Jesus Christ. That lineup is ridiculous. Um...I really want to to go to this...I hope it's a possibility. The boy and I are doing Electric Zoo in NYC though...so who knows if I will have the funds/off time.
Anybody have any details on this fest? I don't know much about it. Is it at multiple venues like SXSW is? I know it's not camping...so cheap places to stay? Are there latenights?
^ The festival is in a big park called Zilker Park. I don't know much about hotels, hostels or camping in the area. The music usually ends around 10, and there are late night shows at clubs around town. Bars close at 2 in TX and the music will go close to then. Also, it can be a pain to get from the festival to a night show.

My goal is to go to another festival this year, and since I passed on The Hangout I still need to add one. This may be it. I love the undercard, and the headliners interest me. And I've always wanted to make it to ACL.

You can actually camp in South Austin and bike in; I know some folks who do that every year.

I would keep your eyes open for 3 day passes. ACL has a bunch of them held up in those travel package deals. If they don't sell all the travel packages you could very well see some more 3 day passes hit the market.
The above camping arrangement is doable but that bike ride is about 10 to 15 miles. Its not a huge one but some people may not feel like doing it after being out at the festival all day. Luckily it is in October now and the 100 degree temps usually don't make it into October. September would make it a whole different story.

i went to ACL from 05-08, so this is based on my experiences in those years
the festival itself is at Zilker Park, just south of downtown Austin. i usually took a cab there when i lived in Austin because there's no really close parking, and splitting one with 3 other people is super cheap. the shuttles are really easy, too...they pick up at a parking garage somewhere around 14th street i think, and they're free.
as for places to stay...check out craigslist austin. lots of people rent out their apartments or houses for the weekend, so you might be able to find some cheap place where you could cook and all that. just don't stay anywhere near Rundberg and i-35 unless you're looking to buy meth or heroin. most places on the west side along mopac (loop 1) are good to go, though.
the latenights will be at several different venues, but will mostly be concentrated to downtown (usually La Zona Rosa, Antones, and Stubbs have the best shows, and they're all great venues for shows). they'll release the list closer to the fest, and then it's a free for all on tickets.
security usually isn't bad at all, but i wouldn't get too cocky about it until you've been through at least once. we've gotten in a 6 pack of beer before, though, so who knows. it's definitely a B.Y.O.D. environment, but as i found at The Hangout this past weekend, even city fests can produce some good stuff.
if you have anymore questions, i'd be happy to try and answer them

from the ACL TV show blog:
Austin City Limits has four scheduled tapings around the dates of the Austin City Limits Music Festival:
Monsters of Folk: Wednesday, October 6th Sonic Youth: Thursday, October 7th Band of Horses: Saturday, October 9th The National: Monday, October 11th
These tapings will be held in the Austin City Limits studio (as usual), and any announcements regarding ticket availability and giveaways for the public will be posted on the ACL blog approximately one week before each taping. The sets will air as part of ACL’s 36th season on PBS, premiering this fall. Exact airdates are TBD - we’ll post details as we get them sorted out. We have a few more tapings in the works, so stay tuned for word on those as well…
If you get the chance to attend one of these, I highly recommend it.
Wish I'd paid more attention to this before it sold out...figured I'd probably do Outside Lands or voodoo as my second fest this year, but not much impressed wth either lineup so far and ACL middle-tier is very nice...headliners just didn't catch my eye when it first came out...blah

You should come to Voodoo. It has a similar feel to ACL. I guarantee you that you'll have an amazing time. The music is stellar and the food is to die for. NoLa during Halloween is a riot. Bourbon Street is beyond fun. For me, Voodoo is the best festival around (certainly in the hotel non-camping category).

I must concur with all of this.
I have been to both, and I completely agree about the similar feel. Except one thing, Austin is awesome, but it ain't no N'awlins. Dirtier, stickier, sexier, debauchery encouraged
Plus, Bourbon and the Quarter make Voodoo a festival that can run 24 hours a day, if you want it to.

