I think Jess may be on to something with this whole KOL playing the same time as another act. It kinda makes sense to me if KOL is a headliner...but how would you feel if you were a Bonnaroo headliner and for the first time, they played someone opposite of you?

It kills me, because Kings of Leon were one of my favorite bands for a long time - they were a huge draw for me both at Bonnaroo 2004 and 2005 (their best show I've ever seen, by the way). I even liked "Because Of The Times," and their corresponding set at Bonnaroo 200 - I think "Fans" might be the best all-around song they have.
That said, their new stuff is garbage. It's overpolished, overproduced, and deliberately designed to attract a mass audience. It is the very definition of selling out - a band that changed their sound over time to be more commercially appealing. Having them as a Bonnaroo headliner won't keep me away (anyone who decides to go to a festival like this on the basis of one artists' attendance or absence is an idiot, IMO), but I won't be enjoying them, unless they eschew garbage like "Use Somebody" and "Sex On Fire" for songs like "Wasted Time" and "Joe's Head."
My feelings exactly. I'm amazed at how quickly I switched from unconditional love to sheer hatred...but I did.

That really bothers me when people starting hating bands after they experience success. It shows you why those people liked the band in the first place--not for the music but for whatever sense of superiority they feel when they know about something that no one else knows about. And hopefully they're not confusing the evolution of KOL's music with the band "selling out" because that's horse shit as well.
These guys did it the right way, they toured their balls off and wrote amazing songs and put on great performances. Its not like they sucked Clive Davis' dong or their dad is Billy Ray Cyrus.

People aren't upset they got popular, they're upset at the change of sound necessary for them to get so huge. I don't how many times and in how many ways people need to spell that out.

It's true that a lot of people dislike them for their "sound change" but a lot of people also dislike them because of the fans, the singles they hear on the radio, or the way they look as well. You can't just assume that everyone that hates them used to be a fan of the band.

i don't hate them because they got popular, in fact i'm happy and proud of their success! i don't hate them one bit.
i hate that there is no more raw raunchiness in their sound. i like the skanky dirtiness of their earlier albums and caleb's nearly inaudible lyrics. what can i say? i'm a sucker for skanky, dirty music.

From Relix Magazine:
DVD Review of Kings of Leon : Live at the O2 in London, England
If you look at the music charts or listen to the radio, it's clear that Kings of Leon, the little Nashville family foursome that could, are now a pop band, especially after the release of last year's Only By the Night. But on the band's debut live DVD, filmed on June 30, 2009 in London, KOL is presented as the gritty southern rockers who made Youth and Young Manhood in 2003. Frontman Caleb Followill is back in a beard and the 22-song set list is at least 50 percent songs written before 2005. The filming itself is stylized and grainy, presumable meant to reflect the rawness of the band's songs. Of course, it's hard to forget just how much this group's popularity has grown when they roll through "Sex on Fire" adn the wildly jumping crowd sings louder than Followill.[/i]

On topic...I'm kinda torn on KOL. Well not really but torn between views expressed here.
I am a big fan of all preceding this album, tho' you can sort've see the progression. I miss the 'raw' sound...its what I liked about em.
But I'm not quite willing to call the new album 'garbage'. I just think for fans of them before it is pretty dissappointing. We expected and wanted better. And some take this dissappointment to the extreme.
Add this to their almost nauseationg over-exposure atm....especially of ballad type drivel like use somebody....and yeah it doesnt look good. But that doesn't completely counter the good music they made before. And depending on their setlist may not even be that painful.
I also take issue with the 'boring live' label, or 'i mind as well just pop in their CD'. Thats a crock. As stated somewhere above there are tons of bands that visually aren't that stimulating....but music is, after all, for the ears. As for popping in a cd vs. live.....its funny....but 'they sound just like the cd/album' has more times than not been used as a compliment. It's a hell of a lot better than 'they sounded like s**t', and usually implies they are at the very least musically tight. Other than jam band type 20 min improvs(which for the record....not my thing) this is generally regarded as a good thing. I think often this is just a well-worn excuse for 'i don't like em'/they're a sell-out mainstream band'. It just sounds better.
so I like em'....tho I have have issues with the current cd, and would likely see em' barring any crazy conflicts. But I'm also in the camp that they don't quite warrant a headling spot considering the huge-ness of past headliners. And to do so would be a bit of a dissappointment as it would appear to be simply trying to cash in on the fact that they're kind of a 'flavor of the moment', mainstream wise. Even bands i don't like that have headlined....like metallica....at least have put in far more work over the years than they have.

Oh, and what was Jay-Z's favorite song of the year? Well, it was a tie.
"I think my #1 favorite is the Kings of Leon, 'Use Somebody,' " he explains. "Actually, it's a tie between the two singles they had this year. 'Sex on Fire,' too. [Caleb Followill's] voice, and the heart and soul in that, was incredible for me."

Kings of Leon's big 2009 was validated Wednesday night at the Grammy Nominations telecast in Los Angeles. The Nashville rockers walked off with four noms, including ones for Song and Record of the Year for 'Use Somebody.' The track's monster success turned out to be a pleasant surprise for the band."When we wrote that song we didn't really think it would be as big as it's gotten," drummer Nathan Followill told the assembled press corps after the telecast, adding, "Man, these four, that's pretty crazy. For one song, that's what makes it even more special."
Jared Followill: "When we've made those text messaging ringtone commercials, we've really hit rock bottom."
It's not like they go to MTV and DEMAND them to put Use Somebody and Sex on Fire in everything. They are 100% more SICK of those two songs than anyone else is. They don't enjoy having "fans" come to their show who only stand up for those two songs and sit down for everything else and I wouldn't be surprised if they just stopped playing those songs now that they are done touring that album. This band headlining Bonnaroo, a festival that just a few years ago they would go to and just HANG OUT at, would be AMAZING. In their home state of Tennessee none the less. After everything they've gone through since the release of Only By The Night I'm sure they would kill it at roo.
And everyone who complains about them "changing their sound" needs to get over themselves. Any good band changes their sound, and their next album will have a completely different sound again. All of their albums have different sounds. I'd rather them have one album with pop overtones than be a band like Green Day and continually release the same songs with different lyrics.
But anyway, Kings of Leon would be phenomenal as a headliner or sub-headliner at roo. I think they deserve a headliner spot. I don't understand why everyone loves having old, washed up bands headline. "Ohh man! The Who with 2 of their original members!! Sign me up!!" "Oh man, 60 year old Bestie Boys who weren't even that cool when they were 20 years old!! Sign me up!!" "Oh man, a 60 year old Bruce Springsteen with his incredibly corny band!!! Sign me up!" "Oh man, U2 who have sold out about 100x as much as Kings of Leon and are entirely pop!!! Sign ME UP!!!!!"
This is the greatest ROCK band in a long, long time. They aren't going anywhere. Even if they don't get a headline spot this year, I'm sure they'll get one in the future. Maybe you'll all love them when they're 60 years old.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
