Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
We could make that happen because shaggyforte, danger7 and I are all Sinfonians, along with another brother from UGA whose handle I can't remember, along with 10 of the 16 other people I camped with this year. Finding a trumpeteer is the easy part, finding a trumpeteer that is willing to bring their horn out into that heat all weekend is a completely different ball of wax.
My sis is a lurker for a while now 'jenjen'....and I have a feeling she'll not be as lurky this year ~ I can almost guarantee that she'd bring one of her trumpets out for this one. She is awesome like that - and she already told me that she wants to help out with any memorial stuff this next year on the farm.
Also - I share the thoughts up there with cdevaney - I wondered about a permanent memorial in Centeroo for this. We can make it happen - and those who have lost someone at Roo will forever be grateful I'm sure.
Any water bottle label design ideas yet? Anyone? I can for sure draw up something, but would like some ideas from a lot of people so I can get all of our thoughts put into it. I can draw it up, and have a graphic design friend who can put it into a better label like piece. Please pm me ideas!

Tommyboy, thank you for your thoughtful comment. We do need that kind of perspective, Coco points to you. Clairity and Cheeky, I have been in contact with Andrew's editor and have met nothing but resistance. I did not threaten legal action but did advise him to seek the counsel of an attorney or professor of journalism that can explain to him that unless the toxicology reports come back precisely as reported by the article, that he and Andrew are leaving themselves wide open to a libel suit from Matt's family and the festival organizers. Perhaps even Matt's campmates. MMJJ, I'm workin' on some stuff today. Hopefully some other people are as well, it'd be cool to include everyone who wants in. Doubtful that we'd need to outsource to your friend, as we've already got itrainmonkeys, myself (I'll give ya one guess to what the "vector" part of my handle is about, ) and I'm sure a few others. I'll start a thread when I've got some content to upload.
My problem with this article is not that Andrew wrote about the NO NO WORD!!! at Bonnaroo and how they may have played a part in Matt's death. It's the incredibly insensitive way that he did it. This wasn't an article about Bonnaroo or Matt. This was simply and over sensationalized anti-drug campaign. And the only role that Matt played was as the bad example. The entire article built to a final ending that basically surmounts to 'look what happens when you do NO NO WORD!!! kid. If you do NO NO WORD!!! you die!'
If you want to write and article about the dangers of NO NO WORD!!! fine. If you want to write one about the dangers or NO NO WORD!!! at Bonnaroo, also fine. But don't play it off like this is a story about how you lost a "friend" just to draw in readers. That's just cheap.
Wow, you summed it up perfectly and nailed it. I'd been trying to put my finger on it but couldn't quite put it into words. That's exactly what irked me about this article.
so because he didn't tip toe around the elephant in the room that no one else is even mentioning, doesn't make him a disgusting person.
As far as the water issue goes. Yes there should be more water stations. But really there is accessible water every twenty feet in Centeroo. Sometimes you have to pay for it sometimes not. My group went through the whole weekend without paying a dime for water and never waited more than a few minutes.
I don't think that water should be used as a scapegoat. There are a lot of other issues here that people aren't even talking about.
p.s. I don't know the author. I don't know Matthew. I didn't post the article to get him stoned. I posted it because what I got out of it was compassion. I got the story of him helping set up the tents of neighbors and being a nice guy.
Why do people think that NO NO WORD!!! shouldn't be talked about. They exist. Whether or not you do them or have friends that do them is irrelevant. But to shy away from talking about them all together isn't being truthful.
With all due respect Karen, I think the fact that you didn't know Matt is why you aren't upset by the article. Those of us who knew him and were close to him are upset with good cause.
Mentioning NO NO WORD!!! doesn't make Andrew a disgusting person but choosing to slant a story in true tabloid fashion to make Matt out to be something that he wasn't does.
