There are plenty of people that would rather see KoL live than NIN White Stripes and Beasties. They just happen to wear glitter lip gloss and can text 400 words per minute.
hahahhaa yeah the Beasties' fan base is full of real cool dudes. Backwards hats, baggy pants and wife beaters.
I like the White Stripes, but I wouldn't put them among rock greats because of the simplicity. And some of Jack White's lyrics are too pretentious.
So? What does simplicity have to do with quality? Some of the best rock is the stuff that cuts right through the bulls**t and strips it back down to the basics. Take pretty much any blues musician or punk band. The blues is often little more than some simple strumming and storytelling set to the music. Some of the best punk is just three or four chords played very loudly, and very aggressively. Quality doesn't depend so much on what you play, or how complicated it is; it's about how much you feel it in your soul. As long as you mean what you play, then it doesn't matter as much how well you can play.
Oh, and, pretentious lyrics... such as? Can you give an example of some pretentious lyrics, and explain to us why you think they're pretentious?
Him thinking he deserves his ice cream colder and a little cream soda is quite pretentious
1. Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance or merit than is actually possessed; making an exaggerated outward display; ostentatious, showy ???

Kings of Leon: Your Thoughts?
I think there are more votes in here for them not to headline bonnaroo.... this being, not because of disliking the band... but setting the bar higher than KoL for headliners! My vote is for setting the bar way way up!

I still don't see them as being a true headliner. I see the schedule unfolding similar to last year with KOL taking the Beastie Boys timeslot. With a yet to be solidified performer taking over phish's timeslot

Some simplicity isn't a problem. But with some simplicity I'd prefer a little something extra somewhere else. I don't find Jack White above average lyrically and since Meg White doesn't add anything, it's pretty much a Jack White solo project. For a solo project to be among the GREATEST rock artists I'd look for something extraordinary. Lyrics, vocals or instrumental. I don't see it with the White Stripes. I like a lot of their stuff, but it isn't rip roaring stuff like early KoL (see Red Morning Light, Four Kicks, Happy Alone, even though I know you won't and probably haven't heard anything other than Sex on Fire and Use Somebody).
As for pretentious lyrics, I was just referring to this one verse from Icky Thump that always makes me want to puke:
White Americans, what? Nothing better to do? Why don't you kick yourself out You're an immigrant too
Alright Jack White, why don't you just hit me over the head with a sledge hammer? Seriously, you have a Joe Strummer picture as your avatar so I imagine you have respect for how great messages can be in lyrics when they are transmitted in a subtle, mindful way. Dumbing down a message and just saying it like that is lazy and pretentious.

You guys i know KOL sold out and because of that i dont want them as a headliner BUT give them the props for being the most badass garage roc band pre 2006.

I guess since i started up the whole "Bunch of bands better banter" that I should join back in. Here is my point on KOL headlining. The average fan looks at the Bonnaroo lineup and can instantly identify the "headliners" as either a HUGE draw (Pearl Jam, Phish, Tool for examples), A Classic band/act that many consider timeless (The Police, Springsteen, Tom Petty) or a jam band that can rock your socks off (The Dead, Phish, DMB, Widespread Panic for some examples.)
It is not that I do not like KOL. They are a good up and coming band (MMJ is also in the same boat) and maybe they could, someday DOWN the road, headline the Roo. The same can be said for MMJ as well and maybe even MGMT. However, having said that, there success is just not their yet long term (Heck, they just started getting somewhat popular amongst mainstream America and they are not a jam band that could fit the bill yet).
As for rock bands better than them (like I orginally stated) there are realistically probably more than 15-20 better but that does not make them a weaker band or any less desiable at the Roo...just not a headliner....High up on the list, yes...but No to headliner material unless Bonnaroo is lowering its standards since festivals everywhere are pulling the plug.

Everyone has heard their early stuff. The majority of the people on these boards seem to have liked their early stuff. The problem is the new stuff and the current path of awfulness they appear to be taking. Oh, and the fashion line is hilarious.

I'm certainly no garage rock expert, but you are incredibly wrong.

i loved aha shake heartbreak and would have paid someone to listen to it with me back then, and it seemed like no one cared. now i will pay double that amount to never hear use somebody again.

Explain to me how I'm incredibely wrong? have you listened to aha shake heartbreak? btw I'm coming as a long time poster on infobury, this site is cool because im getting good info but you guys should be nicer in how you say stuff. Peace and love brothers and sisters.
2) I like the White Stripes, but I wouldn't put them among rock greats because of the simplicity. And some of Jack White's lyrics are too pretentious.
3) NIN, Springsteen, The Who, Phish, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Beastie Boys, The Dead, The Rolling Stones, and many more.
I'd like to see plenty of those old bands, but I'd rather see a huge band that is putting out their A game CURRENTLY. I'm a HUGE Bob Dylan fan, but seeing him now isn't the same as it would've been seeing him when he could actually sing coherently. I don't get why everyone is so adamant about needing all the headliners to have been around for 20 years and far past their peaks.
1. Trent Reznor has more musical talent in his pimkie finger than exists in all of KOL
2 A KOL fan saying the WS have pretentious lyrics is one of the funniest things I have ever seen
3 You listed a bunch of musical legends, that KOL does not even deserve to play on the same day with. If you really think KOL is better than all them go to Coachella, or Pitchfork or some other festival for hipster tweens, and leave music appreciation for those that have the ability.
4 Like I said I live in Nashville and have seen them 3 or 4 times since '04, and never once have they shown they have the musical talent to headline a festival the size Bonnaroo.
5 If they play they will play on the smaller stage while an actual musician plays on the big stage so I am just not that worried about it anymore though.
I'm certainly no garage rock expert, but you are incredibly wrong.

You are the one who decided to join this board and educate us on how great KOL is, dont be upset if you get some push back flower brother.
Also I would like to point out that so far members of this board would rather see Lady Gaga than KOL headline at a 2 to ratio.

There's nothing wrong with being sensitive and i was in agreement with not wanting to see KOL headline i was just stating that aha shake heartbreak was an outsanding album. and KOL pre 2006 was a great band. and who in the world would want lady gaga at this festival?
Well I saw them in 04, 0, and 07 and they sucked every time, and apparently 75% of the board would rather have Gaga if we are going to get a pop act headlining. KOL has no show to speak of, and offers nothing than the same music on their albums turned up to an ear bleeding volume. They are not going to kill Bonnaroo, but "roo can do a lot better in the headliner/ preheadliner dept. imo.

That alone shows that you have NO clue what you're talking about. Either you know nothing about KoL or have no clue what pretentious means. I'm guessing both.
The line that I pointed out would make anyone who appreciates powerful lyrics cringe. KoL doesn't go for any sort of pseudo intellectual lyrics like Jack White. They don't try to have any sort of message. If you want lyrics to have a message that's fine, but actually take some time to make the message in the least bit original and well thought out. It's like if Bob Dylan just wrote a simple dumbed down line like "politicians use people" instead of writing the entire song "Only a Pawn In Their Game".
Half of KoL's lyrics are about prostitutes, getting drunk and sleeping with underage girls. Not exactly "White Americans got nothin' better to do? Why don't you kick yourself out, you're an immigrant too."

yea i saw them at lolla last year they sounded like their albums. they were solid but i agree 100% not headliner material id pay 30 bucks to see kol i want my headliners to be big. I would really dig DMB, Neil, & Paul simon with further as a pre headliner or (preferabbly) late night that would be my lineup and they all have some rumors behind them.
