Sunday is mostly all bands I have seen before, may consider selling my ticket to hang out in Austin on that day. I have 3 single days.
I am really hoping MIA will step up her game before then, she has been rather disappointing at most of her shows lately. At least we finally get a Phish show in Texas though. After that Monsters of Folk is my biggest set to see for the weekend.
Im pumped to see that there are a fair amount of Inforoosters going to ACL this year! I have a 3-day pass, and a couple of my friends do as well. I'll be staying with family who've been the past few years, so we wont be completely Newb. Ive been to Austin a couple times to visit, and love the town, so I can't imagine that the shows/setting/atmosphere won't be fanTAStic.

I'm from close to Atlanta. Are you driving or flying?
I'll be flying out of ATL and into Austin. Delta is having a special right now (expires on the 24th) for a 1-way ticket to Austin for $119. I will be getting those soon! If you're interested in flying, I can let you know what flights we end up on and our seats so you will have some traveling buddies!

Yeah, let me know what kind of deal you get and who you fly. Thanks!
OK, so I just found out today that I'm going.... (yay!!!!) but since I've never been to Austin, I'm 137% clueless about where to stay & what to expect. If anybody has any tips to share (esp. where NOT to stay!) will you please PM me? I'll CoCo the hell outta ya, I promise! Thanks, y'all!

whatever you do, DO NOT stay anywhere near i-35 and Rundberg. it's notorious for being a junkie hangout. if i had my choice, i'd pick something south of downtown, or on the west side off MoPac (also known as loop 1). several of the hotels offer shuttle service, but taxis are always ready and waiting at the hotels as well. and there's always the free shuttle service. usually it picks up around 14th street (if i remember correctly), and you should be able to park your car in the nearby garage (for free) and hop on the bus.
just know that no matter which way you choose to get to the fest, you will probably always have at least a 30 minute wait on your mode of transportation unless you get out early, so keep that in mind if you plan on doing any kind of aftershow.

YO! Okay so on Tuesday night we attempted to get the $119 one-way tix from Delta and they were sold out; the new price for ONE ticket basically went from about $260 to $460. So we did some research and San Antonio is only about 2 hours away so we got $79 one-way tix from there, and also we got a car for only $15/day. The price to rent a car out of the Austin airport was like $40/day. So in the end, we got 3 air tix and a car for the weekend for less than 1.5 air tix into Austin. Sweet deal I have no idea what the current deals are for Delta where you're at - but we get insane rates since their base hub is out of Atlanta. I'll PM you the details if you'd like to try and get on our plane!

The presale passwords are the bands name backwards if anyone is interested. I was thinking Deadmau5, but its $48. monsters of Folk is $42, but I don't plan on leaving Phish early and wouldn't want to miss any of it. Still need to see if any of my friends are going. Last year I went to the STS9 aftershow at stubb's and ended up walking there from zilker park. That is a long walk after all day at ACL.
Thanks for the hotel tips, y'all! Just out of curiosity (I'm an ACL newb who hasn't been to TX in eons!) - is it cheaper to do the airport car rental thing or take taxis/shuttles? I'm still undecided about lodging...
I'm flying in w/an ultra frugal friend: he wants to CouchSurf but I'm fine w/a cheap hotel. What worries me is renting a car & never needing it besides to/from airport. But...if we stay in South Austin, is it a pain to get shuttled to the venue? Thanx in advance!

if you're in south austin, getting anywhere near the venue isn't going to be hard. taxis will be running nonstop that weekend because they know they'll rake in the cash. however, the airport is good ways from downtown, so you might want to just get the cheapest/smallest car rental you can and just be done with it. you might find it's handier in case you find you need to make a trip to the grocery store or something of the like.
having said that, i've actually done the CouchSurf thing. i've both hosted and been hosted, and they were both good experiences for the most part.

You can take the bus downtown from the airport for like $1 and it takes maybe half an hour. Where are you staying in south Austin? In my experience cabs can be a real pain to get, especially right after the fest lets out and at bar time.
Also, Sassbox and I stayed at the Motel 6 off I-35 for SXSW '08 and despite the sunflower seeds we found in the bed, we both thought it was just fine...and we are notorious princesses The only thing I didn't like about staying that far north is that you definitely need a car because buses don't run that late and cabs add up.

cabs are a pain to get late at night, but as for getting to the venue, and being picked up from the fest, it's never been an issue for me other than a wait. and i wasn't trying to discourage hotels off the east side, just trying to discourage them in the bad areas. i'm all for cheap and slightly seedy as long as it's clean enough :-p

I'm flying in Thursday nite. My couch-surfing fell thru, so I'll be scrambling tonite to find a hotel that's NOT in the seedy part of town! (Which explains why rates are so cheap around Highland Mall.)
Loves it. I'll be there with my 2 ATL friends, and my ATX cousin. Can we find a place to brunch in the same area as where we park and walk to the shuttle at 4th & Guadalupe? I am SO down for Texas breakfast burritos...

I'm not sure this place (www.TacoXpress.com) is near the shuttle (I think it's closer to the Whole Foods across the river from the park?) but a friend in Austin highly recommends it. I was skeptical 'til I saw the blue sign - it's PERFECT for what Idio calls us "crazy 'Roo people"!