I would love to know how you found water every 20 feet from the center of the What Stage considering that all of the concessions are at least 150 feet away. Your group was luckier than most. A lot of people were stuck in line for 20 minutes waiting for water, in the sun and heat. Also, not everyone can handle the taste of well water so they go with the filtered.
Do you honestly believe water is being used as a scapegoat? Matt's core body temp was 108. Surely you jest. The lack of water at Roo is a major problem and the number of heat exhaustion cases at the medical tents is a testament to that. Please don't act like it's not a major problem that needs to be fixed.
If you had known Matt then the last thing you would have gotten from that article was compassion. Andrew could have done a story about how wonderful Matt was and how he always helped people wherever he went but he didn't. That article was a slap in the face to those of us who are still grieving.
What isn't truthful is writing an article that makes it seem like the only reason Matt went to Roo was to get wasted which couldn't be further from the truth. He loved the music, the people and the spirit of Roo. He loved the sense of community. I have no problem with Andrew writing about NO NO WORD!!! but he should at least write an honest and balanced piece of actual journalism instead of just an opinion piece.
I have been trying to stay calm but truly this article and the fact that some people don't understand why it's in such poor taste galls me.
No, I didn't know him. But I have been in this situation before. I have seen articles written about people I know and while it's upsetting because the whole situation is upsetting it's not the authors fault for not listing off all of the wonderful things this person has done, which I'm sure there are many. This guy was sent to bonnaroo to collect an experience that lasted four days. All he had to go on was 4 days.
And yes I do think it's easier to get water and shade than people here are willing to admit. First you have the water trucks. They have clean cold water and it doesn't smell, at least not this year. I am a good judge of this because I live in Buffalo and we don't use well water so my nose is very sensitive to water that is different than ours. If you don't like it, fine. But if your body is screaming at you to drink than the smell/taste should be the last thing on your mind. Second, you have the filtered water stations. I don't like these. It takes to long to get to and once your there you have to get out with full water bottles and mud. I fell one time and that was the last time I will use them. I think of them more of a gimmick. But people use them. Great. If it even hydrates a few people I think they have done their job. Maybe in a few years all of the water trucks on the farm will be replaced with more permanent filtered water stations. Then we'll find something else to focus our negativity on. Third, you can always buy a water bottle. I know we all hate this. No one should have to pay for water. I think it sucks too. But again, if your body is telling you to drink NOW. 4 dollars really doesn't seam like that much than does it.
This is a music festival. Everything they do besides provide music and a patch of grass for our tents is an added bonus. I've been to festivals where there is no on site parking. We had to park our car and the haul our stuff a mile up a hill. Not fun, but that's what we bought into. Hardly any of us are going to this festival completely unaware of what to expect. The festival I mentioned had no website. We got a flier printed on glossy card stock. It had a number on it. The number had a voice mail that gave us directions. This festival has websites and blogs that practically hold your hand through the entire experience. The internet hand feeds you all the information you need.
So with that, I'm done. I'm done with the debating. As much as I like a good debate this is not the place to do it. I will again express my condolences to the family and friends of Matthew Sloan. I'm very sorry for your loss. I didn't know him but I'm sure it would have been a pleasure.
I'm sorry I mentioned the article. Although I'm sure it would have found it's way here eventually. I in no way wanted it to take away from the original purpose of this thread. When I received my Artvoice that my dad brings me every week, I read the article and didn't see anything that was a fabrication and I thought the things that were said about Mathew Sloan at the beginning and the end were sweet. I in no way meant for the author to be slammed for it and I in no way meant to show people that knew him any disrespect.
I wish you all well with the foundation, and will leave you to fond memories of your friend.

