Depeche Mode headlined that night. Kings of Leon closed out the Lolla equivalent of the Which Stage.
WOW. ok. they co-headlined with depeche mode. there were 2 stages (exactly the same size, on oppositte sides of grant park) and i must say there was a good amount of people there to see Kings. but honestly, who would go see depeche mode? certainly not I. Kings and the Killers were the reason I went to Lolla instead of that embrassment of a lineup last year... I understand some people are into the whole 20 minute songs and "The BOSS" I can respect that, but just not for me.
side note - Lollapalooza was good, but not nearly as crazy as 'roo. Live and Learn

I'm dying for the lineup to drop, I truly hope they're on the farm in some spot and yes -- I can't see them being too low.
I saw them in Nash and they still played a decent amount of old stuff. I can see how they might be an aquired taste, but nobody does the same kind of sort of...dirty...rock now.
They didn't headline Lollapalooza, and they probably wouldn't have headlined ACL had the Beastie Boys not dropped out.
They did headline Lolla and the ACL schedule was already out before the Beastie Boys dropped out. I know because I went.
Again...they played the secondary stage at Lolla (Depeche Mode played the main stage), but you are right about ACL. BB were billed higher but KoL were tabbed to play the main stage.

My thought on KoL... I can't stand them. I didn't like them when they came out and don't like them now. This band rings completely hollow to me. Thanks for asking.
If they played every song as well as they play Trani live, I would have no problem with them really.
I'm with you 100%. They played Trani when I saw them in a small club, Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, in 2005 and it was excellent. Of course they didn't play it in Charlotte in 2009...
the head line says: # Depeche Mode # Tool # The Killers
Those were lolla's headliners in 2009
Actually, Lollapalooza has 5-6 "headliners" each year. Jane's Addiction, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and KOL also headlined. In fact, after DM, KOL had the longest set time of the fest (105 minutes). The stage/field that Tool, Depeche Mode, and Killers played is slightly bigger, but the difference is no where near as huge as that between What and Which. I only saw Depeche, but every review I read said that KOL drew a much bigger crowd than DM.
they headlined every other festival they have played at in the last year, so why not bonnaroo?
worst logic ever?
why do i come to this thread
How about this.. at Lolla 2007, they played at 4:30 before MMJ and Pearl Jam, and at Lolla 2009, they headlined the North main stage. That would be comparable to playing at 3:45 before the Roots and Tool on the Roo mainstage in 2007 and coming back in 2010 to headline the mainstage. In fact, that allows an extra year of growth.
Did I mention they're the biggest rock band to ever come out of TN?

"Headlining" the north stage at Lolla like headlining the Which Stage at Roo in terms of crowd capacity.
And just because Elvis Presley was what the band called themselves doesn't mean his band wasn't the biggest band to ever come out of Tennessee.
come on. you know for a fact that not every artist inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame would be considered in the "rock music" genre. so bonnie raitt and simon and garfunkel are considered rock bands as well?

I'm starting to understand. You've been owned numerous times on this thread, and now, you want to patronize. And yes, Bonnie Raitt genuinely rocks harder.

S&G is folk/folk rock Cash is kind of rockabilly/country so they both have some roots in rock. but your right, grandmaster flash and the furious 5 were inducted and they are a rap group.

You must have been trained by monkeys.
nah....just having a debate with people i enjoy discussing music with. you're the only one who keeps turning it into some kind of superiority thing.
and i was "owned" in this thread? funny.....cuz I never felt that way. I'm glad you can feel better about yourself by talking shit about kings of leon and people who like them though.

Western rock, and folk rock respectively, an no I do not think I Am owning you just arguing.
Either way, the debate about Johnny Cash is moot. Elvis' band was filled mostly with Tennessee musicians and was the biggest rock band to come out of Tennessee by far.
But for the record, Johnny Cash played with the Tennessee Three. They were a band and they rocked. I would consider them a bigger deal than KoL on multiple levels.

I'm a long time lurker as you all can see by my lack of posts, but this will be my 3rd roo and I'm kinda baffled by some of the banter on here. I'm a KoL fan, and I'm not here to argue anything about that or any other band. All I really want to stop in and say, is that some of the bands at bonnaroo I won't give a chance and I typically don't have a legitimate reason. But I'll be damned if I'm going hate on a band or artist (except Kanye) because I don't particularly want them there. I'm fortunate enough to be able to meet a few close friends and enjoy a weekend of good music/times/new and old friends. Tuesday cannot come soon enough and the second weekend in June can't come sooner.
