The further I get away from the show, the more I realize what a gigantic d*ck Walt was.
Have you watched it more than once? The first time I watched it, I don't remember thinking of him as a bad guy at the beginning, but the second or third time, I noticed more stuff early on that kind of set him up as an a$$hole right from the start.

I have watched parts of the first three seasons twice before Abra stopped watching it. I also rewatched the first 8 episodes of season 5A whenever they did the marathon. I do know what you are talking about regarding that though. When I was rewatching with Abra, I kept thinking over and over again "Why do people hate Skyler again?". I was more specifically referring to the finale where basically everything he does is self-serving. It was harder to see this in the context of the emotion of the original viewing of it.
Skimming through this thread makes me really sad that the show ended. Although having the knowledge I have now, it is very interesting to see all the predictions and opinions on things. I still have the final episode of BB & Talking Bad on my DVR as "unwatched" because it pains me to see the "1 New" disappear. (I ended up taking the night off to watch it so I watched it live with the story sync and not DVR'd.)
It stands up well to multiple viewings. We are about to finish our second time through the whole thing, having watched earlier seasons even more, as we would usually rewatch in anticipation of a new season starting. I catch new things every time.

Started rewatching today. So glad to be reminded that I have a legitimate reason to hate Skylar.... "My name is Skylar White, yo"
She really is just such a bitch. There was never a tine in the whole entire series that I ever felt bad for her. She's just a horrible, selfish person. I guess those words could be used to describe Walt as the series goes on but no, Skyler is worse.

There were times that I felt bad for her and sympathized but then the show would have her do things that made me go right back into hate mode. Calling the cops on Walt, fucking Ted, being angry because her husband no longer does whatever she tells him to.....definitely turned me against her.
I do remember feeling terrible for her when she was crying in the streets thinking that Walt took her baby forever.

the craft of well written stories. pulling your emotions both ways for several of the characters in the show. I may have to go back and watch them all again now!

The worst thing the show did to make me hate Skylar was her singing "Happy Birthday Mr. President". Out of everything Breaking Bad has done that makes me the most uncomfortable. Decomposing bodies in a tub of acid? No biggie. Awkwardly singing that sexual-tension-filled song in front of the whole office while you're pregnant and putting on a sexy voice....nope. Can't stand it.
I can't pinpoint exactly what I mean by this, but I feel like we are being sexist by disliking Skylar so heavily. I mean, Walt was lying to her everyday all day for a year, and he made decisions that threatened her life and her family's life. She has every right to not be cool with how things go down. ESPECIALLY WHEN ALL WALT HAD TO DO FROM THE JUMP WAS ASK HIS OLD GREY MATTER BUDDIES FOR THE MONEY FOR CHEMO!

Walt is portrayed as the anti-hero so we're going to side with him more. I don't feel sexist for disliking Skylar. She had some great moments but when I re-watched the first season a little while ago (after having grown to really hate her) I started to feel like I really understood why. In the first few episodes it's not so much that he's lying to her....she doesn't even really know yet. But it's more about how before his diagnosis she was the person in charge. She wore the pants in the family. She forced Walt to eat veggie bacon on his birthday and would basically control most of their family life. It was after Walt stopped listening to her and started to rebel a bit that she really didn't like. I distinctly remember not liking her and the way she talked to Walt at the breakfast/dinner table. She seemed to emasculate him and was more annoyed that she couldn't control his life anymore. I especially felt that way when she was trying to force him to do chemo and set up the intervention about it when he just wanted to deal with it his own way. I get that she was doing it out of love but there was a connection to the way that she controlled most aspects of their lives before the show started.

Most people could relate to Walt on some level, we all want to go ape shiz at some point. What we don't want is to be a little nitch-nitch that constantly brings attention to herself.

They set Skylar up to be hated in the first episode with that handjob scene. I mean that's her idea of a "special evening" for his bday? A hj while she bids on eBay? Plus like itm said she always talks down to Walt and disapproves of everything he does with JR (even before the bad stuff like getting drunk and getting flashy cars).
Yes there are times when we should feel bad for her, but that still doesn't change the fact that she is indeed selfish. And no....that isn't sexist.

This. I hate that feeling when you feel so uncomfortable and embarrassed for someone that you begin to feel personally embarrassed. That is exactly how that scene made me feel and I couldn't shake it. But yeah, the handi-j and veggie bacon right from the beginning was pretty sad. Even worse is that she was bidding on things on ebay when they were supposed to be having financial issues.
Also, I'm a woman and I feel strongly that Skylar is a total b*tch. I'm not being sexist.

I think she was actually selling, rather than bidding. Doesn't change the inherent problem with her in that scene. And I totally agree about the Happy Birthday Mr. President scene. That is just impossible to watch without cringing.
Another reason to hate Skylar: she calls the intervention, tells everyone to say whatever is on their mind (with the talking pillow), and then flips outs when Marie (and then Hank) say Walt should be able to make his own choice.
