Looks completely doable. I am flying into Dallas/Ft Worth, me and my friend from DC ended up on the same flight from there to Palm Springs CA at 2pm on Thursday. We rented a car that we will pick up. We are going to give 2 random people at the airport a ride to Indio and we're driving down to Joshua Tree National Park to do a little walking around for an hour or 2.
We hope to make it back to Indio around 7pm and get our stuff set up. I paid 200 bucks for a camping package that includes renting a 7X7 tent, getting our 10X30 camping spot, 4 blankets, 2 pillows. Probably a dumb idea considering I could have bought that at a wal mart for the same price but I don't want to lug around all that extra stuff.
All we will need is 2 chairs and a cooler and our beer and snacks. Being it is April we both get 3 checks that month instead of 2 (paydays April 1, 15,29) so neither of us mind spurging extra on Coachella vending food and whatnot.

Looks like The Who almost played Coachella this year as well. I wonder if that will lead to a late add this year...
“We were going to play at Coachella, the New Orleans Jazz festival, we had all kinds of things planned, so I persuaded Roger [Daltrey] we should do the Super Bowl to kick those events off. And then decided that I couldn’t do that work later this year because I felt I had to continue to write.”
— The Who’s Pete Townshend explains (via Bllboard) why his band’s upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance went from being the kickoff to a massive global summer extravaganza to just a rather high-profile one-off. Well, there’s always next year.
Just filed my taxes. Will be purchasing my ticket in about 2 weeks.
Heres my plan (opinions/recommendations welcome) Fly Pittsburgh to Phoenix. Ill be travelling with someone else so flying Southwest will give us 4 checked bags (tent, cooler, 2 suitcases) and some carry ons. I plan on paying the extra $50 to fly our canopy down. Renting a car in Phoenix and driving the 4 hours into Indio. This allows us to camp with the convenience of the car at the camp site. Planning on picking up chairs, beer, and whatever camping supplies I cant fit in the 2 suitcases and cooler. Any thoughts or does this look doable?
Hmm... Do you have a friend in Phoenix? Otherwise, I would look to cut down on the length of drive by flying into an LA area airport. 2 hour drive vs a 4 hour drive.
Flying into Palm Springs was like 50 bucks cheaper than LA. Also it is half an hour away from Indio vs 2.5 hours from LA
look into it before buying your plane ticket
It was more expensive for me to fly into Palm Springs then LA and that was with Southwest. I need southwest because I want to not have to pay for all the extra baggage fees.

Here is my thoughts...Its an hour and half longer from Phoenix yes but its only one stretch of highway and about the same price to fly there then LA and with more managable times. Im willing to sacrifice that 1.5-2 hours to not have to sit in LA traffic and since we will have to buy alot of things when we land Im assuming (could be very wrong) that Phoenix will be alot cheaper then LA
No I havent bought my plane ticket yet. Probably by the 14th I will. Plane lands in Phoenix 11:10. Im giving my self an hour for baggage claim, getting car and stopping at a walmart or similar store. 4 hour drive plus an hour to eat should put us at Indio around 5

As someone who lives in LA and has family in Phoenix, I can give you the run down on the drive since I have made it about 15 times roundtrip.
It sounds like you will be arriving on Thursday. I have made the drive from LA to Coachella on the Friday morning of the festival for three years. When I left Santa Monica at around 10:00 AM, it took me 2 hours with no LA traffic (which means there are a lot of cars on the road but no stopping. You go the speed limit or higher the entire time). If you were to land at 11:00 AM and head straight to Indio, you will not have any problems at all with traffic. Traffic flows in the opposite direction out of town at that time, as people from San Bernadino and the desert head into LA to work, not vice versa. I would avoid the freeways from 7:00-9:30 AM and anytime after 2:30 PM or so. If you can hit the road from 9:30- 2:30 timeframe, you should be ok.
It really is worth it to cut the Phoenix to Indio drive out if possible. LA to Indio, it is pretty much all civilization, so you can stop when needed. That Phoenix to Indio drive, you can stop at pretty much 3 shit towns.
As for buying things, LA will probably be slightly more expensive that Phoenix. However, you could also buy your items outside of LA when you are driving down. Palm Springs or Palm Desert should have many of the stores you will shop at.

Much appreciated advice. Ill keep all this in mind when looking for tickets. It really all depends on times I can get to either place. And since this east coast girl has never been to neither LA nor Phoenix I may want to take an extra day to sight see before flying back.
Try to get your plane tickets booked within the next week and a half, because last year I waited until the end of February to book my ticket and it was a 100 dollars extra. Probably because it was within 2 months of the flight.
For those who have been, what's it like having a 12:00 bedtime? I can't imagine midnight being the cut-off point for music; that's usually when things start getting good on the Farm.
im going to sound like the biggest candy ass - but when i was at lolla - i was not at all bummed with the shows ending early.
i figure for coachella im going to be there pretty much when it opens until it closes. that's ALL day in the sun in the middle of the desert. plus 3 hour jetlag. so even midnight is going to feel like 3 am - probably more like 5 am.
with roo, i rarely crawl out of my campsite before 4 or 5 pm. there has to be some real magic (for example - Robert Randolph) going on to get me out in that afternoon sun because i know it will kill my latenight experience.
anyway, just my 0.02. from what ive seen, there is a late night dance tent set up for the campers...
Yeah, I guess I'm a camp rooster at 'Roo, though I like to embrace the lack of sleep. But, you're right, usually there's nothing I HAVE to see early. I still think ending at midnight at a camping festival is weird though. But, to each his/her own...

The music never cuts off at midnight. Prince for instance went til 1:15-1:30 AM. Usually, music will last til 12:30. Also, last year they added a dubstep dome that played for hours after midnight. It has not been announced but supposedly it will be back again this year.

Check. I just noted on the official site where it says that concerts end at midnight. I suppose it's not a hard and fast rule.
I know the lineup isn't complete for the Roo yet, but the announced lineup thus far has me so happy about Coachella. I don't think it can be topped this year.
There are even rumors Massive Attack will be aboard soon, as well!
^^^i completely agree. outside of led zep or pink floyd (waters and gilmour) reunions, i dont think i will regret my choice.
however, only time will tell if anything stunning is added.
only reason on these two bands is that i dont see them touring, so they would be one-off shows. most other bands will tour and i can see them closer to me.
I have a feeling you don't need to worry about missing Zep or Floyd. If either of those groups were to reunite, they would make a ton more money on their own than they could at a festival.

Having living in Phoenix, I can say the airport is a breeze getting in and out of. Its right off the expressway that leads to the 10 interstate that takes u all the way to Indio. If u've never driven in the desert, you might not be as bored as someone who does it all the time. If u can rent a car/suv with a luggage rack, id bunjee a lot of your gear to the roof. It will give you so much more space in the vehicle which is nice. Ok, that's my 2 cents. No matter which way you decide to go, just get there and have the time of your life. Cheers!
