I was starting to worry about you, first post in the thread since....you know.
Hey, at least we get an Eli/Van Alden/Capone bonerfest in Chi-town now.
It's been a busy week, so I didn't get a chance to watch it until last night. The ending was actually spoiled a little for me which was originally infuriating, but now, I think it may be for the best. I probably would have had to call in sick today if I didn't have that preparation.
I loved that fight between Eli and Tolliver. I seriously had no clue how it would end. I have finally gotten to the acceptance stage of grieving for Richard. =(

Oh man. Wow. What a finale. What a season. I hated that some things happened but I thought those things made 100% logical sense. All the Chalky/Richard/Narcisse stuff was heartbreaking but totally felt organic and built up. Wow. Feeling sad but also really excited for the next season.
The time jump in the new season is pretty jarring. It seems like they are just trying to wrap this show up in a hurry.
It's too bad. The new season starts in 1931 at the start of the Depression. So that means Rothstein is already dead (he was one of my favorite characters; it's such a crime that he wasn't even given a send off), and Al Capone already pulled the St. Valentines Day massacre.. Hoping we get some flashbacks of those two events... But with only 8 episodes; I kind of doubt it.
Don't know I feel about this show ending on Sunday. Been watching this show since 2nd season aired back in 2011 (?) It's been a pleasant slow-burn for me, only binge watching season 1 and half of season 2.
Really having mixed feelings on the final season. I mean, I think it's good? Definitely not how I anticipated it to end. Loved how Van Alden went out, but hated how they wrapped up Chalky's character. Last Sunday was pretty climactic, and I don't really know what they'll do with the finale. Maybe more emphasis on Nucky's past. How Gillian ended up with the Commodore. Maybe we'll see a bit of child Jimmy? Has anyone else been watching the final episodes?

I really like the way they handled Chalkys character. Even though it felt like the way last season was going, that this would have ended more bloody than it did. Also loving the way they are telling Nucky's story through flashback.
Although there is a lot i do enjoy about this season, there is quite a bit im not happy with. That includes not getting to see Capone really get to be Capone. I realize this story wasn't about him but still wouldve enjoyed seeing him go insane. Also not liking how the most recent episode played out but we shall see how it all unfolds this Sunday.
All in all a really underrated show and excited to see what Winter comes up with next.
, but just storywise. It feels like alot of characters were cut off from the main story arch, and others were just spinning their wheels.
Michael Shannon and Michael K Williams in particular are two great actors that I feel just weren't given much, and therefore wasted being on this show. Val Alden might as well have just been killed off at the end of season 1, because his story after that just went absolutely no where. Chalky on the otherhand just never clicked as a character at all.

The whole reason the show is getting cancelled is because Winter has been sitting on a script he wrote for the last two years for a show set at a record company in NY in the 70s. Apparently the guy who played Gyp Rosetti is going to be playing Mick Jagger, which sounds kind of interesting. I'll give it a shot.
Gillian killing Nucky seems unlikely to me. If anything I think he'll get her out of the mental house to compensate for abandoning her as a child. Even that seems a little far-fetched to me. It might be nothing.
I feel it's possible that the kid Nucky told off last episode is going to come back, in a way to prove himself to Nucky and avenge Micky's death, try to kill Luciano or Lansky, fail, and force a hit on Nucky. But even the Luciano angle of the story seems wrapped up. The real Enoch Johnson didn't pass until the 60s I believe, so it's possible that Nucky makes it out alive. It would be nice for the end of the finale to fastforward two years to see Prohibition end, Nucky back with Margaret in New York, and Willy successfully prosecuting several mob figures. But the season's tagline is "No One Goes Quietly" so I feel something big has to happen.
One thing that hasn't been addressed yet is that Narcisse is working for the feds. I expect that to be pretty big in the finale. No idea what's gonna happen.
Well that was a perfect ending. Didn't see that coming at all, but it all worked out like it should have. Don't really feel back for Nuck because his path was set the moment he accepted that badge. And in the end, he did take care of Gillian, just like he promised. Plus he got to go out on his own terms, since those guys were cops and he would have probably just rotted away in jail. That scene with Capone and his kid was gut-wrenching. Great acting all around and the writing was great this last season. I'm just fine with the way it ended. Totally appropriate and believable.
I liked the surprise that Tommy showed up. But at the same time I didn't like how it made Richards death meaningless. He spent two seasons trying to save Tommy. With things turning out the way they did he might as well have left Tommy with Gillian. Makes Richards death that much more tragic I suppose. But I don't hafta like it.

i wouldn't really say he took care of Gillian. He didn't do anything for her in the end. He got to see the wreckage he caused by his selfishness and greed. Him supporting her over the years was purely out of guilt, and none of it helped her in the end. Then she wrote him, begging him to get her out of the mental hospital before the procedure, but he was too late.
And being shot by someone isn't exactly "going out on your own terms". But I get what you're saying.
Was unsure how i felt about the way the episode was heading but once i saw it come back full circle, made it worth the wait. Good season ending episode, not the biggest fan of the season as a whole (mainly because i felt they couldve gone a season or two more , IMO.)

That scene with Capone and his kid really, really got me. Especially when his kid put his dukes up, calling back their boxing lessons from an earlier season. Stephen Graham deserves a nomination for his work, he's really brought Capone alive in unexpected ways.
The ending was awesome but I called the Tommy Darmody twist earlier in the episode, when Nucky went to get him out of trouble. He was acting reeeeal Jimmy Darmody in that scene the way he was mumbling. I thought the Nucky flashbacks paid off in a huge way in the finale, the stuff with young Gillian really added scope and depth to Nucky's entire arc and brought Nucky's effect on the Darmodys full circle when delivered in conjunction with the death scene.
