Would using 2' X 4' sections of wood be too much of a pain for a hexayurt? I am thinking I will need to cram everything in a van, so full sheets of plywood or insulation probably won't fit. I realize it would have to require extra tape and supports. Does the insulation sheets replace the plywood, or are both needed? How stable and durable is the insulation? I will be looking into this heavily, but am just sorting out some basic details and ideas.
How much water should each person have? (1.5 gallons of water per day recommended. I assume to have about 30 for 2 people.)
1.5 gallons/day/person is the recommendation. If you plan on cooking and bathing, then add a litlle but more for that.
Will the insulation panels not fit in the back of the van. You need 12 of them for a HexaYurt and you must get the 1" panels(3/4 found at lowes/HD will not work), that makes for a foot thick package, 4'x8', which you could strap to the top of the van. The panels are very light weight. I recommend the panels over plywood for a few important reasons. The first is dust. Dust will get everywhere. It will. Just embrace it. In the HY dust is limited to a minimum The tape that is recommended, is very strong tape and a wide tape and when used correctly will seal the HY and make it air tight. the only place dust gets into the HY is via the seal on the door. This is key! Tents or a wooden structure, one that is not sealed up will find its insides coveted in dust. Which is not the worst thing, but on Thursday when you are tired and want to rest your head on your bed, a dust cloud will not erupted in the HY, when you lay your head down on your pillow. I can not say that for the wooden structure. If you can fit it, even on top of the van , go Hexayurt, there is a reason you see a lot of them in BRC. Next reason the HY is great, at 11:00 in the morning you will still be wrapped in blankets! The insulation provided from the panels will give you another 3-4 hours sleep/day. This is key!! As you can tell, I am a big fan of the HY. It cost about around $400 is supplies and I have used that structure the past 4 years.
I've been looking into the standard 8' Hexayurt recently instead of building a geodome. Is there a best way to secure that sucker? I've been checking out the Rope Halo method over tape anchors. It looks like you just measure some rope enough to fit around the cone and then make six anchors with playa staples and tie it down with paracord or bungees. Can I feel pretty confident that the hexayurt won't fly off with this method? Time to learn some knot tying as well
^ I have used the "halo" method the past two years and it has treated me well and it's the faster to set up.
Geo domes are great on the playa, yet for the size, I say the standard 8' HY is the more comfortable structure with the quicker/easier set up.
Beveling the edges of the sides of the panels helps with construction, but is not required. Be sure to put the HY together at home, in your yard, at least once before you get to the playa. Make sure to wrap panels in a tarp during transport.
Also, it matters to me what my surroundings look like where I fall asleep and when wake up, so I painted the inside of my HY. My ceiling is blue, with white clouds, and a big yellow/orange/red ball in the center. Every morning I wake up to a great big sun, but it is still cool. The panels will have the makers logo and label on it. I painted over that. If not, it feels like a metal box. Very shinny. Paint it now, so the paint smell has time to evaporate. Time and energy spent now decorating your HY, will be much appreciated when you get to BRC.

One person mentioned to shrink wrap the hexayurt panels for transportation. Seems like the best option for transport since it may eliminate most flapping issues. I have abandoned my idea of fitting inside of a van and will just eat the gas expense. So far I have not had luck finding the panels, but I have not tried very hard, I did contact the local Rmax rep who said I could special order 48 panels if needed at HD or lowes, but that is not part of the plan.
Shrink wrap would work, but i would mot recommend it. One, it will cause a lot of waste and then trying to rewrap that on the playa, when you head home, could be a PITA. A tarp will do just fine, you can get a $10 cargo net to cover it to help with flapping. And you can use the trap as your floor. I drive from Florida and no issues here.
Also, HD and Lowes will not have the 1" panels unless you buy them in bulk (48) and that will probably be that way with other hardware stores. I went to a local commercial/residential insulation company. They were excited to hear about the project and more than willing to help.

Behold the Temple of Promise.
Edit: The picture below inspired the design above. I reread the article and noticed that. I was wondering how that shape would happen out of the top picture as it was.

