I get where the "why can't we all get along with each other's musical tastes" impulse comes from. At the same time, I feel like often the people who whine about these kinds of threads are people without strong opinions or who don't like to argue the strong opinions they have. But the thing is, there are those of us who like to express our own musical taste in a passionate, often aggressive manner. This doesn't mean we aren't going to enjoy some music we like with friends and fellow music fans, just as it doesn't mean we're going to go throw molotov cocktails into the crowds at sets of bands we don't like. It just means we like to process that experience in a more opinionated and analytical manner than you might.

I really was going to do the B- balloon for Kanye in 08, before I realized I was gonna be at Chali2na Galactic. I do agree with you though, I mean this board is for discussing music. I always try to be respectful to people, but at the same time I have a opinion, and I am not particularly shy about it.

ehh, okay. I guess you're right in a sense -- my strong opinions are limited to areas that I deem have some grand degree of importance (when I think about it, I wanted to say 'politics' but it just boils down to situations regarding basic human rights because even the rest of basic political views are so subjective). Areas like music, literature, cinema...etc...are breezy compared to that. So I'll accept your point but discredit the premise -- my strong opinions don't apply to relatively harmless topics. Enjoy your music, but recognize your passionate and aggressive reviews may be the verbal equivalent of throwing a molotov cocktail. You'll still do it, I'm sure...but my "everyone get along" self will tell you to acknowledge the consequence. And chill out

The consequence, of what verbal sparring over the quality of a band that may well be an unopposed headliner this year? Get over it dude I am sure you dislike a band I like.

So you only argue about things that people will kill each other over? Good to know. I'll stick to arguing about the stuff that ends with me buying the other guy a beer.
Douche: "Hey man, you goin to Roo this year." Me: "No." Douche: "Why not?" Me: "Because I'm not an idiot."
This is an excerpt from an actual conversation.
Thanks a lot KOL, you've singlehandedly turned Roo 2010 into a friggin joke.
"Yooooooooooou, yo sex is on fiyaaaaaah! Blaaaaaah, my ass is on fiyaaaaaah."
Listening to that on the mainstage would probably cause a lot of loyal Rooers (like myself) to either crack up with laughter, or start weeping. This band belongs in an afternoon tent, not on the same stage where the Boss and Phish just played a year ago. It's a disgrace and it's embarrassing.

^I agree with you on two levels. First, your conversation partner is a douche. Second, I don't think they should headline. However, the whole "they're gonna kill Roo" argument is an old one that is repeated year after year. I'm going with some friends who think KoL is great. I've already told them I will check out the show with them. My theory is that I'll need a beer about 45 min. or so into the set. If it's good and I want to stay, I'll buy one. If it sucks or I'm not into it, I'll save my $6 and drink at the campsite.
I know we've had our fun (and will continue to do so) poking fun at KoL. However, for those of us going, we need to get over the fact that they're probably headlining. If you don't want to see take the opportunity to do something else. Go to the Cinema Tent, Silent Disco, DJ School, ferris wheel, drink\toke at your camp,WTF-ever...

I hear ya, but I don't think KoL will destroy Roo, they've just turned this year into a joke. I say this because as I was reading the lineup to some friends over the phone, most of them said, "Is this a &@$*+^% JOKE?!"

You can dislike/hate them all you want. No big deal. But I still don't seem to understand how one band can affect an entire lineup.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

One act doesn't ruin Roo or make it a joke. Try to remember, musical taste is subjective. KoL isn't my first choice by any means. I find their latest album over-produced and too poppy. But that's just me. Lots of people are buying their music and they're winning all kinds of awards. Now I'm not saying that Grammy or Popular = Good. I'm just saying that there are lots of people who like this band. So their inclusion near the top of the list (we'll see if they'll headline once all the acts are announced) shouldn't be a huge shock.

When they're the second band on this list they can. It's like a supermodel with a big wart right on the tip of her nose.