Wow, I mean just wow. I don't even know how to respond to that. I need to go for a walk and get some fresh air so I can simmer down. It stuns me that some people still don't get it. I'm out.
I sent a link to the article to my fiance to get his opinion on all this. He's a journalism professor, and I really wanted to get an objective opinion on just the article itself to see if it really is that bad, or if we are all just too close to situation. This is the response I got. And remember, this is his opinion, not mine. He is an expert on the subject, not me.
If you want my honest opinion about the article (as a journalism professor and someone who doesn't really share your passion for festivals), I can do that. I haven't read the inforoo link you sent me yet (I didn't want it to bias my response) but I'll check afterward to see how far off I was.
This is what I would write if Mr. Blake was one of my students (admittedly, I'd probably tone down my comments a bit):
Andrew,
While it is clear you put a lot of work and effort into your piece, I definitely some issues about your article, most of which can be summed up with three points:
1) This piece is about you, not Bonnaroo. You sound like someone who hates loud kids but spends his days as a Chuck E. Cheese birthday party supervisor. From the beginning your tone is adversarial, and so the reader feels like s(he) should be on the defensive. And, because it's about you, we (the readers) lose any kind of connection to the piece, and you eliminate any possibility of storytelling (which is what journalism is all about).
2) Your story is one-sided. Painfully one-sided. No one is expecting a completely unbiased report of what happened (let's save that for the Associated Press), but clearly thousands upon thousands of people love going to Bonnaroo. Honestly, when I started your piece, I was expecting a brilliant article about a journey you undertook at the festival where you met people and learned that, despite your misgivings, there was still something for everyone. Instead, you make the festival sound like a combination of an opium den and scenes from the Death Wish films. As a result, you lose your audience's trust. Just as the world does not work in absolutes, neither does writing. When you do, it comes off as sensationalistic and borderline cliche.
3) Serious concerns about the Matt portion. Obviously, when you mentioned the drug dealers and Matt as your only characters (outside of you and the musicians) in your piece, we all knew what was coming (like a bad, heavy-handed horror movie). And I have no problem with you including your thoughts on Matt's behavior--camping next to him meant you were a source, and your observations matter (as journalists, we cannot tip-toe around death out of respect--that's not our job). However, there are major problems when you don't include anything else about him. You didn't talk to anyone about him, as no other sources appear (by name) in your piece. This could have legal repercussions--libel of a private citizen can be a relatively easy lawsuit. Even citing other people saying the same thing would have built your case, but it's almost hearsay.
However, more importantly, you're not telling us anything about him AS A PERSON. He's more of a pawn than a character, almost there are convenience. We don't know anything about his background, and you seem to single out drugs as the culprit (while undoubtedly a number of other people were doing the same thing), rather than acknowledging the heat as an issue. It reads as more of a morality tale, there to confirm your suspicions of the festival.
Oh, and in terms of prose, your writing seems designed to call attention to itself. At someplace like Bonnaroo (or a thousand other events), the stories, appearance, and behavior of the people around you should basically write the piece itself. There's no need to add a million adjectives to punch up your experience. Honestly, it reeks of someone who treated the reporters notebook as a diary (or, in this case, a "Grinds My Gears" Journal) rather than as a tool for documenting the scene around you. Slogging through your verbiage, at times it feels like a freshman English student trying to finish a 2500 word count (and you've only got about 750 words of actual content).

Slap my ass and call me Sally, all this drama is making it harder to quit smoking! Or it's a lesson in Defending My Defenseless Friends from Douchebaggery Without Losing My Cool. I think I might get a B- on this one. Anyway, I love each and every one of you quackers. Fo' reals. Even Andrew.

I know the article situation is horrible to say the least, but this thread has turned into talking only about that...this is the RIP Matt thread, can we try to get back to the positive? I'm not saying ignore the crappy article, but I hate to see this entire thread all negative....screw this andrew dude - lets get back to GOOD MEMORIES/REMEMBERING MATT...please?!??

I second that! I didn't have anything nice to say about the article or the person that wrote it, so I was keeping my mouth shut.
I was listening to the NPR Dave Matthews audio today, and know in my heart that Matt still got to hear the show last Sunday, not in person but in spirit he was there