Amen brother. The drunken debauchery on Bourbon and in the rest of the Quarter late night after the festival makes it a very exciting and sexy time. One more reason Voodoo gets my vote for all those who are unable to attend ACL. There is something almost magical about NoLa so while I adore Austin and ACL I still think Voodoo is more bang for the buck. Plus, all the Halloween costumes make it that much more fun. :-)
Oh I went to Voodoo last year and really enjoyed it, plus New Orleans was awesome! Had my fiancee along and between the rain/cold and not so well tended port-o-potties she was pretty miserable, so that dragged me a little, though understood her situation. Sure I'd have more fun by myself or with a different crowd.
The lineup just doesn't impress me much this year. Ozzy would be cool to see, but I'm not a huge fan or anything. Muse was awesome with U2 and I'd def like to see them again. The rest of the current top of the lineup is just meh for me. MGMT sucks live, Weezer not much better. Don't care much for Hot Chip, Drake or any of the big DJs up there. Metric and Interpol would be cool, but not enough to fly down there from Virginia!
Last year I was stoked for Jane's Addiction, Lenny Kravitz, Eminem, Panic, Wolfmother, and Silversun Pickups..plus again thought it would be cool to at least see Kiss..add to that Black Keys and Gogol Bordello are some of my favorite bands
Just seems lacking this year with the initial release, at least for my tastes, which are pretty wide already! Add another 3 big artists and a few decent mid-tier stuff and maybe I change my mind...Soundgarden alone would probably have been enough honestly..never seen them play...so was hoping those rumors were true..maybe still will..Phish would have been cool and saw them thrown around..couldn't get tickets for my local show....who knows
anyways, Voodoo is def an awesome fest in a great location and I'm sure I'll go again, but they'll have to make some pretty big adds for me this year
Anyone know how/where I can get a 3-day pass for ACL?
The ACL forum has people buying and selling passes for face value only. If you keep an eye out there you may get lucky. Other options are e-bay and craigs list, but you'll likely pay more than face there. In all likelihood, you will probably be able to get a 3 day pass from someone outside the festival gates if you're willing to chance it.

Meh.
Wonder if Black Lips will get a separate set from Almighty Defenders though? Interesting.
*edit*
Huh. I guess King Khan & BBQ broke up? But the Almighty Defenders are still together? Still listed on the lineup anyway...curious curious. I'll be bummed if the Defenders call it quits before I get to see them.
i am anxious to get the schedule for this puppy. my friend kate is getting married that saturday in smithville, which is like 50 miles from austin. i've done a wedding outside austin on the saturday of ACL before, just wondering who exactly i'm going to have to miss. fingers crossed, nobody i'll be toooooo sad about.

Looks like I have some choices to make: Lucero or Gaslight Anthem? Manchester Orchestra or Mayer Hawthorne? Monsters of Folk or Gogol Bordello (a 6:30 start time for MoF would've made this much easier)? Norah or The National? All in all not too bad conflict wise.
I'm amazed ... Monsters of Folk are playing the small Austin Ventures stage.
Seriously my favorite lil stage there. For those of you who haven't been, it's a little stage built into a natural rock formation in the park. Very cool.
I was on the rail for Robyn Hitchcock there last year. Good times.
Hypothetical schedule if I was going (which I'm not, two out-of-town weddings and the MMJ residency are controlling my October this year):
Friday:
Gospel Stars Wesley Bray & the Disciples of Joy (always nice to start out the weekend in the tent) Soft Pack Mountain Goats Girls Black Keys The Sword Spoon Sonic Youth Phish
Saturday:
Caitlin Rose Heavenly Voices Basia Bulat The Very Best Jones Family Singers Bear in Heaven Lucero Black Lips Beats Antique Local Natives *chicken cone* MoF (not particularly interested in them outside of Jim James, but figure they're gonna do something interesting with a 2-hour slot) *aftershow and bbq*
Sunday:
Buddy & the Straight Way Travelers Warpaint Maxim Ludwig, maybe? Frank Turner or Blind Pilot...indifferent. Devendra Banhart (sticky conflict with Dawes and Portugal. The Man, but lots of other chances to see them throughout the year) Gayngs Yeasayer Midlake Martin Sexton Band of Horses Richard Thompson *aftershow, Shiner Black*
