And since Stephen Graham does such a great job portraying him, I think the show is going to have some epic ass-kickery going on in the greater Chi-Town area.

I was actually thinking about how Stephen Graham has to be one of the biggest losers of competing with Breaking Bad. He really has done a fantastic job, but there's no way he was winning awards with Breaking Bad around.
That whole scene was intense. The way Chalkie was tearing up, the way it was framed when Buck came in through the door. I seriously thought HBO had done Omar in again. But yeah... come at the king and whatnot.
This season has really picked up in recent episodes. The recent turn with Eli and the FBI has really got my interest.

Boardwalk has basically perfected the slow-roll television season, imo. They lull you to sleep with setup upon setup upon setup and then start dropping the hammer on you.
The Eli stuff is my favorite part of this season, I always thought they lost a great opportunity with his partnering with Jimmy earlier in the show when he and Nucky just kind of kissed and made up. Very happy that dynamic is back in play.
I love Chalky and thought last episode was great because it showed he isn't as blind a fool as he was being portrayed, but I feel like Dr. Narcisse is a weak antagonist. They should have done more to build him up as a formidable crime boss. Either way, it's good to see Chalky back in the saddle, Eli vs. Nucky back in play and the FBI putting things together.
And (SPOILER WITHIN THE SPOILER) if you saw the scenes from next week, Chi-town is going to get interesting.
I think Dr. Narcisse is really about where he is supposed to be. As the season goes on, it appears like they did kind of a feint with him where it looked like he was going to be Nucky's big bad, but instead, he is Chalky's. Chalky is less powerful than Nucky, so he would by default warrant a weaker adversary. The FBI is looking like they are going to be the bigger threat for Nucky this season.
Also, I am surprised neither of you commented on the obvious similarities between William and Jimmy. Both were supposed to get a degree. Neither succeeded, and they end up as Nucky's protege. They even end up with the same book.
Thank Christ they finally like Michael Shannon out of his box a little. I had almost forgot how genuinely frightening he can be. I do wonder how it will matter that he wasn't the one who actually shot O'Banion. Do we know the guy who shook his hand? I feel like I recognize him, but people run together after a while. Edit: Yeah, it was Frankie Yale which matches the person if not exactly the method or reason.
I continue to like the subtle build-up of things. Patricia Arquette with the shotgun at the end. Ron Livingston with his secret message to whoever was on the other end of the phone.
Speaking of which, Jillian may be a little crazy and brought some of her misfortune on herself, but she really has had a sh*tty lot in life, so I can't help but feel bad for her some.
Dino's death signaled the start of the five year gang war in Chicago that came to define many of the people involved and created the most vivid image of what people think of when they hear Prohibition. Everything in Chicago is going to be violent for a long time.
I am very excited to see just how Nucky will handle getting drawn into the fight with Dr Narcisse. I also agree with Dave Maynar in that I have a bad feeling that the universe is once again going to be taking a big dump on Gillian this season. I hope I am wrong but I am not counting on it.
Michael Shannon owned that episode. Nice to see the Van Alden side of his personality resurface. Also interested to see what will happen with Mickey Doyle. While it's clear that Nucky isn't fond of him, it seemed kind of strange to give Rothstein the go-ahead on it without a second's thought. I wonder if Eli or even Sally will play into that subplot.

Mickey gave Eli's son that case of booze which set that whole mess in trouble. When Nucky found out, he didn't seem too pleased. Mickey was trying to give Sally a little something too which Nucky certainly did not like. When it comes down to it, Mickey's a snake, and Nucky is smart enough to know it. Part of me thinks that he gets Mickey out of the way and uses that as an excuse to try to get Sally to move up to New Jersey under the guise of her taking Mickey's place in overseeing the operation there.

I like Mickey. He adds a good comic relief element for me. But, he's as good as gone, I imagine. Everyone is always so damn serious and he's just a goof, with a little a bit of style too.
I might stop watching the show if that happens because Shea Whigham is so great, but I think that's going to be the giant gut-punch this season (and there seems to be one every season).

I second that Eli seems likely to not make the end of the season. Either that or Chalky. Both are running similar story lines with their alienation from their family, but Eli seems more likely with his previous betrayal of Nucky and Chalky being more integral to the power structure.

