if you have the option, southwest is the way to go...no charge on two checked bags. when i went in 07, i took a backpacker's backpack (extremely huge), and a regular backpack. the backpacker's backpack was able to fit a tent, an air mattress, about five flasks, inflator for the air mattress, two pairs of shoes, and various other small items.
i just ok'ed the days off with work, so im good to go. still not concrete, but im seriously considering renting a car from LAX to the grounds.
I just bought my plane ticket along with another friend from DC today. We figure renting a car for around 100$ is the way to go as well. It will be a locker to store our stuff in. We can charge our phones at night. We can take trips to the store and not worry about carrying everything by hand. And who knows what the taxi from PS to Indio and back would cost.
Plane ticket was 324 roundtrip. Not too bad but I was hoping for under 300
i actually just put a reservation in for a car right now. $90 is chump change for peace of mind knowing i will be able to get to and from the fest. also, like orly says, a locker to keep valuables. i can get plane tix for like $220 roundtrip, but will wait until later to see if they go down.
I do it when I go to roo, you have to be really conscious of what you pack, but it's totally doable
i was wondering about this. how would you take a tent, air mattress, etc. on an airplane?
For roo I now only bring 1 checked bag. For everything. No air mattress of course, but I promise you I sleep well
In my duffel type suitcase I have a backpacking type tent, down sleeping bag, a tarp, rain boots, flashlight, small first aid kit, batteries, clothes, light snacks (granola bars usually), and toiletries. Compression sacks are a lifesaver, especially when it comes to bedding/sleeping bags and clothes. I also bring a small backpack (camelbak) with more valuable items as a carry on. You'd be surprised with how much you can leave behind and still be totally comfortable (even moreso, in my opinion!). The backpacking list is also a good resource to get ideas: bonnaroo.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=logistics&action=display&thread=3874
But if you shoot for two "bags" your second bag could be a cooler filled with an air mattress + other non food items Tara has done that before, it seemed to work out nicely! Not sure how she kept it shut though... Personally if I were to go with a second checked piece, I'd bring another duffle with a shade tent and a chair if I wasn't camping with a group who already had one.
AND I always make sure to fly southwest, so they don't charge me for my bag(s)!

Since it's apparently less grueling at Coachella...Does anyone who's been before think it'd be kosher for my friend to take her 2 year old? She loves music and LOVES gaba gaba... loves it insanely
I think it'd be a blast, personally...but I've never been. So I can't tell her with 100% certainty that it'd be ok.

That should be OK.Coach's a very family friendl environment. She should make sure to bring the ear muffs for the 2 year old. But,I'm sure she already knows that.
It will be more visually appealing for her with all the art. The grass will be nice for her too vs the dusty bonnaroo air. There are a lot of nice shady spots
Do they plan on camping? I know it can be pretty noisey there til around 4. I'm sure the kid would like the Gorillaz too
Try this visual tour of '09 out too. click on each picture and it does the full 360 degree spin of the camera in all directions to get an idea of the surroundings. Pretty awesome

Thanks for the kiddo help, guys
I really hope she does decide to come and bring her daughter, it would be sooooo fun. She's an amazing little being and I think she'd have more fun than anyone else there!
If not... I may be going "solo". Why are most of my friends such wimps?
That's a hell of a drive. I didn't want to miss much work so I took the flying route. I wish I could road trip it.
I think I am going to buy my ticket today, financial aide came in and I have paid off all my credit cards and personal loans and still have quite a bit of money to play around with after tossing some into savings. Kinda just want to get it out of the way now.
Also with the month of April some of us will get paid 3 times if you look at the month and how its laid out. Bonus cash for 'Chella
Just filed my taxes. Will be purchasing my ticket in about 2 weeks.
Heres my plan (opinions/recommendations welcome) Fly Pittsburgh to Phoenix. Ill be travelling with someone else so flying Southwest will give us 4 checked bags (tent, cooler, 2 suitcases) and some carry ons. I plan on paying the extra $50 to fly our canopy down. Renting a car in Phoenix and driving the 4 hours into Indio. This allows us to camp with the convenience of the car at the camp site. Planning on picking up chairs, beer, and whatever camping supplies I cant fit in the 2 suitcases and cooler. Any thoughts or does this look doable?
