Everyone has such amazing photos. I'm thinking I must have a really crappy camera. Granted it's just a simple basic point and shoot but after seeing all of these pics I'm thinking maybe I should upgrade to a nicer camera.
I'm impressed by the number of people who got video of the naked guy at the Phoenix show. I was too slow reaching for my camera. I was too stunned by what was going on. I couldn't even believe it at first..."Wait, is that guy...OMFG..he is..he's naked and flashing everyone." Crazy.
The crowd was good at keeping their bodies clean but sucked at keeping the festival grounds clean. There were empty bottles and garbage all over the ground. Sad.
looks like nodepression and i were both in the back at fever ray - what an astounding show. we were going to leave it early, but the draw was too strong, so we cut down the side and got a little closer. it was weird down there, too.
bonnaroo could learn a few things from coachella about the art and tents. roo needs a version of the Sahara tent!

They had a fire breathing dragon last year made out of metallic parts. The thing actually moved around and breathed fire out of it's mouth and nostrils. It was pretty amazing. GV really let everyone down with the art this year. Lots of complaining about that and rightfully so. I didn't go this year so I'm speaking on behalf of the coachella board. coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40832
After living in LA for a few years (having grown up in Cincinnati) I realized how much more popular electronic music is on the west coast. It was a shocking difference. They have HUGE raves ALL THE TIME. Like every quacking weekend there'd be a massive rave with thousands in attendance. I also realized how much less popular jambands are out there compared to the midwest/east. So it definitely makes sense what the two festivals offer accordingly.

i saw a pic of that dragon and it looked amazing. i was thinking lots of the art was sourced from the Burning Man people, so I expected a little better. The crane was cool though... there was also this organ thing that was kinda lame and a fire tube which was cool, but not that cool. And the LED box thingy - which was nothing during the day, but had crowds of people opening their third eye watching if after dark.
personally, I liked the idea of a dedicated dance music tent - its a good alternative when there is nothing you want to see on the main stages. in addition, it proximity to the food area made for good background music (i.e. you dont need to pay close attention to the lyrics and sound overlapping was no big deal)
plus it showed me that you can go all out on a temporary tent with lighting...
Coachella is definitely a festival I want to attend (along with Lollapalooza) in the future. So I ask you people, were the "logistical failures" that have made Coachella vets swear off the festival for good over exaggerated or legit problems for the festival? Because I really do want to experience the Big Three U.S festivals (Roo, Lolla, Coachella) in my lifetime.
Because even though Bonnaroo may not have the best line-up year in and year out, the experience itself makes all other festivals a distant second in my mind.
To me, these "failures" were overblown. However, as I mentioned before, I was staying at a hotel and took a shuttle to and from the fest each day that couldn't get much easier.
But, there were still some logistical things that I noticed (i.e. beergardens, general overcrowdedness (word?), etc.) but they were more just annoyances rather than things to keep you from going. I've been to Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lolla, and ACL and Lolla was my least favorite of the 4, so go to Coachella before Lolla for sure.
And yes, you're right, even though Coachella's lineup toppled the Roo lineup this year (IMO) Bonnaroo is still a better experience overall and I can't wait to be there in June!

^^^ what the phantom said.
although, really, the traffic situation did really bother me. they have been doing this festival at the same place for 10 years and they dont know how to get the people in and out quickly? there isnt a car search for day parking, so it's not that.
i understand that its a big festie and there are a lot of people driving in and out - but anything over an hour wait just shows a lack of planning, in my opinion.
i also dont understand the reason for beer gardens and the fenced in areas for food.
it is a beautiful venue once you are inside.
and everyone is smoking that bubonic chronic. but not sharing.