I kind of knew something was up with Gillian's confession. It all seemed to come together for her too perfectly for it to be true. Personally, my thought was that Ron Livingston was going to be some kind of relation to the guy she killed. The Pinkertons probably makes a lot more sense though.
I think there is a lot to be made of that last line. There's no doubt that it was meant to be nebulous like that to cause debate until next week. Part of me thinks he wants out altogether, but I just don't see how he could really walk away, so it's probably just out of the Florida deal.
I totally think he knows about Eli. As innocuous as the poem scene seemed, Eli's total lack of reaction probably sealed the deal for Nucky's suspicions. This is probably what makes me think he wants to walk away from it all. He already "lost" Eli once, so a second betrayal might make him feel like losing his family is inevitable if he continues down the same path.
I don't think it's going to end with Nucky's arrest. I do think that the FBI will cause issues with him being able to extricate himself from whatever he wants out of though.
I kinda think Nuk is planning an exit from the bootlegging business. After his conversation with Eli on the porch, it seems like he is ready to hand things over. At the same time I think this could all just be a ploy to test Eli. I think he knows about agent Tolliver and suspects Eli is involved somehow.
I hate the doctor. I wish he would have gotten axed. I just can't stand him as a character. And not in a "he's a good actor if you hate him" kind of way. But Gyp Rosetti was an amazing villain and a hard act to follow. Pretty much everyone is screwed in one way or another going in to next season, except for Margaret. There is so much hanging over every characters head and there was no silver lining. Next season has an incredible array of possibilities, but man, that was depressing. I wonder if Richard is dead. It sure looked like it, but I'm not 100%. I would think that this sets up the big mid-season death with the doc though. Doubt he makes it through next season.

I did enjoy Gyp as an antagonist by the end, but I wouldn't call him amazing. He was a fairly one-sided, bullheaded aggressive caveman-like idiot who chose his actions with no regard beyond the emotional short term. In that way I guess he was the polar opposite of Nucky. I really enjoyed this season, it was a slow burn but once it got cooking it was addictive. Was glad to see Chalky more prominent in the main story. Richard dying (I think he's definitely dead, what with the whole "heaven like" returning to his sister's home with his face back scene) was absolutely heart breaking. My wife was pretty devastated, I'm glad we had an episode of Homeland afterwards to cleanse the sadness palette. Of all the characters I wanted a happy ending for I wanted it for Richard the most, and I know this is Scorcese and its Boardwalk and shiz doesn't always work out, but still, screw them for killing Richard like that. Having said that, I don't think he could have lived with himself after shooting Chalky's daughter anyway. And he did save Tommy from crazy lady. I thought for sure Ely would die this season, I'm glad he didn't because he's became one of my favorite characters, really an outstanding acting performance from Shea Whigham.
Anyway this season was awesome. I still think season one will always be my favorite.
***patiently waits for new season of Justified and whatever that awesome new HBO show with Woody Harrelson is called***

I agree with much of this, especially the Gyp commentary.
The Doctor was a good character, to me, because I was constantly getting pissed that I didn't know more about him. I take that as a surefire sign the character is worthwhile, otherwise I'd just say "whatever, shoot him and move on."
Richard is dead, don't even try to talk yourself into him just being 'really, really hurt,' or anything along those lines. And it was a perfect ending for his tragic story arc. The guy has one last assignment, one last thing he has to do in order to get the happy life he's been chasing since he met Tommy. Having him recover and find that life would cheapen his character, imo. It was also a great twist to have him fail his final assignment, since we were so used to Richard-the-badass that seeing him screw up and show he's human was a good turn for the show to take. I agree I wanted a happy ending for Richard, but I never, ever expected one.
Oh, and ELI WITH VAN ALDEN ARE YOU F*CKING SERIOUS?!

Best season for me without a doubt. I hated Eli for betraying his brother but then this final episode really showed the humanity behind Eli (and his critique of Nucky was right-on). The show always has me rethinking.
I don't know about Narcisse yet. He sometimes feels very overplayed to me.

I feel like the show is going to head towards more of a "windy city empire", and for that I have no complaints. All the best characters are based out of Chicago now
the only thing that kinda bugged me was I thought Will's entrance when Nukky had Eli on his knees was little too convenient for the sake of progressing the plot. But other than that everything unfolded well.
Also, are we supposed to believe that it was Capone who put the hit on Torrio?
