I cannot believe that Jayson Werth got that much money...but, the Nats DO have to overpay to attract bigger-name free agents. There is no doubt in my mind that they will be regretting that contract in two or three years, though. Werth is not an $18 mil/year player. Wouldn't be surprised if Crawford gets $20 million a year now, with Werth getting such a huge contract. That is a ton of money, but I still hope the Red Sox land Crawford, especially with Werth off the market now...don't want another year of Mike Cameron as an everday player. Can't hit for shit.
Rumor is that Adrian Gonzalez and his agent have already more or less agreed to a 7-year, $154-$161 million (depending on the source) extension with the Red Sox and they are just waiting until Opening Day to announce it both for luxury tax reasons and so they can make sure A-Gon's shoulder is fine. Stoked about this.

If the Red Sox are competitive every year for the next seven (and I don't see how they won't be), the Crawford signing will have been worth it. Even if we don't win one.

Meh. As we saw from the Yankees 2001-2008 tenure, simply having big name/highly paid stars doesn't necessarily amount to anything.
As for BIGGEST BUST EVER, you gotta give that to the recent Mets. Holy hell, those teams have been stacked, and they kept bringing in the biggest names they could find only to watch failure.
If the Red Sox get one ring over the next 7 it'd be worth it - hell, so much can happen during any one baseball season (see: the 2010 SF Giants) that you never know, which is one reason why baseball is the best.
BIGGEST BUST EVER is arguable/debatable as of late with all these mega signings.

With teams like the Giants winning world series there is no leverage to establish a salary cap. It is pretty clear imo that teams can't be bought.
Edit: Even the Yankees win world series due more to their homegrown talent then big free agents. I think the reason is because if the player is really that good then teams don't let them go.
I think the Werth deal alone means we need a salary cap. There is no reason for a guy like him making 126M a year. Watch that be a Barry Zito bad contract. Speaking of Zito, he got the same contract.
Crawford making 142M is ridiculous. He's good, but I don't think he is 20M good. I'm happy Boston got him, but the money is just getting out of control.

^I totally agree that players' salaries are definitely getting out of control. And I do think there should probably be some sort of cap in baseball, as much as I'd hate to see the Sox lose our "competitive advantage" haha...It'd be more fair, though, and it might feel more rewarding when we won the WS (that second part is doubtful, though).

In the past 10 years there has been 9 different champions and 14 different teams to play in the world series vs. 7 different super bowl champions and 14 different teams. The NBA, which utilizes a soft cap only has 5 different champions in that same time span.