To me Coachella felt like a cake walk compared to Bonnaroo. which isn't to say Bonnaroo isn't run better (it is) but just cleaner and smaller. Other than the lines to get in, and the massive shower lines, which I'm pretty confident they'll fix after this year, I had no problems. I was able to get decent to great spots for every set I wanted to see but Gorillaz without pushing or shoving. I was able to see a bunch of great sets that would never play at Bonnaroo (but should) like Flying Lotus and The Specials.
damn noD we were right next to each other during the Avett Brothers. how was your time?
I had a great time, and it now that I'm recovering, and looking back at my photos I'm realizing how many great sets I saw. Hopefully next year I can get a crew together, because while it was still one of the best weekends of my life, it would have been nice to have people to share the stories with.

you never called
although even if you did, i bet we wouldnt have met up. i was txting schmee all weekend and we never managed to see each other.
Yeah, me and idio never made the connection. We probably saw a bunch of the same sets, but it's hard to meet up when you're in a new environment that's as chaotic as a festie. Not to mention with the shorter set times, there is a lot more bouncing around from stage to tent to stage, so I was hardly in the same place long enough to meet up.
Also, take note, there was some uber chron in the air the entire weekend, but I didn't find any friendly neighbors until right before Thom Yorke (thanks stranger) on the last day.
You may not be aware of this, but late-'80s Los Angeles Dodgers pitching legend Orel Hershiser has been missing for almost a week now. He was last heard from on Friday, April 17th, somewhere inside the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California.
Below is a timeline of what we know about his last public whereabouts, as constructed through his updates on Twitter, which are presented below in chronological order. If you have any information that would aid in his safe return, please contact the authorities or Tommy Lasorda.
The_REAL_Orel: Hey there Tweeters! I'm taking my daughter to Coaching Festival this weekend. Stay tuned for lots of Orel updates!
The_REAL_Orel: Sorry, kids. Not interested in your reefer. I say no to drugs, which you'd know if you read my memoir "Between the Lines".
The_REAL_Orel: Been waiting this porta-potty line behind a group of gay hippiesters in matching tank tops that say "Queens of Leon" for almost an hour.
The_REAL_Orel: Yep, daughter ditched me! Steve Sax used to pull the porta-potty trick everytime he wanted to hit a titty bar. How did I fall for it again?!
The_REAL_Orel: So hungry, but all I could find are seitan vegan-kabobs at this Meat Is Murder MorrissEats Food Truck. Could really go for a Dodger Dog.
The_REAL_Orel: Okay, I have been informed that the sno-cone I just ate was filled with Ecsta-PCP. Is there a doctor or trainer available!?!
The_REAL_Orel: I think I just saw Fernando Valenzuela, but he was naked, and his entire body was painted gold. Confusing, but he looked so beautiful!
The_REAL_Orel: DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN OR WHERE PINK FLOYD IS SUPPOSED TO START PLAYING!!?
The_REAL_Orel: WOOOOOO! I haven't felt this free since the wife and I had a sex threesome with my Cy Young Award back in that wanton winter of '88!
The_REAL_Orel: Hanging out at a secret party in the LCD Soundsystem trailer. Lindsay Lohan keeps begging me to finger her with my pitching arm.
The_REAL_Orel: Me & my new best friend DJ Steve Aoki constructed a giant Justin Bieber statue made of Sobe Urban Lifestyle Water bottles. Gonna burn it on Sunday!
The_REAL_Orel: The fat guy from the Gnarles Barkley band is giving free back massages in the Vicks Vapor Rub Chillout Tent! CRAZY indeed!
The_REAL_Orel: They won't let me into the VIP area for Jay-Z! I can't believe this! I AM OREL FUCKING HERSHISER! I can still throw a ball 87 goddamn miles an hour!
The_REAL_Orel: Remember when Kirk Gibson hit a game-winning homer and did that pump-fist thing!? I was fucking THERE! So let me in or I'll pump my fist into your FACE!
The_REAL_Orel:OK, smoked some hash out of a gas mask bong with Bruce Willis and a couple guys from the Animal Collection. They said it will mellow me out.
The_REAL_Orel: This Cobrasnake guy says he's a famous photographer and wants to take a picture of me with my junk tucked between my legs. Who's VIP now!?
The_REAL_Orel: Had to run and hide from security after choking Sly Stone because I accidentally thought he was Ricky Henderson.
The_REAL_Orel: Spent a few hours getting my shit together at the American Apparel Naughty Nurses Emergency Station. Could do another one of those sno-cones now.
The_REAL_Orel: WHERE ARE MY FLIP-FLOPS!?! I CAN'T FIND MY FUCKING FLIP-FLOPS!!!! I AM KING OF COACHELLA AND I DEMAND MY SANDALS BE RETURNED NOW!!!!!