Typical Buffalo newspaper - might as well have been an article in the Buffalo News. We like to slant news to fit drama here (seems like a few of us are from Buffalo, maybe you know what I mean) - but this was really quite ridiculous ... but, typical Buffalo crap. No stats or facts, just what we want to make of it, we do.
I've just posted my notes from Matts memorial, go read it and lets forget this piece of trash "article"
I just read your notes. They were amazing. Thank you. Also, thank you so much for modding that post because I was seriously getting ready to punch something when I saw it. You're an angel.
Now, back on track with remembering Matt. Matt and I bonded over our abilities to nearly destroy our pants over shows. Me: The ACL website keeps crashing on me while I'm in the queue. I'm totally about to crap my pants. Him: (re Roo) I just saw the confirmed late night acts list and about peed my pants. We both had numerous other episodes of nearly pissing/crapping our pants but I think one example is more than enough.
We also bonded over our complete obsession with Phoenix. We were both stalking them around the country and would compare notes to see who had currently seen them more times and which shows they did were the best. By the time Roo rolled around he had seen them 4 times in the past year and I had only seen them 3 times. Way to win Matt, way to win.
I miss him terribly but know that his spirit will be with me at every future Phoenix show. I'll be dancing extra hard at their Lolla set for both of us.

I dunno why this just dawned on me, or whether it would have made a difference or not, but since CMA had a man pass away from heat exhaustion as well, we may want to encourage AC and Superfly to work with CMA organizers to not have both events on the same weekend. There are only so many experienced medical personnel available. Splitting that number between the two events can't be a good thing.

Very good point. I'll be firing off some emails to be sure. Ya know, I like you more and more every day Vector. You're quickly becoming my favorite viking. (Still love ya Pondo! )

It's cool, I think Pondo and I were separated at birth anyway.
Wow! I go away for a day and a half and this thread goes somewhere, somewhere I do not even know. Glad it was modded or else I would be Atomic Fire Ball HOT!!! Daisy can I have one of those Valiums you spoke of?
Inhale Hold it, Hold it, Hold it, Hold it, Cough Exhale
Okay that is better.
I do not really have anything to add to this, I just want to express myself a little about what I was reading. I do have some thoughts on what has been said, but I think my thoughts are better suited for another thread.

^^^ Yeah, be happy it was modded. That post sent me through the roof so feel blessed you didn't see it. And I definitely have a Valium for you (guess I'm an addict and a dealer now. LOL).
Deep breath. Calm blue ocean. Just remember that Matt's ashes are being carried by the ocean and on the wind now. He's with us whenever there's a breeze and every time we look at the ocean or when it rains. His love is all around us. :-)
I have lots of hugs for you scrog. Thanks for working so hard to honor Matt's memory. You are wonderful. And if you want to vent, feel free to PM me. :-) Hugs, love & peace!
The way that I want to honor Matt is make a much bigger effort to know more of you personally. We all talk to each other on the board, and I recognize that I speak with a lot of people repeated on different topics, but rarely make the effort to reach out through PM to really get to know people. Matt did that for me when I was still pretty new here and made me feel welcome. I vow to get to know as many Inforoosters as possible on a personal level to continue Matt's spirit.
Way to pull it back on track, Clarity - thank you.
As a half-assed moderator, I feel the need to chime in here when things get so harsh. Everyone has their frustrations and this situation is not one anyone wants to cope with. Those that knew Matt, those that sort of knew Matt, and those that didn't know Matt at all, can all take something huge from this. What that is will vary from person to person, but it's SOMETHING for EVERYBODY. In this massive loss, comes an offering, and it worries me to think that anyone will misconstrue what it is. Love one another, kids.
And, we won't hesitate to handle anybody digging their heels into a nasty angle. Be kind. Please.

This is what I'm trying to take from this tragedy as well. By nature, I'm just a very shy/guarded person but I'm going to change that. I'm definitely going to the inforoo brunch in 2011 and I'm gonna make an effort to interact with members here. I wouldn't be here if I didn't have tons in common with all of you.
I've always wondered what it was about this site that made me always want to come back. Specially in years I have not attended Bonnaroo. It must be the deep sense of community. Only true family would be so impacted by the passing of one of their own. Even though I'm not around as much, I will always be close to this group. Rest in peace Matt.
It's been almost a week since I found out about CarpeDM's passing. I met him at the 2008 Inforoo brunch & we exchanged a few PM's. I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Piercing blue eyes, infectious smile, and yummy cookies for all. You'll be missed, Matt.
P.S. I don't own a pair of Sanuks but I will if they name a pair in his honor. Still putting Sanuks on peoples feet....
