announced today, the lineup schedule for Rothbury 2009 headliners - The String Cheese Incident (their only 2009 performance) will top the bill on Friday, July 3; The Dead (their only summer appearance) will headline on Saturday, July 4; and Bob Dylan and His Band and Willie Nelson & Family will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, July 5.
The festival also announced the "2-Day Sat & Sun Ticket," a reduced rate ticket that allows access to the show on Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5.
does this end any speculation of adding neil young or any other big headlining act? probably not but i'd say this points to it being less likely of a headliner-size addition

I think it does. The additional headliner speculation was completely based on a rumor started by some random guy who thinks he knows everything (clearly he doesn't). Plus, some folks at AEG have implied to Infobury mods that that wasn't the case.
About a week after I bought my Bonnaroo ticket last year, the Rothbury lineup came out and I was thinking, "aaah, I really wish I had seen this first". I considered it this year as well, but out of the top five bands on the bill, only Bob Dylan really appealed to me, and I've heard his live shows can often be mediocre.
Everything about Rothbury seems right up my alley though - not only the great music, but it has a forest and a lake, and it's over 4th of July weekend as well. Also, I love the fact that there are late night shows every night of the festival, including Sunday night. Very awesome. I'll get there one year though - who knows, maybe even next year.

well guys, now that i've attended both festivals, i've made my decision: rothbury kicks roo's butt
yes it was my first year, and first times are always nice. but i just can't think of many ways that roo is better. and i've spent a lot of time defending roo. the temps are cooler, the crowds are smaller, the setting is prettier. and sherwood, well, no one can explain it to you until you see it. it lived up to all the hype and then some.
one thing that really stuck out to me, though, was that i kept thinking how stale roo is compared to roth. i've been to three roo's now, and it just feels like nothing changes but the lineup. the bobbleheads are always the same, the fire art is always the same, the silent disco is always the same. there never seems to be anything really special or unique added or changed. there's no one thing that really sticks out as a "wow" factor for me. the forest on the other hand...it's full of wow's.
now, i still love roo, and i would never say i wouldn't go again. obviously if the lineup grabs me, i'll be there. but as of right now, i think roo will be on the back burner for a few years in lieu of fests like roth, allgood, and 10klf.

haha...i didn't think that needed to be addressed. it was the friggin' dead!! ;D
but, my favorite shows were SCI(their second set KILLED), chromeo, and the dead. mule was pretty awesome, too. they did a cover of sugaree which i was glad to hear since the dead hadn't played it the night before. oh, and mstrkrft was one of the sweetest dance parties ever.
the only show i was disappointed in was the crowes. and i hate saying that because they're my favorite band next to pink floyd, but their show just seemed a little dead and uninspired. it also didn't have the same sound it usually does. i don't know how to explain it. just wasn't the same chris IMO. maybe it was just an off day.

I figured the music was awesome. I'm just always interested in what shows people liked over others. I imagine the Dead was awesome... did you catch any of Dylan? Any collaboration between Dylan and the Dead? (I'm assuming not cause you probably would've mentioned it )
Glad you had an awesome time though! It's on my to-do list in the next few years, but we'll see.

i didn't catch dylan. i've already seen him, so i didn't have that whole "i have to go just to say i've seen him" attitude. we were going to catch the end of the set and then head to UM, but UM started early, so we just went straight to that.
the dead really know how to lead people on a long strange trip. at first it wasn't what my mind needed at the time, but just after i had that thought, i was into it. it was insane. warren fits so well with them IMO.
yeah i've pretty much decided that i am going to hang up the bonnaroo hat and do rothbury next year. don't get me wrong i fucking love bonnaroo, but after doing it four times and not having any other festivals under my belt except last year's trinumeral, i really feel i need to diversify. rothbury has a lot more of my personal tastes that bonnaroo only has scratched the surface of in the last two years. but after hearing my friends' stories of rothbury and reading posts like hippieNaustin's and watching youtube videos of the sherwood forest and SCI's 2nd set it just seems that's where i need to be. but hey after 2008 i told myself i wasn't going back to bonnaroo and then phish, mars volta, and moe. happened.

obviously my fest choices will ultimately come down to lineups. but i can't imagine with roth's track record so far that they would book a lineup so bad i wouldn't want to go.
man, its crazy how differently people can perceive music, I thought the dead lost all direction and flow during the 2nd set and to me it seemed like they hadnt practiced at all since the tour ended, I left during the 2nd set cause I couldnt take it anymore. Roth is def a fucking sweet ass festival though, the vibe, the aesthetic, all the art work and sherwood forrest were all amazing. But I do have to say I thought all the late nights on the tripolee stage were fairly bad and were way to short which def could of contributed to the lack luster performances. Cheese was def the highlight of the fest though, aside from a few flubs they put on an amazing performance and all the dancers, huge beach balls and crazy lights really made it something special, Dylan I thought was surprisingly not to bad, his band was pretty awesome and made up for his not being able to sing at all.

