all this stuff about "selling out" (when they are selling $100 dollar t-shirts, is there anyway to debate that?), or changing their sound is completely beyond the point. i have seen them 3 times, including once at roo, and the bottom line is they are a snoozer of a live band. might as well just listen to the album. as long as there is something else i can do while they are playing, that's all i care about.
and if the worst case scenario happens, sleeping before late night is fine with me anyway. so just let it be, and trust in the roo.

This is the greatest ROCK band in a long, long time. They aren't going anywhere. Even if they don't get a headline spot this year, I'm sure they'll get one in the future. Maybe you'll all love them when they're 60 years old.
This is genius.
The conviction, the absurd prophetic comments! Somehow, you manage to sound like an actual obsessed 19-year-old Tiger Beat subscriber.

I stand by what I said....
I like KOL. They are a fine band with a good following but, I stress this again, THEY ARE NOT HEADLINER MATERIAL! Look at past headliners, they have either had MEGA success or have achieved legendary jam band status. They can play with the best of them...just not in my opinion in a headlining spot.
As far as someone calling them the greatest rock band in a long time, The White Stripes, The Black Crows, Metallica, Tool, Rage, A perfect Circle, Foo Fighters, Weezer and MANY others disagree with you

All opinions aside, let's think logically...KOL are 'Roo veterans, they've blown up from their last album (for better or for worse), they're from Tennessee, and they've headlined Glastonbury. With that being said, I think they deserve a spot high on the undercard, maybe a late-night or pre-headliner. KOL may have "earned" headliner status with record sales but I, personally, don't think they've earned it. Although, there would have to be a big conflict for me to miss the show.
For the record, I've enoyed all of their albums. Nothing has been better than Aha Shake Heartbreak though.

This is the only response on here worth responding to. Everyone else just sounds like posers who will love anything Thom Yorke throws out no matter how repetitive, incoherent and ambient it is. But hey, that stuff is just so deep, heartfelt and meaningful. People like me 'just can't understand'
Looking at recent headliners, I'd say KoL has every right to be one of the top billed bands. They are undoubtedly more talented than the Beastie Boys EVER were. KoL right now is a better band than NIN is right now. In '08 friggin Jack Johnson and Kanye West were billed higher than everyone on here claims KoL should be. The trend pretty much continues down the list. And considering their Tennessee roots, KoL would be a huge draw. Much bigger than people on here realize.
As for your list of "better" rock bands, I wouldn't even qualify bands like Weezer and Foo Fighters as rock. I mean, if Only By The Night is too much pop, then everything those bands ever did was too much pop. The White Stripes had 2 members and one barely knows how to play her instrument. Rage had one good album in my book. Haven't heard enough of the other three bands to judge.
But with that said, the oldest member of KoL is 30 or 31 I believe (their drummer). Caleb just turned 28. Their lead guitarist and bass player are even younger. This band has A LOONG time left and I don't get the point in waiting until they're older to give them a top spot. Nix that. There is no point in waiting till they're older. They have already reached the point of MEGA success and 5-10 more years of MEGA success isn't going to make them any more than what they are now, it'll just make them older.
Once again, I don't understand this board's infatuation with old, past their prime bands.

NIN is better and Beastie Boys were as good as it got back in the day. Both their live shows blow away KOL.

2) I like the White Stripes, but I wouldn't put them among rock greats because of the simplicity. And some of Jack White's lyrics are too pretentious.
3) NIN, Springsteen, The Who, Phish, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Beastie Boys, The Dead, The Rolling Stones, and many more.
I'd like to see plenty of those old bands, but I'd rather see a huge band that is putting out their A game CURRENTLY. I'm a HUGE Bob Dylan fan, but seeing him now isn't the same as it would've been seeing him when he could actually sing coherently. I don't get why everyone is so adamant about needing all the headliners to have been around for 20 years and far past their peaks.

hahhahahahahhahahahaha
Nothing says talent like singing every song you've ever made for 40 years the same style and yelling the last word of every line

I liked Aha Shake Heartbreak. the end. but no seriously, if 'Roo puts them in a headliner slot, I feel like it would be a waste of headliner where someone else could be. If nothing is in conflict with their show, I'd probably check it out. I definitely won't stay for the whole set though.
I'd never seen NIN before last year, but they seemed to be at the top of their game when I saw them. The band was firing on all cylinders even with Reznor fighting off a cold. The musicians that Reznor got to back him, Finck, Justin MJ, Rubin, were all tremendous as well. The music, light show, and sound (even in a tinny amphitheater) were all top notch. I know plenty of people dislike NIN, but to say KOL is a better live band is ridiculous.

If you want simple check out KOL, but there is nothing simple about Jack's guitar playing.

I can agree with you on the Dead and the Who, mostly because they're not really the same with key members missing, but I'd still rather see them on the poster than KOL.

What it comes down to is that KOL is peaking in popularity, not performance. All the artists you mentioned have deep catalogs and years of experience that make them great performers. There are some old bands who don't still have it, you mentioned Bob Dylan, but ones like Neil Young, NIN, and Bruce all still play tremendous live shows. Are their new(er) bands who I would like to see headline and for Bonnaroo to take a chance on? Yes. Arcade Fire and White Stripes come to mind, but KOL is not on that level musically.

Holy shit fuck.
There are plenty of people that would rather see KoL live than NIN White Stripes and Beasties. They just happen to wear glitter lip gloss and can text 400 words per minute.

hahahhaa yeah the Beasties' fan base is full of real cool dudes. Backwards hats, baggy pants and wife beaters.
Other dude: I'm not goin' back and forth with the 123 thing, but nothing is more simple than the White Stripes' most popular song, Seven Nation Army. Pretty much all of their stuff is extremely simple. KoL's first two albums have a very unique sound in their last two albums they have improved their instrumental talents greatly.
In terms of live shows, it depends what you're into. I DON'T dig it when bands try to get fans to clap and sing along. I'd rather the band be into what they're doing and making sure they sound as good as they can. And I'm not into "fluff" stories that bands tell just to pass the time either. I don't need them to pretend to give a shit about the audience as long as they give a shit about how they sound. And I don't believe that bands show that they give a shit about how they sound by jumping around like Bruce & Bono.