Still leaning towards a hexayurt but sorting out the details. Strapping it to a vehicle without a roof rack was not recommended, but I have no idea if mine will have it. I have 2 rental vans booked, one normal minivan, and another a commercial van. I need to call at some point and see if they have vans with the roof racks. I did request it on the minivan, but no clue if the commercial would have one. If I had to put it on top of the van, I have a sheet of 1" foam to compress against the roof so it shouldn't mess it up too much.
One month of planning down, and a little less than five to go. I have been ordering a bunch of el wire and led bike lights and stuff from amazon and ebay. Haven't had any problems so far, it just takes up to a month to ship.
I also plan on getting some 3/8" x 14" lag bolts with a 2-link of chain and impact drive it in the playa for securing the structures of whatever gets made. I have learned a lot browsing eplaya, things that are normal for camping at bonnaroo won't fly out on the playa. Actually, they may fly and that's the problem.
I still haven't had the chance to sit down with my friend who is going with me, but that will happen in the next week or so. I will probably take up most of the expenses, but it was my idea to go in the first place. She hasn't been on vacation since we went to Bonnaroo in 2011.
The playa is another ball game! Things that last all week on the farm, will be ruined while waiting in line on the Playa. She can be a beast, but if you learn the rules(if that is the correct word) and follow them, you will have a quacking amazing time!!
The pilgrimage will happen one year, some year. I was chatting with a couple 'Muricans at the festival I went to this weekend, one of whom had been to the Playa many times, and I'm now more certain of this than ever (and naturally, I shared the tale of the beautiful Inforoo wedding you officiated last year, Scrog).
I have been slowly building up my savings and eyeing round-the-world travel deals, and I think the last leg may be a stopover in San Fran & Black Rock City. In 2017, my course will be over, I'm having a big birthday... it feels like time.

As of now I haven't signed up for any groups. I am still debating it. The one that seemed most likely was Orphan Endorphin since it has a homebrew bar that I could contribute to, but going groupless the first time may be the way it pans out. If space allows, I plan on bringing a bike trailer with a 10 gallon water cooler I can fit my 5 gallon kegs in and I will roll around with a beer cart at night a few times. That gets me to thinking that I need a cup holder on my bike.

It looks like I am all systems go for a hexayurt. I just called about my cargo rental van, and it sounds like I will have a dodge ram Promaster 1500 which has about 460 feet of cargo space for 2 weeks at $750 (now its about $1500 to book that). There shouldn't be any issues fitting a hexayurt inside. I was considering the Kodiak springbow tent, but I went to Death Valley this week for a day when it was 95 outside, and that was all I needed to be convinced that a hexayurt is the way to go. Since it is hard to source the 1" boards around here, I will probably just tape the 1/2" and 3/4" boards together since I can get those at the Home Depot by my house (people have used that method before).
I also got 1000 feet of mule tape to tie everything down, a 300 ft lb Ryobi impact wrench, and tons of El Wire and some costumes so far. There are bout 4 plastic totes full of stuff in the front room of my house and it just keeps on growing. Still need to order the 3/8" x 14" lag bolts so I can drill everything into the ground and get a bunch of 2 links of chain to use with the bolts instead of rebar, along with a Costco carport.
Everything is now falling into place nicely and I need to finish up my brewing in the next month to have around 6 (5 gallon) kegs for the Playa. I will try and have a cart to pull around the beer out in deep playa if I can get that sorted out.
Still much to do, but the cargo van is way bigger than I realized, so now I have more options for artwork and stuff.
Do not skimp on the 1" boards. People may have gotten by with the 3/4 or 1/2", but they got lucky. I have seen wind destroy a yurt made out of 3/4 board. The 1 inch boards are out there, you just have to find them and trust me, you want the 1"!! What town are you in?

I found some. Eplaya hits you pretty hard over the head if you skimp on necessities. I do recall seeing some people mentioning taping the 1/2 and 3/4 boards together and it working okay, but I will avoid that.
The place I am getting my boards thru has 1" hunter XCI boards for $21 a sheet, so I will try and get some in the near future. I just have to transport them from Dallas and have to sort that out. I ordered some lag screws, but they were stolen from my front porch before I got home and it doesn't look like UPS will cover the replacement costs (most likely my shady ass meth addicted cousin stole them, he has been living in an abandoned building a few blocks away for the past month with his trashy girlfriend [they also stole a bunch of other stuff from me]).
Aside from that, everything is rolling along smoothly and I now have a pile of boxes in my front room that keeps growing. I ended up getting a Costco carport for shade since they are playa tested, and have been hitting up the thrift store nearby on 50 cent tuesdays for costumes and stuff. I keep finding work clothes and coats, which I have no complaints about since I got 13 items for $7 the other day. I also came across a bunch of expired surgical grade n95 dust masks, so i can gift those out to whoever needs them on the playa.
Now I need to get a bike. The cheap one I have is too much of a pain to switch out the all the gearing cables and raise the bars, so I will see what I can find.
Need to brew a couple more beers to bring out on the playa also. If we meet up, you will probably want to try some. I got first place out of 42 pale ales with my current one this year.