Yea I guess. I guess I just view the headliners differently. In 2005 I didn't see one headliner, 2006 I watched radiohead for 30 minutes and caught Phil and Friends. 2007 I only caught Tool. 2008 I saw them all but that I only stayed at Metallica for like an hour.
I had never heard of Widespread Panic when I first went to Roo. I was ignorant. But did I question their headliner status? Nah. I just went with the flow and enjoyed the festival as a whole. The headliner wasn't somebody I cared to see and so It didn't matter to me what order the bands were on the lineup. What mattered to me was all the bands on the lineup that I wanted to see.
I stopped reading after "I watched Radiohead for 30 minutes."
Completely fine. I am not a fan. I didn't know ANY of their music besides like two songs before Bonnaroo. They are really talented and I know they put on a good show.....but I was more excited about waiting for the Superjam and getting a front row for Trey, Mike, Benevento, Russo, and Phil Lesh.
Haha it's ok, I just don't read those words that often.
Question, if you were going this year would you be as excited as you were going in previous years. Strictly in terms of bands you wanted to see.
Here's how I look at it. Every year there are
a.) bands that I love and will most definitely watch the whole show (unless they conflict with another band I love, for example: Claypool and Raconteurs in 2008)
b.) bands/legends that I like but normally wouldn't pay a high price ticket to see in a concert setting. but i am excited at the chance to catch them on the farm (Al Green, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson)
c.) bands that I get into specifically because they are playing at Roo and I've heard/read a lot of good things about them. This for me is usually the thursday bands/lower tier that I spend time getting to know
This year the bands I love that I'd be extremely happy to see on the farm are:
Jay-Z The Flaming Lips The Dead Weather Michael Franti and Spearhead John Fogerty Les Claypool The Black Keys MMW Dr. Dog Dave Rawlings Machine
And the bands that I normally wouldn't go see but would want to try and catch at Bonnaroo are:
Tenacious D Damian Marley and Nas Steve Martin and Steep Canyon Rangers Jimmy Cliff Jeff Beck Kris Kristofferson Stevie Wonder
Then there are tons of bands that I've recently got into (The Avett Brothers, She & Him, Phoenix) and all the bands who I would invest time and listening to. Bands that i've heard put on good shows or read good reviews about.
To be honest, DMB and KOL I could take or leave. I definitely agree with the general feeling that KOL shouldn't be given an unopposed headliner slot. I defend KOL because I do like them and just try to combat all the negativity towards them (even if I can understand it sometimes. they say douchey things and the fashion line with expensive sh*t is retarded). I would probably watch both of these shows (if they were unopposed) sitting way back in the field of What stage and relaxing. Probably leave them early too depending on the late night situation.
Soooooo to answer your question: If I was going this year, yes I would be as excited. I haven't even begun to research/listen to the bottom few lines of the lineup so in 2 months time I probably would be even more excited to go. But my excitement would be a reflection of my personal taste and the fact that I like a lot of these bands.
BUT
on the flip side - based on JUST this initial lineup - I feel like if there was a year to skip it, this year is the one. My biggest draws last year was 2 sets of Phish and 2008 was My Morning Jacket/Phil & Friends late night. This year my biggest draw is Jay-Z.....but I'm just not as upset at missing him then I would be fore missing Phish or MMJ. This lineup (as it is) makes it easier for me to accept skipping this year. If Neil or Roger Waters or MMJ were on the lineup then I'd probably be devastated for missing the show.

I have actually seen Kings of Leon 3 times here in Atlanta and I was very impressed everytime. They put on an entertaining show. I guess it was mostly becuase they played most of their old stuff. New album is not so hot.
HAHA on radiohead..... I like to understand atleast what language the singer is using....Tom Yorke.....wow. lol. they are really spacey tho, so i guess thats cool.
Itrainmonkeys-- I'm almost excited that you are underexposed to the almighty joke of WSP. If I want to hear the allman brothers, I'll see the Allmans. WSP is all the songs the Allmans would never play. Its amazing how ears all look the same, but perceive so differently. I'd call it a blessing if I were more doctrinally religious.

BONNAROO!!!!!
You are thinking of Govt Mule, dude. Also I would much rather 2 nights of Panic over KOL any day of the week.

I don't like Radiohead. I don't really listen to them but I also recognize their talent. Obviously they built up a reputation for their consistently great live shows and solid albums to back them up. How else can you explain the success they have had?
Same thing goes for WSP. I don't know them. To be honest, I'd probably like them if I spent the time listening to all their albums and live shows and stuff. But I haven't given them a shot. in 2008 they had a solid closing set and I saw them play before Allman's last summer. The dudes can rock out and play music. Just because I don't love them doesn't mean they are a joke. It means that I don't listen to them or they aren't really for me.
This is how you plan to combat the KOL hate? By insulting other bands?

Nope. That's just wrong, no matter how you slice it.
6/18: Phish in Hartford 6/25: Phish in Camden 7/2-7/4: Nateva 7/17: God Street Wine at Irving Plaza 7/23-7/25: String Cheese at Red Rocks!! 8/17-8/18: Phish at Jones Beach 9/3: Rush at PNC
This Bonnaroo lineup is in dire need of some Rush.

honestly...you come to the defense of KOL by bashing radiohead? that only makes you look foolish, and makes KOL look worse by association