Posted a couple of times b4 but coachella is Disneyland and the roo is the Bataan death march. The people on the left coast just are a bit whiny sometimes. The one thing they need to change is the way you get into the fest. I never had a problem getting to camping. At the roo it was 3 hours one time and 6 hours another time, which is bad also. They both have the same problem: They are in the middle of nowhere and there is only 1 or 2 roads in. Everyone should go to both of them because they are so different mostly in good ways. They should both spend about a zillion dollars and make a great road going just to the fest. At the roo that would be easy because it is just off I65 but Coachella is a bit different cr*****
My Coachella experience sounds a lot different than those complaining. I arrived around 3pm Thursday. I waited for about 2 hours (compared to the 4+ I waited at Roo seemed fine with me). During the wait I drank about 8 beers and shared some corn with a lot of cool people waiting in line. My rental car fell through so I hitch hiked to the Polo Fields and made it fine immediately. I ran into some Aussies who had an extra car they wanted in camping instead of parking so we rode with them into the fest and they left their car at our site. During our wait in line I seen a lot of people drinking bottles so our little group of people were offering them a buck a bottle or else they will just get taken away by security. It ended up being a fun wait and there were 2 security checking our 6 people and the process took about 10 minutes to check our bags and the car.
The shower fiasco could have been avoided. Wake up early people. I went there by 630 each morning and waited no longer than 10 minutes each of the 4 time I showered. When I went back up at 8 to get my daily breakfest burritos or hawaiin donuts or fruit from the market I seen the 2 hour lines you all are talking about.
Lines getting into the concert area weren't that bad by I entered by noon each of the 3 days anyways. I got in early cause our camping wasnt that exciting in the mornings besides watching people dance for hours on end to techno in the camping music tent (they brought their own radios). We thought why not go sit at the Do Lab and kill some time and stay cool in the shade/mist or just have fun and dance in the high noon sun while getting sprayed down.
The 75,000 people was a little buzz kill, not going to lie but it didnt hold me back from getting a good spot for anyone. I caught 70% partial sets all weekend since the tents were so close and a lot of the bands on the lineup i havent got a chance to see in the past. The sets were short but it kept my mind going all day by catching 12-15 acts daily.
The scenery kills Bonnaroo in every way possible, cant even explain how pretty it is there. The art was ok, not as good as the past but still better than Roo's. The Do Lab and Sahara tent are amazing when there is nothing you want to see early in the day.. wish Roo had one of these as well.
Roo kills Coachella as far as late night sets go, long sets, cheaper food/drinks/tickets/free camping and comedy. Roo's party supplies are just as good but easier to find so thats a huge plus. Roo is more organized as far as this year goes. I went to coachella in 07 and it was more organized by far. 75k is just too much unless they get another stage and open up more of the field.
I hope coachella takes notes of what went wrong this year and tries to fix it. I will be back.
F what their board says about the Gorillaz sucking, they're idiots to say they weren't anything short of amazing.

the craziest thing (so far) that was snagged was the 1080i video of FNM's performance. someone has it posted on dime - its over 15 gigs!!!
someone made a normal dvd of it, rar'ed it, and posted to sendspace - if anyone that doesnt read the coachella board and/or have access to dime wants it, ill post a link.

They expected a spectacle (which is a very reasonable expectation given both Coachella's history and the way Damon hyped it in interviews) and what they got was simply a band playing with some cheesy videos in the background. See Daft Punk and Roger Waters if you're wondering what I'm talking about.

They weren't really cheesy, the super hd screen was pretty cool as well. I didn't know what to expect, but I really enjoyed the show musically. There were also problems with the volcano, and from what I've read that grounded Shaun Ryder and Mos Def, but that could just be speculation.
