WTF is a LOOGY? It's been a while since I've kept up with stats in baseball, some of these acronyms you guys are throwing out there are blowing my mind.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

assuming lee's contract is a flat 20 per year philly’s payroll is at $166MM not counting pre-arb players. that’s gotta put them into luxury tax territory

5 years, $120 million
So, a little less than $24 million per year (depending on his signing bonus).
Anyone who says now that the Yankees and their fans weren't desperate for Cliff Lee is lying through their teeth. They wanted him and they needed him. Now, they have a mediocre rotation to go with their aging lineup. Red Sox will take the AL East next year.
If the Sox play the Phils in the WS next year (still a longshot, as we all know the baseball playoffs are a total crapshoot), that'd be a hell of a Series. Everybody's going nuts about the Phils' rotation, but I like what the Sox will put out there in a seven-game series as well, especially when you consider Beckett's previous playoff successes. I think Lester, Buchholz, and Beckett can compete against Halladay, Oswalt, and Lee.

I know I'm being petty here, but I'm a little peeved that the Yanks grabbed Russell Martin over us. I think he's going to be an excellent low-risk gamble, especially on just a one-year contract. I really wanted us to grab him, because I don't trust Salty next year, even with Tek sharing time with him. We missed out on Scott Downs, too, who would've been great for our bullpen.
Still had a phenomenal offseason, though, without a doubt.

Well this sucks. I am pretty positive the Yanks won't get Greinke due to his anxiety issues, he'd lose his mind in NY. I won't say they're screwed though, whatever big name pitcher is available at the deadline they will probably go ridiculously hard to get, and their lineup is still pretty sick.
Edit: Isn't Brandon Webb available? I hear he's not even close to 100%, but would be able to participate in spring training. Could be worth the risk to get him healthy by mid season.

I'm already planning a road trip up to Philly for the Red Sox series with my buddy who is a huge Phills fan. I would go for the Cubs series, but it is the exact same four days as Bonnaroo!

Hamels was a better pitcher in '08 and '09 but not '10. Hamels xFIP was still better last year. Oswalt just got a little bit lucky last year according to batted ball data. Oswalt's not the same pitcher he was from about 02-07.
No question that Hamels was the better pitcher in 2008. Ultimately, I think they're pretty comparable pitchers, but it would not surprise me in the least if Hamels has a better year this year than Oswalt, since he's arguably done it twice before. Granted, Oswalt has clearly been the better pitcher of the two the last two years, but I don't really think Hamels has regressed necessarily.
Which pitcher would you rather have? The 33 year old coming off a strange resurgence or 27 year old that has been consistent and has slightly improved. I don't buy a 33 year old getting better in the post-steroid era. Also I've hated Oswalt forever, so I'm biased.

Oswalt was great for a long time and people still think he's an elite pitcher. He won't be an elite pitcher. Hamels was victimized by poor luck and poor run support in 09, so people think he had a down year. I hate Oswalt. Hamels will be better in 11 and later.
That's basically what I was trying to say.

Totally agree. Hamels has the potential to be a Cy Young winner one day. His circle change is absolutely nasty. People just freaked out over Oswalt because he did a 180 when he went to Philly midway through the season. I had him on my Fantasy team, and I was about to drop him until he went to Philly.

I think they will have all 4 guys starting in the playoffs, but if they did a 3 man rotation for some reason I would not be surprised to see Hamels out there over Oswalt by the postseason next year.
