I think people are referring more to the drastic change in production style and look for the band than they are the popularity. I think this overlooks the fact that the band had always been the product of a major label, and that their image and sound has always been molded by what company reps felt would sell the band best to as large a public as possible.
This is a band where half the people didn't know how to play instruments very well when they first went on tour. There shouldn't really be any illusion of them keeping it real.
I don't think cutting their hair and shaving their beards is a drastic change. And I may be one of the few people who thinks their musical style hasn't changed that much. I'm one of the few KOL fans I know who actually likes the new record and can't see what everyone hates about it. Not their best, but not horrible. Last time I checked, Evil Urges didn't sound like At Dawn (both great records, btw). The problem is people wanted them to keep making Aha Shake Heartbreak, which they didn't do. Instead, they went with the widescreen sound of Because of the Times, which is their best, most cohesive record, imo. Then they wrote some ballads, likely due to the fact that several of them were getting married, and everyone flipped a nuts. I just don't get it. And people prefer Lady Gaga play? (someone who has a couple good pop singles and a bunch of filler)
I also don't get the whole "they just stand there" thing. Sure, they're no My Morning Jacket as far as stage presence goes, but plenty of bands "just stand there" and play their songs and put on good performances (Animal Collective anyone? Bon Iver?)

Man, I really don't know any of their stuff except the one song on the 2004 Roo DVD and it was ok. I don't listen to the radio, so I have no idea what their new stuff sounds like. I've read many articles about how popular they've gotten and how they all REALLY like to drink. Other than that I have no opinion except that I hope they don't headline.
A Thieve's Parade 2/24 Conspirator 2/26 Kevin Smith 3/11 Keller 3/17 Papadosio 3/18 JJ Grey 3/25 Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer 3/26 Toubab Krewe 3/27 O'Death 4/11 Budos Band 4/22 EOTO 4/28 Summer Camp 5/6-29 All Good
I'm a fan, and would love to see them headline. The only reason I wouldn't want them to headline, is so they won't play unopposed, because this board would turn into a huge whine-fest of negativity.
Even if the rumors are false, you'll still be seeing the best band in the state.
Ok carligula, I am putting my money where my mouth is. I just bought tickets to this. I love The Features and want to support them. If KOL does show up, I will judge for myself whether they are worthy of the headliner spot they have been given this year.
Join me Nashvillians
After doing a little asking around, this is looking like a false rumor. Specifically, Rollum (the drummer) denies that KOL will be there. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up, but like I said, anyone that goes to this show will witness the best that TN has to offer.
I'm hoping the Features will be invited to play a proper set at Roo this year rather than having to rely on winning a battle of the bands for a crappy cafe stage slot.

Rumor or not I will be there to see The Features. I'm so glad they are getting another shot at being signed. It'll be better for them this time... I just know it! Oh, and I 2nd them getting to properly play roo this year. They deserve it!

I think the problem with KOL is this...They are a good band, but really, are the headliner material? Could you see someone coming to Bonnaroo just to see these guys? In years past, Huge names (Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Tool, Tom Petty, etc. etc.) have been a headliner along with bands with such a huge following (The Dead, RadioHead, Phish). In all of these cases listed, KOL is a distant second in terms of popularity and appeal.

I've always thought they use mainstreamers (Metallica, Pearl Jam, Springsteen, Jack Johnson, DMB, Police) as headliners as a way to bring in the general audience, whereas the supporting bands are for the festival regulars.

I agree. I wouldn't put them as headliners, but I would put them in the top 10-15 on the lineup this year. They are Roo veterans and gained a lot of fans and exposure recently. I do agree that they don't have the following of some other headliners and also aren't as big as some of the names like Springsteen and Pearl Jam.
I really like KOL as a band but if they were one of the 3 headliners.......I'd think that's a mistake.
I'm going to try to get out to the Roo for the first time this year, but if KOL is a headliner its not looking good. I thought about going last year but ultimately decided that I didn't want to attend Phish Fest.
In that interview with Ashley Capps on Consequence of Sound, he said one of the headliners this year didn't exist 10 years ago. King of Leon are the only group I can think of who fit that description and are big enough to headline. My bet is if it is KOL, they'll have a second headliner on Which.

I agree, I bet it is KOL vs MMJ, or maybe Stevie or Dylan.
Actually I did mean playing at the same time however I would think in retrospect Furthur would be the best matchup for co headliners. MMJ at the same time probably would not fly.

my bad. I thought you were saying one of them would be the younger headliner thing. i'm dumb
i just finished reading the cover article on KoL in spin (thank you bonnaroo? can't decide if i actually like the mag or not).
on the one hand, some of the stuff they say (esp. how 70% of the article seems to be caleb talking about how drunk he is all the time) makes them seem like pricks.
on the other hand, they appear to fully admit that they know people like us are out here hating on them and they don't blame us. he actually says that he knows the soccer moms liking them aren't cool.
i do like their early stuff. i did like this newer album when it came out and i got to see them on the first leg tour after it was dropped in nov 08, they weren't bad at all.
i guess in the end, i wouldn't mind if they were there but i reallllllly don't want them to take a headlining spot.

I've posted enough about not liking this band... pretty much, my sentiments have been echoed my allot of you, so I digress.
But, I was in Bowling Green, KY over Christmas with some friends. We were at this redneck dive called Betty's, and they had some awful karaoke (I did Aerosmith's take on "Train Kept A Rollin"). I swear to you, not one, not two, but THREE (3, III, tres, trois) people did "Use Somebody". The guy in charge of the karaoke obviously didn't care, nor did those guys either.

I quite enjoyed some of the old stuff. I was disappointed when this new stuff happened, and yeah.....KOL = PRIME nap time for me, unless they have someone else going on at the same time. I'd rather see anyone else...or nap to anyone else for that matter. The rumor of them headlining Friday kills me, but hey not a huge deal ~ I go for the undercards anyway.
I'd rather have someone else, but so much else will be going on that it wont matter. Kol never really grabbed my attention, so more time to rest up for the latenite.
