I still really like KOL. Their new album was their least-good effort, but I thought it was still pretty good. Because of the Times is my favorite Kings record. I'm hoping (and believe) they'll be there. My guess would be David Byrne slot or Which Stage late night. They're definitely not big enough to headline What. They said in December they were taking a six month hiatus. Bonnaroo is six months from December + they haven't been on the farm in three years + they love Bonnaroo + they've gotten a lot bigger. I'd say count on it
I live in Georgia. A fairly populated, conservative, southern suburb of Atlanta. Here, the good-ol-boy, redneck image is one that everyone aspires to. The bigger your truck, the more camouflage your baseball cap, and the more Bud Lite you can consume, the better. To put it mildly, culture comes HERE to commit suicide.
A friend and I recently went to the local pool hall to play a game or two. Little did we know that it was Karaoke night, and that the freaks would be out in full force. As soon as we walked through the door, we were greeted by this 250 lb guy with cutoff sleeves (yes, in the winter) and a mullet, singing ( < a relative term) KoL's "Use Somebody," on the verge of tears.
We couldn't hold back the laughter. Faces reddened, tears streaming down our cheeks, we immediately found a dark corner so he couldn't see our critical amusement.
The point of my story is, well, KoL is verging on what I like to call "butt-rock." And they're fans don't charm my socks off either.
I don't care that they are popular. I don't really care if they try to sell $100 scarfs. I DO care that I have to hear their new cheesy, melodramatic music everywhere I go. I DO care "Use Somebody" may also invade my Bonnaroo memories as well.
I can think of a lot of worse bands off the top of my head, but I hope they stay away from Roo.

I think the REAL 'Roo discussion over KOL is not whether or not they are wanted on the farm it is where do WE('Roo farm goers) set the bar for their billing... is it 4th or is it 14th? I have no problem with KOL being somewhere between 10th-20th on the line-up... if they are 4th on the line-up 'Roo is setting the bar too low for me to consider 'Roo one of the best line-ups! and here is my argument why... in '07 they opened What Stage... in 3 years no band should deem the jump to top 10 on the 'Roo line-up. And 2009 was the first time they where selling tickets to their own shows for over $50 a ticket... one year alone does not deserve top billing! So, as I wouldn't mind them being on a good big stage like they deserve, it seems more appropriate that they take the Which Stage in no headliner form.

I still don't like them.... They will not be on my list of bands to watch if they play this year. Unless there is absolutely nothing else to see at that time.......
Here's a simple question: How low can you bill an act that headlined the Sommet center in 2009? I don't see them anywhere below 5th billing.
Got to agree with you here. 10th-20th on the lineup is NOT going to happen. I think the main discussion here is whether or not KoL will HEADLINE. If they do not, I fully expect them to be pre-headliners or Which Stage closers (the latter is where I feel they belong, ala White Stripes). Bring 'em to the Farm, just don't let them headline...
My money is on them getting the Friday headlining slot that Beasties got with something like Pixies, Arcade Fire or Pavement opposing them in the same slot David Byrne got. If they can put a popular act on the main stage after them for a late night set (Furthur, Flaming Lips, MMJ, etc), then most folks should be happy.

Good news for us haters, no way they will be an unopposed headliner. Bonnaroo doesn't do that anymore. lol. Something great will be goin on. Man I hope they get billed!
I grew up worshipping Rock and Roll like a religion. I know its shortcomings and strengths but have loved it unconditionally all the same since I was eight-years old. I ran away and joined the circus and honestly, I'm still as obsessed as I was as a boy. I'm not a kid anymore but I still remember how it felt and it doesn't really feel all that different to me now.
Kings of Leon are gaining steam in America, but are still nowhere near as big as Tom Petty, Metallica, and Beastie Boys (all previous Friday What stage headliners). Love them, but they'd be pre-headliner, Byrne slot, or Which late night
Even if the rumors are false, you'll still be seeing the best band in the state.
Ok carligula, I am putting my money where my mouth is. I just bought tickets to this. I love The Features and want to support them. If KOL does show up, I will judge for myself whether they are worthy of the headliner spot they have been given this year.

the first time i saw kol was at bonnaroo 05 on the which stage. sound has changed a lot but i think their sound is better with the last 2 albums. i hate the fact that they've gone mainstream, appear to be this mtv type of band and all these teenage girls are into them. stupid reason to not like them? you may say yes, i say no. still though, what it comes down to for me is how well a band performs, and they're pretty boring in concert. with that, i'd be disappointed if they were a headliner. i'm not sold on them being a headliner. ever. good thing my favorite part of roo is not the headliners.

IMO they sold out plain and simple.... My gf(very mainstream tastes) wants to see them I asked her if she would waste her time to see them and she said she would so its only time for me to do my own thing so bring them on and put 311 on at the same time it would be so great for us GRASSROOTS music lovers

311 and Kings of Leon playing at the same time? Talk about a mainstream clusterf*ck filled with underage drunk half naked girls and frat boys in their wifebeaters. I'll pass on both bands.

You cannot sell out when you start out pretending to be something you aren't. KoL just traded one false mantle for another. No big deal. Plenty of bands have done this.
Kings of Leon didn't sell out. They wanted to get big from the beginning. They've been "mainstream" in Europe for a good while now. And who cares how mainstream they are? Just because a lot of people know about it doesn't mean it's bad (Beastie Boys, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix). While I wouldn't pick them as a headliner, if they do wind up headlining, you can bet I'll be in the pit singing along

I think people are referring more to the drastic change in production style and look for the band than they are the popularity. I think this overlooks the fact that the band had always been the product of a major label, and that their image and sound has always been molded by what company reps felt would sell the band best to as large a public as possible.
This is a band where half the people didn't know how to play instruments very well when they first went on tour. There shouldn't really be any illusion of them keeping it real.

I cant really see them being in the top three headliners anyways......a number 4 spot yes and if that's the case whatever, but if they are a top three act the other two better be spectacular.
Their show at Sasquatch last year was ok. I really got pissed at them for not allowing the VIP ticket holder to use the main stage viewing area. They were the only headliner that did that. They wanted it for their friends. I paid for that viewing area, their freeloading friends sure as hell didn't. They need a serious attitude adjustment.