Sounds good, especially the beer part. Remember to bring your cup. One you can clip on to yourself or your back pack.
I see RMAX is in Dallas. Not sure how far the place you are getting them from, I would bet a local company would have them, in Fort Worth(?) NO? Either way $21 is a good price. Get the 6" bi-filament tape from Good Guys. It is worth it! Make sure to tape the side of the panels. I beveled my panels. It makes it easier to construct, but not necessary. Cut the panels, so the writing is on the inside, this will make sense later. Construct ASAP! I also recommend paint the inside of the yurt, if not it is mighty shiny on the inside, you can also fix the shiny issue with hanging taps and sheets and such on the inside of the yurt. I painted a simple orange/red sun and clouds on the ceiling, inside. It is nice and refreshing to wake up to. DO NOT PAINT THE OUTSIDE.

I will see if I can get the panels in the next week or so. I think the Hunter XCI panels have silver sides with text on the outside and white on the inside. I need to see if I can get them in the next week or 2 and get my tape ordered. Not many places seem to stock them in town from what I can tell, I did find a place with the 1.5" boards, but I will try to maximize my space capacity.
I ended up getting a new cruiser this week also. Going to brew a few beers in the next couple weeks also.
So far I have been burning thru cash on supplies, but I don't have a rent, car payment, or a mortgage so I am not too concerned. I consider July crunch time on the hexayurt and brewing, so it is time to knock those out soon.

T-minus 5 weeks until the Playa. Lots of stuff left to do, but most major purchases are done. Need to finish taping the hexayurt panels and make a swamp cooler, otherwise everything is rolling along smoothly.
Here are a couple of cool burning Man videos to pass the time.

Preparations are nearing completion. Still finishing up the swamp cooler and hexayurt in the next couple days. It doesn't look like I will have time for a test run on the yurt setup and will be trial by fire at the Burn. The hexayurt has danger hinges though, so it shouldn't be too complicated for setup.
Preparation is 10 times what you need for Bonnaroo. It's pretty crazy. Will be picking up the cargo van Friday and then heading out for the 1700 mile drive on Saturday. Good thing gas is cheap right now, will need at least 200 gallons it sounds like. Will probably stop in Vegas on the way to sleep, but playing it by ear from where we end up. Projected arrival is Sunday night.

I am more concerned about the dust. I think the bugs are mostly gone now at this point and were a minor nuisance. Temps look to be in the 80's all week. Looks like a good year temperature wise, but I heard its windy and super dusty. It will be much nicer than it has been in Texas all month though. It looks to be in the upper 40's on some nights.
Still have a few things left to do tonight and tomorrow, but it likes like most of the bases will be covered. Finished the swamp cooler last night which can fit a homebrew keg to cool off, and i will be bringing 7 kegs as my main gift. I also have hundreds of dustmasks to give away at anytime anywhere after coming across some expired hospital masks that were going to waste.
On the STEP list for this year. If I get the ticket I will be rolling quasi solo (others I know are on the STEP list as well but who knows whom among us will get one).
This is a bucket list item for me...as soon as Prince passed I moved on getting things in motion. Next time aint guaranteed and I fucked up with his Purple Badness.
So I am reading up to prepare on the chance I get a ticket...solo I know I will have my work cut out but I am down.
Any tips welcome in any form from Vet Burners, thanks!

As someone with no burning man experience whatsoever, aren't there group camps that allow people to join so they're not solo? Where you contribute to the group and sorta all share resources? I could be confusing that with some other fest totally not Burning Man, but I feel like it's a Burning Man thing. Just something to look into.

Going Stag? Good luck with finding a ticket!! Be prepared for the dust! It will get everywhere. matter of fact, be ready to embrace the dust. The dust is your friend. Once you get a ticket, I can point you in the direction of others going and might be able to get you in with a group, if interested.

I am and you sir are most certainly correct on the getting the ticket. I am on the STEP list and have posted up and am watching the tickets board on eplaya. Until such time as I get one I am working on shelter and other "survive the thing" type items. Figure get ready and if I don't get a ticket for this year then be ready for next.
Appreciate the offer and I will holler if I get lucky!
