POSTED: 4:09 P.M. JAN. 22, 2010 Rothbury festival called off Michigan rock event a no-go for 2010 BY BRIAN MCCOLLUM
Organizers have pulled the plug on the Rothbury festival, the much-touted rock and environmental fest that drew tens of thousands to western Michigan the past two summers.
Rothbury is a victim of xxxx, said Carrie Lombardi of Colorado's Madison House Presents, which promoted the festival with AEG Live.
The festival launched on Fourth of July weekend in 2008, garnering positive reviews for both its music lineup and green focus, including its progressive use of sustainable technologies.
Organizers managed to reprise Rothbury last summer amid financial struggles for the Double JJ Ranch, the fest's lush rural site in Grant Township, north of Muskegon.
The event embraced an unconventional music approach that spanned both rootsy rock (Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews Band, Allman Brothers Band) and edgy electronic-dance acts that played well into morning hours.
After an initial embrace from residents near the Double JJ, rumblings of discontent began to emerge in recent months. Officials with Grant Township were considering the adoption of ordinances that would have forced a 1 a.m. noise curfew.
Official attendances were never announced, but Michigan State Police and other officials estimated that about 35,000 people attended each year.
"All in all, the creative act is not performed by the artist alone.. the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act." -- Marcel Duchamp
During the past three years, all of us involved with ROTHBURY have greatly appreciated the tremendous outpouring of support for the future of the festival. For 2010, we have had to make the tough decision to postpone our efforts. A contributing factor in our decision is that, due to various artists’ recording and touring schedules, we now believe that timing will not allow for us to assemble the cutting edge roster that everyone has come to expect from ROTHBURY. The result for this year is that we are not able to move forward with the integrity and high standards that we demand from ourselves and for the festival.
Despite the 2010 postponement, we intend to move toward continuing ROTHBURY in 2011. This event is something very special, and we are unwilling to potentially tarnish what ROTHBURY is, and can become, by working under conditions that will produce anything less than a magical experience.
ROTHBURY is more than a festival. It is a mission intended to discover strength in community, and what it means to be a large-scale sustainable event in these times. Our efforts are certainly not coming to an end.

that last line is bullcrap. if it were all about community they would still be having the festival this year. they have lots of people that have become attached to this fest and they are not supporting that community by not having it this year. sounds like they were just not able to book the acts they wanted, so they threw in the towel.

It is important for us to thank the people of Michigan, Oceana County, The Village of Rothbury, Grant Township, and the Double JJ Resort. Also, we thank our team members, volunteers, creative contributors, media partners, and sponsors. We have made many friendships that will last a lifetime.
To all who attended the first two years of ROTHBURY we thank you for the soul you gave the event. Those times entered rarified air because of your energy.
For their part, Bonnaroo organizers act as exemplary corporate citizens. Last year, they made $190,000 in charitable contributions to the community, including $30,000 for a skate park in Manchester. Bonnaroo also pays for damage to roads and for overtime costs of law enforcement officers and medical personnel—they even feed them. But county officials contend that the sales tax profit, around $100,000, largely goes towards paying “hidden” costs like meeting time, planning and zoning activities, staff training and vehicle depreciation.
But there’s more behind county complaints than just a fervent desire to break even on Bonnaroo. Coffee County is facing some substantial financial obstacles that have nothing to do with the festival. The county is looking at approximately $100 million in school construction needs. Overcrowding in its prison is so bad that the state has decertified it pending an expansion. With little economic base to draw on to fix those problems, and with a highly successful festival making millions of dollars within its jurisdiction, it’s not surprising that eyes turn to Bonnaroo.
Nor is it surprising that county officials sought to address their budget shortcomings by singling out Bonnaroo with a giant tax. To the tune of 8% per ticket, the county originally aimed to raise about $750,000 annually for itself. Combined with the state’s 9% sales tax, one of the highest in the nation, the proposal amounted to a 17% tax on the event. Though the proposal was lowered to 5% (a combined 14%), Capps says the arbitrary tax still would have amounted to the largest tax of its kind on any such event in the nation. He makes it clear such a proposal endangers the future of the festival in Coffee County.
"Municipalities and counties throughout America are having budget problems,” Capps says. “Coffee County is no exception. It’s just a human tendency to look at this thing and say ‘This could help solve our problems.’ That’s a dangerous thing, though. You can get into a situation there of killing the goose that lays the golden egg.”
Well, this sucks - and there go my plans for this summer, too. I'd wanted to go for the past two years and I really thought this year would be the year... guess not. At least they didn't try to pull a Langerado and move it to Detroit.
10klf too.... I'm a DMB fan and well he played rothbury 08 and 10klf 09 (but there wasn't a "big" lineup really.) rumored to be a roo this year hope this path doesn't follow him...just a theory

I highly doubt that DMB is the reason for festival cancellations.
Though if you're a stats geek you could obtain some (relevant) data and run a regression analysis...

I felt like a geek when I read this and realized that I know way too much about regression analysis.

Here's the official press release:
FESTIVAL ORGANIZERS ANNOUNCE ROTHBURY POSTPONEMENT FOR 2010 EVENT
January 22, 2010 - Today, festival organizers for the ROTHBURY music festival announced that they will not host a 2010 event.
According to event producers Madison House Presents and AEG Live, a contributing factor in the decision is that, due to various artists’ recording and touring schedules, timing will not allow them to assemble the cutting edge roster that has been associated with ROTHBURY. Madison House Presents’ Jeremy Stein explains, “The result for this year is that we are not able to move forward with the integrity and high standards that we demand from ourselves and for the festival.”
Despite the 2010 postponement, organizers intend to move toward continuing ROTHBURY in 2011. According to Stein, "This event is something very special, and we are unwilling to potentially tarnish what ROTHBURY is, and can become, by working under conditions that will produce anything less than a magical experience. Our efforts are certainly not coming to an end."
I've planned events before (nothing to this scale) and there comes a time when it feels like the whole world is against you. Add problems booking to a still weak economy and feeling like you can't get the acts you want and sometimes throwing it in makes sense.
Hope they come back because hubby and I still wanted to check it out.
I think it's an awful shame that of all states Michigan wasn't supporting something that was actually bringing money into the state!
That being said, does this have a direct effect on Roo lineup?