i can understand what you mean about the dead's second set. i think it was one of those things where you either were with them or you weren't. i know quite a few of my group felt the same way you did. i also agree about the sets at the dome. i didn't go to many of them, but they were definitely short. only an hour? really??
but, the shows i decided to go to blew me away for the most part. and to actually be REALLY COLD at night, and even throughout parts of the day is amazing. the lack of 30-40k extra people was also very nice.
i'm sure we'll all have fun at whatever fests we pick. everyone looks for different things in a fest, and for me, sherwood forest, the smaller amount of people, THE FRIGGIN' DEAD, and a 100x better vibe than bonnaroo will bring me to roth.quote]

well of course roo will seem stale compared to roth. you've been to roo 3 times and this was your first time at rothbury. it's like when i go to a brand new movie theater.....everything seems nicer cuz it's not the same old theater i've been to a few times where I know everything. if rothbury had been around for 4 years now and you've gone to it for 3 years....then went to roo for the first time......you'd probably feel that roo was fresh and roth was stale.
the other factors are understandable as to why you think roth wins.....cooler weather, smaller crowds.....but i felt this part of your reasoning was obviously going to happen.

hahah...thats funny. Very impartial pov.
not to start this debate again...the 'roo lineup put rothbury to shame. I don't care if they held Rothbury under the sea in a submarine.
but I'm glad people enjoyed themselves at rothbury.

i'm not comparing lineups here. i'm comparing atmosphere, size, surroundings, etc.
as for how many times i've been to roo. yeah, i have been 3 times. but even for the people who went to their second roth this year, there were still tons of NEW art. and NEW things to look at. roo just doesn't do that.
you can think whatever the hell you want to about whether you think my mind was made up. i was excited for roth, yes. most of my really close friends were going to be there, and since i bought a ticket and didn't get to go last year, i was itching to be there.
however, had it not measured up, i would have gladly conceded. as i've stated before(but what you will conveniently forget of course) is that i've spent numerous posts doing nothing but defending roo to the roth nazis over on infobury. but i'm sorry, this fest is just all around better IMO.
in the end, you can't say a fest is better in general terms because of a lineup. they will ALWAYS vary from year to year on whose is best based on PURE opinion. which again, is why my final commentary on the war between the two didn't include that.
but feel free to flame and bash before you've gone to both
p.s. i'd like to add that i had one of the best weekends of my entire life at rothbury, in spite of the fact that my wallet, including all forms of identification, all my cash for the weekend, and any access to my bank account, was stolen. do you have any idea how hard it is to get all this crap replace?! blah
Post by GratefulHippie on Jul 9, 2009 18:55:25 GMT -5
yeah. luckily i was flying out of flint, which is significantly smaller than the closer airports. i had my checkbook, and they found some receipts with my name on them, plus i'd flown the same airline before, so my baggage claim tickets had my name as well. i had to get this ion test done on my hands, but that was about it.
i did have to have a friend's mom come and pay to get my car out of the garage it was parked at back in dallas since they didn't accept checks. not that anyone accepts checks without an ID now anyway
The only reason I brought anything up is because a couple months ago you were on here saying that Rothbury was better than Bonnaroo and the "vibe" was 100x better, but you hadn't even been to Rothbury yet. That is very funny to me. You can see how that's funny, right?
Edit: I thought you were there in 08 til I read your post on the previous page.

i take my vibe from people. the roth people i know seem comparatively cooler and more laid back than most people here. that's my personal opinion, and i don't care or mind if you have a different one.
either way, why does it matter? the most recent post i made was after i'd been to both, and roth just sealed what i had already expected...that it's better than roo in almost every way IN MY OPINION. i enjoy smaller crowds. i enjoy cooler temperatures. i enjoy having more to look at than the same bobbleheads and silent disco every year.
roo will always be my first love, but these days roth just treats me better
Note the date of your post hippienaustin. You said the Rothbury vibe is better than Roo, yet you had never been to Rothbury. How could you say that Rothbury was better if you had never been?
Here's another example. You say that the sherwood forest must be seen in person, but you had never actually seen it in person. Did you see it on youtube or something?
^I guess I just don't feel amenities make a festival. If I want to go to a resort I will do so, if I want to listen to great tunes I will go wherever they are being played. Also I have been to where Waka has moved and it is a hella nice area up in the mountains.
i think it's easy to disregard sherwood if you've never seen it in person. but for me, that kind of thing one-ups open fields. and there are secret stages in the forest, so you've still got tunes to hear. not to mention the temperatures make is absolutely amazing. it's already gotten up to 95 here in texas this year, and bonnaroo is definitely no escape from the heat.
The only reason I'm calling you out is because you were on a Bonnaroo message board saying that Rothbury was better, yet you had never been to Rothbury. Can't you see how that's f'd up?
